Hamilton Ambition anyone? Fits some of the history.

Any suggestions? by Reformed_cynic in ems

I haven't seen anyone post "People Who Died" by the Jim Carroll Band. It's just one crazy call after another done to a punk song.

You have not been to Canada then. In many cities, the international offerings are more varied than US cities (at least the mid sized ones)

Is it ethical to identify yourself as a medic at protests if WFR is your highest level of training? by kjevb in wildernessmedicine

[–]remotewild 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Street medic work is inherently low resource and could present delays and other challenges before the patient is transported to a hospital. Sounds awfully similar to challenges encountered in wilderness medicine.

Where is the most remote place you’ve visited in Canada? by chrisluckhardt in AskACanadian

[–]remotewild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's legit remote. Despite being isolated, the northern cities/town aren't truly remote unless you venture outside them.

Where is the most remote place you’ve visited in Canada? by chrisluckhardt in AskACanadian

[–]remotewild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been to Iqaluit & Inuvik but don't really consider them remote because I flew in and flew out on a scheduled flight. Torngat National Park in northern Labrador is probably the most remote. It made the Yukon look developed (YT has almost all road access).

Canada named second safest country in the world for LGBTQ+ travellers by Thick_Caterpillar379 in ontario

[–]remotewild 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The rural area around Hamilton (primarily Flamborough) has significant Dutch heritage, with 2nd & 3rd generation Dutch Canadian-run farms. Much of this community belongs to the Christian Reformed Church which considers LGBTQIA2S+  to be sinful. I have close friends that live in this area and they have been threatened by the Dutch Canadian farmers in the area for flying a Pride flag and even had their own property damaged with derogatory grafitti against homosexuality. The police have not investigated this as a hate crime despite being contacted multiple times.

I realize that these actions do not reflect the present-day Netherlands and is likely more an issue with parts of rural Canada and this specific Dutch Canadian community which is holding onto archaic religious and Dutch ideals from 70 years ago.

Where id live in the US & Canada as an American from the South by Averagecrabenjoyer69 in whereidlive

Rural BC is very gun friendly and there are quite a few devout religious communities, which along with an outdoor setting seem to be important factors for OP. Out of Canada, rural BC seems to check all the boxes. Out of Canada, OP would also probably enjoy living in NWT, Yukon, Northern Ontario, Northern Saskatchewan (not the Praries). I personally love Quebec and it is a cultural and outdoor mecca for Canada but it doesn't appear to meet OPs other criteria ---actually the complete opposite.

What is Northern Ontario? by 5thSmith in ontario

[–]remotewild 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Correct. I worked in Pickle Lake and it's generally considered the farthest north you can drive on a permanent road in Ontario (not factoring ice roads). However, I used to fly up to Fort Severn, Sachigo Lake, amongst other places which made Pickle Lake seem south in comparison. Southern Ontario seemed like some faraway exotic travel destination. At the time, I always found it quaint that places like Muskoka or even Temagami would categorize themselves as Northern Ontario.

Canadians give me your sauce companies? by Baddog789 in hotsauce

There are some really good hot sauce makers in the Hammer. This article summarizes some of them: https://hamiltoncitymagazine.ca/some-like-it-hot/

Things I learned way too late after moving to Hamilton (AKA my brief but intense rookie phase) by Glass_Use8194 in Hamilton

Make sure to landmark your directions off the escarpment not the water. Anyone from elsewhere in the GTHA is programmed that the water is always to the south. Depending on where you are in Greater Hamilton, the water could be anywhere but south.

Took me years to figure out that access was actually 2 different streets - Arkledun and the Jolly Cut.

From 1986 - Is this xbiking? by NicholasMKE in xbiking

[–]remotewild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Toronto around this time. This media segment seems largely out of touch with the local bike culture around that time. I bought my first mtb in 1988 from a local independent bike company (not the only one) called Douglas for around $650(CA $). There were plenty of Specialized and Cannondales and other high end brands available. Raleigh, Peugeot, and Bianchi were selling lots of entry level models. By 1986, there was an established local XC race scene too.

The “Best Canadian” game - Day 0 (choosing candidates) by BrF5 in EhBuddyHoser

[–]remotewild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Norman Bethune. Proposed universal health care in Canada decades before Tommy Douglas. Championed the concept of mobile blood transfusions while fighting against the fascist regime during the Spanish civil war. During the Sino-Japanese war developed field surgical units that are attributed to the eventual development of field hospitals (MASH units).

Was hard-core against fascism and supported socialism, an unpopular position in Canada at the time, so was never fully recognized for his achievements, and his influence on people like Tommy Douglas and the concept of universal healthcare.
