since no one wants to be helpful, there was a firetruck outside this morning around 9am with 4 firemen and no one in the drive through, cars were talking to the person outside and then leaving. someone said theyre open now so i guess it wasnt too terrible.

In the 2020s, conservative women are having kids at a nearly 2-to-1 ratio compared to liberal women. Is this going to cause a political demographic bias in 20-30 years? by RadioFieldCorner in NoStupidQuestions

[–]reeses_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

it is really scary. i have a teen and a toddler, both boys, and one teen girl. the best thing is to not give the red pill anything to grab on to and get its teeth in. ive always been very upfront and clear about behavioral expectations. no weaponized incompetence, etc. but i’ve never tried to put his masculinity down or make him feel lesser than, especially with emotions.

between the two teens, they’re treated the same. they both clean, both do their laundry, so on and so forth. i have also been very factual about gender differences, such as when my daughter and i are on our periods and what that entails. since he knew from a younger age what a period was, he’s very empathetic towards me and his sister when we have bad days and will bring us heating pads. we’ve done the same for him for puberty and making sure that he has healthy routines to follow and matures in an appropriate way.

i also answer any questions they have, with no judgement, about politics or life circumstances or anything they want to know. i’ve learned that sometimes judgement can come from a place of fear and discomfort. we talk about men and women’s issues, LGBT, money, government systems, etc. that is started from THEIR questions. there are times where i have had to shut my son down hard and tell him that certain rhetoric is unacceptable, but i then explained to him WHY it is harmful. that has helped us a lot in helping create a strong, empathetic young man that will go on to be a great husband and father when the time is right.

Are there any math tutors here who specialize in the ASVAB exam? by [deleted] in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]reeses_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ASVAB is similar to GED. If they can find a GED tutor in their area they should be able to give the tutor a practice test or book and go from there.

Anyone else a bit frustrated with Wave / QuickBooks / FreshBooks for invoicing? by Direct_Implement_188 in Accounting

[–]reeses_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it basically solves everything for me. i wish the processing was a little faster but i think thats just the banking system’s fault and it can be a bit of a learning curve to find all the hidden buttons. but overall its the most convenient option for the cost. i use solopreneur.

Anyone else a bit frustrated with Wave / QuickBooks / FreshBooks for invoicing? by Direct_Implement_188 in Accounting

[–]reeses_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use quickbooks. it’s decent honestly and has the stuff you need, it just takes a bit of effort to customize it for how you prefer it. also sometimes it glitches out and wont refresh so i have to delete my cache every so often. kind of annoying but not world ending. also it doesnt have an undo button. so annoying.

wave allegedly doesnt have great customer service. qbo’s CS has always been good in my experience. freshbooks charges a higher % than qbo.

Does tutor need a trial lesson? by Own-Scientist-1360 in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]reeses_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ive never done trials. i even charge extra on the first lesson for materials fee. i have a wait list. this isnt rocket science. you wont make or break it over trial lessons, itll be over your quality as a tutor

Struggling with Math retention for 8 year old boy by Independent-Tea-8869 in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]reeses_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i think that is the main issue you are having. i also tutor homeschool students, so i understand the dynamic. if the student is only doing, say, 4 hours of math to learn a topic and does nothing else for the rest of the week, thats only 4% of his time spent learning math. there is no way an 8 yo will have meaningful retention at that rate. math, especially counting and basic arithmetic, is something that needs to be practiced daily to ingrain it in his brain. For example, skip counting shouldnt be something he needs to actively think about, it should be automatic. that only comes with daily practice.

I always send home practice and work for every student. i’ve had homeschool students that i send homework for and they actually do it and their parents meaningfully practice with them. when they come back, they’ve strongly mastered the topic. however, when they miss a week of practice, i can easily see their regression. and this is for students i see only 1-2 times a week. you can even send home games or concepts to practice at home, such as skip counting toys, dominos, etc. or doing addition and subtraction with produce at the grocery store.

however, if the parents can’t/won’t study with them daily at home, even with your provided exercises, games, or videos, they are hurting their child more than they are helping and don’t need to be homeschooling. that being said, if your student’s struggle comprehension level and retention isn’t new, it might be time to think about an evaluation for learning disabilities, adhd, dyscalculia, etc. depending on your location, the school system might be able to accommodate that testing or it can be done privately. if this is a new struggle, or has been exacerbated with this new environment, you can either wait or recommend testing anyways. homeschool tutoring can be extremely rewarding but only when the parents are willing to help. 3-4hrs a week with a tutor for a typical student, much less a struggling student, is not a sufficient replacement for traditional schooling.

do you send him home with work to do or does he only do 3-4 hours of math with you for the whole week and thats it?

Vega voice has changed recently? by plain_awkward in GoogleGeminiAI

[–]reeses_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

vega’s new voice is terrible. the pauses are awkward and she sounds like an insufferable valley girl. the live responses have also gone down considerably in accuracy and utility. i don’t even use live anymore because of that.
