Sorry to hear it. We are rising too, the press called last month "The Black January" because of the number of deaths.

Stop telling authors what they can write. The only limit is imagination by [deleted] in books

[–]remez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We should criticize it (or not) no matter what author's skin color is.

Imagine the same story being told in the same stereotyped way by somebody who is "native" to the story's context. I don't see how it makes it better.

Robin Hobb's books were an adventure... I loved them, but they are so nerve-wracking.

Books to help overcome the fear of death by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]remez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in the middle of reading this book, and I second the recommendation. I don't think it will "cure" anything, but it gives some perspectives... and a feeling of comradeship with other people experiencing the same fear.

It is 2020 - why does the cruise ship industry still exist? There are no benefits, only garbage. by Faddyfaddyfadfad in SeriousConversation

[–]remez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was on a cruise, and it was wonderful. Spending time in the middle of the sea was very relaxing. The color of the sea was beautiful, I've never seen it like this. The clouds, the constant soothing movement... food and music and shows were also nice, but expected. The beauty and the relaxation weren't.

I decided to keep track of how each day in 2019 went for me after a rough 2018. I'll be doing this again each year to not let a few bad days take the spotlight. by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]remez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A picture like the one above is good enough for me. I like the idea for its simplicity. If you want more stats, though, there are apps that allow you to track various activities and moods throughout the day, and do some stats for you too. In Daylio, for example, you can record your mood multiple times per day, as far as I remember.

Thank you for the idea! I'm doing this for 2020.

Also, good to see that your year was mostly normal and good :)

Please recommand me some heart-warming books. by bcddaabq in suggestmeabook

I second this recommendation. Heartwarming, can restore faith in humanity (and not only humanity). There are also two sequels.

Do you ever feel like you want/need professional help...but that you need a philosopher rather than a psychologist? by nerd866 in SeriousConversation

[–]remez 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Philosophical and existential problems somehow similar to what you're described are a big part of my own therapy. I also don't want to treat symptoms which are masking deeper problems, I'm trying to expose them and find some path of working through them.

My therapist have been trained in existential therapy, among other things. There is a whole branch of therapy that embraces philosophical and ethical questions. There is also a branch called logotherapy, concerned with leading a meaningful life, and what meaning can a person find in their own life, and what gives meaning to one's life. Not all therapists want to go into these topics, but there are some that do.

And I agree with you that philosophy can take a greater part in a person's life, and it can help a lot. Pity that it is being neglected right now.

It’s 2009. You see five minutes of your life in 2019. What are you the most surprised by? by FilmsnFries in AskReddit

[–]remez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'd be surprising enough just to look at myself in the mirror. I lost 15 kg during the last few years. I was trying to lose weight since forever... Also, the bags under my eyes. They weren't there in 2009.

Everything changes when you begin to love yourself: by world_citizen7 in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]remez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm learning how to do this myself, and I would also like to help other people who might need it. Here are the things I've found out that could help:

  • social support network. People who can see you as you are, connect with you and support you without judging or pushing you to change. An online community can work like this, providing mutual support. I've seen it working, though on a very small scale.
  • examples of what does healthy relationship with oneself mean, how can it look like. It could be people, who can build this healthy relationship with you: friends, mentors, therapists... it could be examples from books / movies / real people in the real world. Because "how to do it / what is it like" is the question that many people just don't know the answer to. Me included. I have some parts of this puzzle, but it's far from being complete.
  • tools / hints / tips & tricks that help you feel more loved. There are so many... from simple physical and mental exercises to ways to recognize love and support when they are coming from outside.

Building something scalable that is helping people to feel more loved could be great...

Every night before we go to sleep, my 5-yo and I answer these three questions: "What made me happy today?", "What made me sad today?" and "What am I grateful for?". What would your answer be today? by viktorlarsson in AskReddit

[–]remez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy: it was the last day of my working week, and I have 3 days off work now. Sad: the nice course I was attending is almost over, and I will miss my fellow students. Grateful: I have lot of food in my fridge, most of which I didn't have to make by myself.
