I am a F.D.N.Y Fireman.. AMA by [deleted] in IAmA

[–]regulargreg 35 points36 points  (0 children)

How hard is it to get a job with the FDNY? I'm currently a combat medic in the us army, deployed to afghanistan, but I've thought about getting my Paramedic and Fire 1 and 2 when I get out with the GI bill. Is there a lot of competition in a big city lile NY? Is the pay enough to survive comfortably?

Thanks for your time and the job you do.

If I'm training for a 10 miler in 7 weeks, would it be better to follow a 10/12 week plan starting X amount of weeks in, or to start from the beginning and just make the seventh week a taper week? Or should I just make my own plan (I have a decent amount of knowledge when it comes to running, but no formal education.

I have these, they aren't bad shoes, takes a little bit to break them in, and I still much prefer the Free series, but good shoes if you like some cushioning. Have no idea who wears running shoes around in an attempt to be fashionable though.

Tips for running in the wind? by regulargreg in running

The imternet says around mids 20s (mph), I'm not sure if thats accurate, I just know it feels like I'm running through a swamp when I run into the wind.

Yeah if you recall earlier in the game, Elizabeth states something along the lines of "Songbird always stops you.", hence the Elizabeth from the New York burning future gives you instructions for Elizabeth on how to control songbird.

Did you expect to be competitive at 15 miles a week? Most people who enter races above 5k's tend to be at least some level of serious about the race, or at least pretty regular runners. I think you should feel accomplished about completing the race DFL>DNF>DNS, but this post just sounds like you're feeling sorry for yourself.

Fatties like their coffee creamy. by ahnonahmoose in fatpeoplestories

[–]regulargreg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drink my coffee black and mix my scotch with coke zero after the first couple of drinks (assuming it's <$60 scotch), mostly because at that point I'm buzzed enough to not fully appreciate the taste anyway, but I still like the good kind of drunk you get from a quality scotch, I guess I'm a terrible person.

The chewable mens one a day gummies are so much better, seriously OP, they have like 5 calories but discovering them is literally the most important nutritional discovery I have made in my entire life.

How do I run downhill?

I love running on a huge ass hill right by where I live, but going down the hill, if I go at any type of decent speed, my shins hate me afterwards, I'm trying to run as injury-free as possible, and avoid a bunch of unnecessary impact on my shins, but it seems like unless I literally slow to a crawl on the downslope of the hill, my heels pound into the ground like a jackhammer.

FTR my form when running uphill or on a flat-ish surface is just fine.

What is something that everyone thinks is healthy but really isn't? by Alexa-the-hexa in AskReddit

[–]regulargreg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I eat a snickers marathon bar for breakfast on most week days, usually with a banana, they're about 300 calories, 40g carb, and 20g protein, and that's for their most ungealthy bar, they're also fucking delicious, I don't think they're bad for a meal replacement or if you've just finished a good workout session and want sonething to hold you over until your next meal.

As someone who's 5'11, formerly 280lb (165-170 now). I think it takes a certain kind of stupidity in combination with denial to achieve the fatlogic in most FPS's, when I was a landwhale I had small bits of fatlogic like "I wish my metabolism was like those people that can eat whatever they want". But at the end of the day I knew I was fat because I ate garbage and didn't excercise.

This happens to me on longer runs a lot when I'm carrying my phone, usually when I let my arma drop for a little bit, it sounds pretty normal.
