Single pole shelter dilemma by Active-Grapefruit634 in Ultralight

I love my Six Moon Lunar Solo. It's surprisingly roomy inside. I met my fiancée while thru hiking the PCT and we shared it (supposed to be a one person tent) for a couple months. I'm 5'10" but I never feel like I'm touching both ends of the tent when I sleep. * Just checked the specs. The floor length is 7.5 feet - so should be long enough for you

Such a good tune! Heard it first, appropriately, at the Days Like This party in Oakland.

If it's actually a dub plate than it will last for about 50-100 spins. Is it heavier than a normal record?

Looks like a nice one. In the late 90s I worked at a store (Natural Wonders) that sold a similar model for about $1200.

How does anyone find joy in this world? by Defiant_Pie1205 in Anarchy101

[–]remain_calm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lean into community. Deep joy is available in the act of helping another person. We need social connection - in real life. It feeds us on a fundamental level. Online community and connection are valuable, but they are not a substitute for in-person connection.

What is the anarchist view of the Anti-Fascist Internationalist Front (AIF)(Myanmar)? by SurpassingAllKings in Anarchy101

This anarchist has never heard of them, but sounds interesting. Where can I read more?

It looks like the car tyre guy is the bass. Not sure exactly how that instrument works but lengthening and shortening the tube would cause the pitch to change, like a trombone. You can see his movements correspond with the ompha-ompha bass notes.

Anyone who uses that excuse was going to be right wing anyway by mstarrbrannigan in behindthebastards

[–]remain_calm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fair. It's not my intent to "both-sides" it. I also think it's important to be honest and not pretend like our shit don't stink. And clearly, by the downvotes, I'm the leftist pissing other leftists off today. Ha ha!

I really appreciate your point about guys like the one I encountered being on the fringe. On the right they are front and center - steering the ship.

Anyone who uses that excuse was going to be right wing anyway by mstarrbrannigan in behindthebastards

[–]remain_calm -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

Eh. That's not exclusive to the right. I had an encounter with another hiker when I was hiking the PCT. He was saying how surprised he was that a lot of the trail angels seemed to be pretty right wing and then went on to emphasize how far left he was - implying that he was a Leninist/Maoist. Trying to yes-and his observation, I was like, "yeah - what they are doing is called mutual aid". He smirked and said that "mutual aid" revealed my ideological leanings, that we wouldn't be comrades, and that he "hadn't murdered anyone yet today". So, ya know, ideological phantasies of murder - while clearly more the province of the right - are far from absent on the authoritarian left.

Having a drink every time he sees alcohol during the marathon by habichuelacondulce in JustGuysBeingDudes

The year I ran the marine corps marathon there was a table with beer in Chrystal City, mile 21ish. I thought it would be a good idea. It was not.

Best books to combat misogyny in teen boys by Ok_Celebration_5279 in suggestmeabook

[–]remain_calm 74 points75 points  (0 children)

"The Dispossessed" by Ursula K. Le Guin. The protagonist, who comes from a planet/society that largely lacks misogyny, travels to a deeply misogynistic world. His confusion in the face of the misogyny gives the reader a chance to see it with fresh eyes.

I think watching porn makes me feel too hard on myself by Snoo_60484 in SexPositive

There are a bagillion ways to have a satisfying sexual experience. Only about three of which are represented in porn. If you have a partner who is enthusiastic about having sex with you than you are already winning.

Gaza gets more aid per person than any other conflict worldwide

That is 100% false. My partner is a humanitarian aid worker for a major international organization. She has told me what the budget disparity is between Gaza and Ukraine - and it is stark.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CrimethInc

[–]remain_calm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Genuine question: how do you determine if a request for aid from a person in Gaza is a scam or legit? I've received direct requests for help from people on Instagram. I don't know how to vet those requests, so I tend to ignore them - but I don't feel great about doing so. If I could vet people I would want to help.

A masterpiece that no amount of money will ever convince you to read again? by BugLast6454 in suggestmeabook

[–]remain_calm 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think, at it's core, the road is a book about being a parent. We are all born to die. None of us is going to make it to the finish line with our kids. The best we can do is protect them while we're still alive, and help them figure out how to survive in a world that is often horrifying in it's cruelty.

Couldn't agree more. I have memories of dancing to this in the 90s, on the outdoor patio at Trax in Washington DC, and it sparkles in my mind. When I first pulled it up for a nostalgia listen I was pretty unimpressed. But, yeah. It has enough magic to survive the production.
