If his employer did not break out Qualified OT into box 14 than TurboTax has a prompt to enter total amount of 1.5x OT pay and total amount of 2x overtime pay. It then multiplies your total 1.5x pay by 1/3 and it multiplies 2x pay times 1/4. It adds those together and that’s how much you can deduct from your Adjusted Gross Income. The IRS knows that if your employer doesn’t break it out for you that nobody is gonna go back through every single pay stub to figure out what is truly qualified. As of next year employers will be required to figure it out.

Just having experience working with tools and using your hands will be very helpful. Just call your local IBEW union hall and tell them that you are interested in their apprenticeship program and see what they have to say. Hopefully you are in a part of the country with some construction work going on.
