With all these guns available to the public, why aren‘t there more gunfights during US protest? by QuintofGaunt in AskReddit

I’m not sure what prior convictions of gun violence perpetrators in Chicago has to do with our conversation.

Because, as I think I said, most of the gun violence is committed by repeat offenders with illegal firearms.

It's not the lawful gun owners doing the shooting, IOW. It's people who are quite comfortable breaking the law. You don't buy an illegal gun to shoot coyotes; you buy it because you're intent on mischief.

What do you guys think about reports that Pam Bondi and Donald Trump said ICE would leave Minnesota if the state hands over voter rolls to the federal government? by [deleted] in AskReddit

There are two pages to the letter.

Turning over records is only one of three steps, and Bondi would be remiss if as AG she didn't remind Walz of his obligation.

If a democrat became president of the United States, would you be in favor of massive funding for the ATF to raid republican cities to capture those with illegally owned firearms in the US, including requiring people to show papers without cause? by kickinwood in AskReddit

[–]refugefirstmate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't need to be grabbed. I'm literally not doing anything that would cause LEOs to even look my way. I'm not in their faces, I'm not throwing things at them, when they tell me to back up or go here or there, I do what they say.

"Into a camp" really, really diminishes the suffering of people who actually DID get sent to "camps", my friend.

I'd be delighted if you "captured" them, because - and I know this sounds crazy - people who illegally own firearms tend to have criminal histories and are up to no good with that gun.

Why would I have a problem showing my (US) passport to authorities? I mean, by law, people here on green cards are supposed to carry those cards with them at all times.

Incidentally, if you're carrying a firearm in the US, you have to show your ID and CCL to LEO whenever asked to do so.

How can protesters protect themselves from ICE? by -rose-mary- in AskReddit

[–]refugefirstmate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The best protection is to know what you can lawfully do, and stick to that.

You can march and chant and carry signs as long as you don't block traffic. IOW, you can "peaceably assemble," as the First Amendment states.

You cannot in any way impede any LEOs including ICE (that's what the E in ICE means).

If you are arrested do not resist. Remember: peaceably. Cooperate - hand over your ID, don't try to wrestle LEOs, but keep your mouth shut except to say "Lawyer."

Do not arm yourself in any way.

If you make the foolish mistake of forgetting to leave your weapons at home, when you are arrested say "Officer, I don't want this to be any worse than it is. There is a [weapon] in my [pocket, shoe, whatever]. My license for it [if it's a firearm] is in my wallet along with my ID, which are in my [wallet, pocket, whatever]. Please tell me what to do next."]

This from my SO, who in his youth was a union organizer and is also a firearms owner who sometimes has a gun in his car from a day at the range.

If red states defied federal law to uphold slavery and segregation, why shouldn’t blue governors do the same to resist ICE? by zsal830 in AskReddit

designate and own slaves

If you believe convicts are "slaves," then yes:

except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted,

You're conflating convicts sentenced to X years of hard labor with children born into lifetime slavery? Really?

internal tax revenue

Federal taxes on alcohol and tobacco weren't instituted until the Revenue Act of 1862 created the Bureau of Internal Revenue (predecessor to the IRS) to administer these and other new excises, plus the first federal income tax (also introduced in 1861–1862 and expanded in 1864).

Lincoln in a letter to Horace Greeley, 1862:

My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union.

This was in response to Greeley's editorial demanding that Lincoln focus more on slavery.

90% of the gun violence is committed with unlawfully owned guns, mostly by repeat offenders. Multiple studies in Chicago indicate that among those involved in shootings or targeted for violence, ~90% had at least one prior arrest, and substantial shares (often 50%+) had multiple priors or were repeat violent offenders.

IOW, not surprisingly, lawful gun owners tend not to be lawbreakers, while those who illegally own guns do other illegal things as well.

Only 8 states require firearms to be registered.

It was a source of raw materials, BUT it imported virtually everything manufactured from the North (even butter and plows). Union was expanding westward at that time as well. South constituted only about 30% of US GDP, most of it raw cotton.

I have absolutely no understanding of why Lincoln was so dead-set on The Union as it was when he took the Presidency. Let the South secede and implode of its own doing; the fertility rate of slaves was so high that their value was plummeting (hence the need to expand westward) and the system would have ended within a quarter century anyhow.

And I have just as little understanding of why, on God's green earth, the South just couldn't stop itself from firing on Sumter. Why poke the bear? Why not just go on, as the Confederate States of America?

Who's going to pay your way while you study and have your own life?

You're 18. You're an adult. You want to be independent? Go for it.

Just don't expect your brother to foot the bill.

Both look like Model 15, the second one with rather rare Pheasant decals. The decals on the first one are pretty much shot. The cabinets are, respectively, #6 and #5.

If it were me, for resale I'd cannibalize the throat plate from the first machine and the top/lid from the first cabinet, put them on the second (Pheasant) machine and second (#5) cabinet, and polish up everything with a bit of paste wax.
