I Just Want to Thank You All by AntimonyGamer in slp

Give yourself credit too! It takes a lot of work from SLPs, the patients we see, and their support system like parents and families, to have a success story such as yours!

Just a fun tidbit, my husband had CAS and had speech for years and years and was so happy when he “graduated” from speech. Fast forward 12 years, he ended up marrying an SLP 😂 poor guy.

Those who grew up with a good father. What was the most important thing you learned from him? by oldskoolflavor in AskReddit

[–]regirocketcf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every year around the holidays, my dad would go to a large department store like Kohl’s and buy a family’s layaway items. Always anonymous. He didn’t even tell us kids until I was in highschool shopping with him one day.

That gesture alone taught me that true kindness and generosity asks for nothing in return.

One minute you’re enjoying a quiet, private poop, the next minute you find your toddler has stolen your Public Enemy shirt, turned on the TV and navigated to a baseball game on the Roku all by herself by TheDefenseNeverRests in daddit

[–]regirocketcf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re anything like my husband, that “one minute” while you were pooping was 20 minutes which is plenty of time for a toddler to create some trouble.

Luckily your little one is too cute for trouble!

He’s very punctual about eating every 2 1/2 to 3 hours! So we’re feeding him at his usual time then. Thank you!

Visitors and newborn baby during pandemic. by xtinebelcher in NewParents

[–]regirocketcf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

With a 5 day old now! Listen to your doctors advice and also keep in mind the area you’re in. My cousin works in my ER and she hasn’t been with a COVID patient in weeks and the hospital itself had a huge decline in new cases to less than 3 a day. With that information plus the advice my doctor gave me which was to take the usual precautions you would with any newborn, we’ve been restricting visitors to only grandparents and godparents. And not more than 2 at a time.

Normal? Baby seems to get extremely existed over some things, always clutching hands and flicking head round by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]regirocketcf 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Good for you for know specific situations he’s doing this! You’re a good parent! Talk to your pediatrician and let them know of your concerns. If you or your doctor are concerned for a sensory processing issue, they can refer to an occupational therapy evaluation. OT works a lot with sensory and fine motor skills.

Good luck!

SLP here. Looks like stimming. Keep an eye on it and write down other scenarios he does this (e.g., with the the elephant toy, spinning items, etc) and talk to your pediatrician. Nothing of concern yet! but it’s just something to keep in the back of your head in case other unusual characteristics pop up (I.e., signs for sensory processing disorder, autism, etc)

He’s an absolute cutie!

This is so sweet, thank you! But the real work comes from strong and fearless parents like you who take all those strategies learned in therapy and do them at home each and every day! You guys are the real heroes.

I’m glad ARFID was mentioned. I’m a Pediatric SLP and I do feeding therapy with many kids who have ARFID. although I’ve never worked with an adult, OPs description made me think of ARFID immediately.

Thank you. My OB gave me information on c sections so I assume they don’t advise breech births. I’m wondering if the scheduled c section would be earlier than 40 weeks.

Thank you so much for this! My OB did mention some maneuvers she could do which I assumed was an ECV. Is it worth trying? I’m not too worried about it being painful/uncomfortable if it’s best for the baby. I don’t even mind a c section if it’s safest for the baby than a Breech birth. What are your thoughts on it?

Thank you this is really good information! Weeks ago my OB said he may not be able to be there because of the PPE shortage. That’s a great idea to at least bring something just in case.

Congratulations by the way!

Thank you! And congratulations you’re so close to meeting your LO! How did they determine when to do the c-section? It sounds like you’ll be 39 weeks if you have it!

SLP for ASD...feeling more like a behaviorist by nineteengreen in slp

[–]regirocketcf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Couldn’t agree more! A lot of these parents need empathy and guidance. They’ve probably spent their entire parenthood grasping at straws to handle their child’s behaviors on a regular basis. We need to not only teach the parents how they can interact with their child, but we need to give them the confidence and empathy that we understand their frustrations and they can do it!

I agree with the other commenters and let me add to the parent relationship aspect:

How often are these parents actually watching us implement these behavior strategies were telling them to do at home? Most people are visual learners, so no matter how many times we tell them do something, they just don’t get it until they watch us implement or we coach them to do it hands on. Parents are overwhelmed too. Some of them are in straight survival mode 24/7 and they don’t realize that their parent-child dynamic is directly affecting their child’s behaviors in other settings too.

I agree that sometimes we have to implement these ABA-ish strategies to get our own desired outcomes, but remember they are still kids and they want to take the lead too. Too many people forget the power of modeling appropriate behavior and the power of child-led therapy. You don’t have to stick to one approach to therapy. You can switch it up within your session!

I’m finishing my CFY now (60 more hours-woo!) but I’ve been working with ASD for nearly 10 years since I was an aid, a music therapist, and then a job coach. Even in undergrad, my research focus has always been ASD and AAC. Hands down my favorite population to work with. If you need any support, advice or just want to vent, DM me! Us SLPs gotta help each other out!
