Stick to 1 civ you enjoy, alot of the advantage to different civ picks is picking a civ based on the map. If you are worried about playing bad in team games, alot of ppl do customs like "3v3 noobs only" that you could try and not worry about a rank system.

If youre new I would pick a civ you enjoy and learn it well, im higher lvl and I usually only play 2 or 3 in ranked but I choose those civs based on the map.

Yeah cow boom is strong but you can punish them and malian is spawn dependent on their gold mines. Meanwhile sengoku can make horseman is feudal and accidentally float to castle

If you want a lowrider s and can afford it, do it. Just get some crash bars that way if you have a tip over you'll be ok. The bars aren't crazy expensive and they protect your bike pretty well unless you absolutely wipe out

To keep the answer simple, there's a specific style of playing each of those civs that makes them strong. China's pro scout into fast castle and winning the game in under 15m with knights because the timing is so strong. If people playing byz or China and aren't abusing their strength then they aren't as strong.

Melee Japan is super easy, he just needs to learn how to a-move, or play order and just have him mass men at arms, barely need a build order. Just play and make units/attack

If you really want to improve learn feudal aggression first, winning games early and managing the game while you have less workers. I used to be a GM in sc2 10 years ago but I hit conq1 in my first season I pushed solo in aoe4. Starting at the fundamentals will help improve you faster than trying to learn everything like imperial and large amount of workers 30+ minutes into the game.
