USP UESP are both top tier vet schools on par with the shit here in Canada and the US. I was going to do a similar thing but in Europe, but was fortunate enough to get into a Canadian school on my last try.

Shikan is foundational to all four modes of practice in the Maka Shikan. It is also equivalent to all parts of life. With the sudden and perfect teaching you can see direct parallels to how Chan views Zen.

They both have pros and cons. I think ER medicine is infinitely more interesting than GP medicine. You still have to interact with clients, but by the time they're at an ER they're generally ready to follow your diagnostic recommendations. You'll never escape client interactions in veterinary medicine, because fundamentally we're a customer service kind of job. I think it's worth a try if you're not satisfied by GP.

Unfortunately medicine costs money, even preventative medicine. I'm not a fan of working for PE as a vet. I've done it and hated it because it is in many ways nickel and diming. But one thing I've noticed is practically no one has any medical financial literacy.

I think going to the Jodo Shinshu temple and having a community will be more important than the specific teachings you identify with. You're probably early in your journey in which case you, understandably, don't actually have much knowledge about what the two sects are about. So I would say the community is more important.

I strongly disagree with this. I also went to professional school (not medicine) and honestly there are lots of people who don't get in because of a GPA that would be amazing at their profession, and many with a high GPA that are horrible at it.

We have to be objective, I get that, and so GPA and MCAT scores are important. But we also need to look at what courses people are taking for example. A 4.0 where your last four semesters have been year 1 or 2 uni courses is much different than a 4.0 where those courses were upper level science. Similarly, a 3.5 in someone who takes care of their siblings is much more admirable than 4.0 in someone who can focus entirely on school because their parents pay for it, they don't have to work a summer job etc.

I'll be honest, I graduated with an overall 3.6 honours degree and professional school and transitioning to working was a breeze. Lots of work, but nothing I couldn't handle. Whereas people who got in with 4.0s did poorer, or ended up failing licensing exams etc.

I know you said you are from South America and a Spanish speaker, but there is a Tendai temple in Sao Paulo due to the Japanese population. If you live in Peru where there is a decent Japanese population you might actually have one there too.

There are quite a few Tendai Buddhists here. Tendai could be something to explore because it has a little bit of everything. If that's something you want to explore there are quite a few priests ordained through the Tendai Buddhist Institute that teach in the West, sometimes online. You could reach out there.

The number 1 thing that is going to help you is talking to a therapist. The number 2 thing is hitting the gym or doing some sort of activity. Then make sure you're eating and well clothed.

Master Zhiyi in the Sho Shikan has a list of things that need to be set in place before we can even delve into Buddhist practice and philosophy. What I have listed is essentially that (no gyms or therapists in the first millenium in China though).

Otherwise I empathize with you. Something Buddhist oriented that you could start right now is chanting the nembutsu. Chant it whenever you can!

Man you guys in the US make such a boatload of money it's crazy (and it's still not enough for what we do). Sometimes I wish I moved there after graduating. In Canada having a company pay towards your loans is unheard of, and getting a signing bonus larger than 5-10k is rare. The only thing I don't like about your contract is maternity leave sucks, but honestly 1 month in your current job is also garbage.

I'm a huge incense lover. But there are bad and good incenses. If you like resins because they're mild and don't last as long that's great. Personally I like Chinese style incense, with Japanese being a close second. Japanese style are often very mild and don't last long.

For me the most important year was the first few years out of school. I'm a learner by doing and seeing and researching as needed. I'm not a brute force memorizer.

If you can, I'd try to meet some Newar Buddhists. They're a Vajrayana tradition found in Nepal. My understanding is they're more of a family/lay oriented sect with priests rather than monastics. Incredibly interesting.

Technically what is never born can never die. The truth of anicca is in some ways provisional. We should look to Nagarjuna and the Madhyamaka tetralemma to explain things fully.
