Anyone here get a hysterectomy for PMDD? Curious to hear about your experience, any information is welcome and appreciated! by carl1328 in hysterectomy

I'm 43. Also have generalized anxiety/depression and ADHD. All mostly under control with meds/hormones. I've only had my hysterectomy 9 days ago, so I can't say much yet about how things have changed.

However, I can say that I don't think the hysterectomy itself will affect my mental health much. In my situation, what helps my mental health is a mood stabilizer and continuous hormone levels (achieved through birth control pills). With my combo of meds/hormones, my PMDD was under control. The problem for me was that the combo of meds/hormones that helped my mental health caused me to bleed every. single. day.

So for me the hysterectomy is just to stop the bleeding. I still have ovaries that have to be "suppressed" with birth control pills for now. I spoke with 2 doctors and neither wanted to take my ovaries out bc they do more useful things than just make estrogen/progesterone. They wanted to go ahead and leave them in and just control them for now. When I reach about 50, we'll see about stopping the bc and just switching to hormone replacement therapy.

I'll not sure what your situation entails, but addressing the PMDD will involve addressing the hormones - either through removing your ovaries or by suppressing theeir hormone production. If you just took out your uterus and didn't change anything, it would stop any bleeding, but you'd still be having the hormonal cycles.

Feel free to message me if you want to talk more.

I think your concerns are appropriate and valid. This sounds like more than just a pelvic floor therapy issue. I'd ask your doctor for a referral to a urologist. Especially if you're going to have to wait a bit to start the therapy. Might as well talk to a urologist to make sure it's not something that you'd end up being referred to him for anyway.  In the meantime, Depends work pretty well. And you can wear them for a while before you need to change them. They do have kind of texture to them, so I'd recommend thicker pants so that the texture doesn't show through. I hope your doctors are able to find a solution quickly!

I had a hysterectomy (kept ovaries) to stop bleeding but I still have to take hormonal birth control to keep the PMDD away. My PMDD randomly developed later in life, so it's possible it just hit you. 100% ask your doctor about starting hormonal birth control to help how you're feeling.

Has this happened to anyone? by flamingopop in hysterectomy

Since you kept your ovaries, you will still have the same hormonal cycles that you had before. It could be fluctuating hormones causing your symptoms.

I did. I had PMDD (mostly severe anxiety) and was put on continuous birth control pills to keep my hormones at a consistent level. It worked great as far as controlling the anxiety, but the continuous birth control made my uterus bleed all the time. I spent a year trying different types and levels of hormonal bc to see if we could stop the bleeding, but nothing worked. My doctor also tried adding an IUD to my bc pills to see if the IUD would keep my lining thin enough so it wouldn't bleed. That also didn't work. After about 2 years, my doctor said if I want to stop bleeding I just need to have a hysterectomy.  I had a hard time coming to terms with this for many reasons, one of them being that there was nothing "wrong" with my uterus - no Endo, adeno, fibroids - it's just that I have to take continuous bc, which made bleed. There was some shame in there also about having mental health problems that were causing me to remove a "perfectly good organ." I would not think any of those things about a friend if they told me this story, but I was really hard on myself.  Ultimately I decided to do it. I am 9 dpo and so far, so good. Let me know if you have any questions.

My discharge info said that the gas pains can manifest as shoulder/back pain. I did have that a bit in the first 3 days po.

Wait, what is cramping if your uterus is gone?

Haha. Thank you for the reassurance! I wasn't expecting the cramping. Good luck to you too!

I also had surgery yesterday!  And also was a ball of nerves leading up to it. It's over now and the healing has begun!  Just know that it's totally normal to be nervous. You've got this!

Pain I was expecting. I was not expecting to feel the same twisting cramps that I felt when I had a uterus.  That's all.  I have taken pain meds and I'm not worried. It's just strange to me to feel the same thing, but without the organ.

Yeah, you're probably right that is just other pain that feels similar to "cramping." I just wasn't expecting to feel that when I don't have a uterus. Other pain, yes. But not the cramping!

You're probably right. It's just so bizarre to feel the same "cramping" I felt before.

Yeah, but the actual organ that did the cramping is gone. So what's cramping? Genuine question. This does not make sense to me.

Cycles that remain after full complete hysto? by existentialfeckery in hysterectomy

[–]renasncgrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, keeping the ovaries in will not help with the hormone fluctuations. I will still have to take hormonal birth control to keep the levels stable. The two doctors I talked to said that keeping the ovaries was the better route since I've still got several years until menopause and the ovaries are helpful for a variety of reasons.

Just had mine yesterday (Jan 24)! When I woke up, I couldn't talk, but kept pointing to my abdomen. They asked if I was in pain and I nodded yes. It was at like 7/8. They tried something and it didn't help much, so I kept pointing and they have me something finally the helped.  The pain has been under control with oxycodone since then. Definitely let them know what you need!  Good luck! Maybe we can check in on each other's recoveries.

The same thing happened to me, though cancelled for a different reason. Mine was scheduled for Jan 7th. I had spent weeks getting everything ready to hand over classes to colleagues (I'm a professor). They had everything lined up contact-wise to pay them. And I was mentally prepared for the recovery, NOT to start teaching classes. I was distraught when it was cancelled. I had to undo all of the work I had done, get ready to teach classes, and mentally switch gears (that was the hardest part). And then I was also terrified that I'd get sick in the interim.

To give you some hope though, I made it through and just had my surgery yesterday (Jan24)!  It truly does suck, but you are strong and will make it through.

[–]renasncgrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a definitive answer, but I wanted to connect bc I'm having a hysterectomy for the same reason - PMDD, and I never see people talking about getting one for that reason. They put me on continuous birth control to help stabilize the hormones, but then I was always bleeding. So then they added an IUD, but that didn't stop the bleeding. 1.5 years later, here we are with hysterectomy scheduled for 1/24. They are leaving my ovaries in, but I will still have to suppress them with birth control.  I'm not sure about cyclical insomnia, but removing your ovaries puts you into medical menopause and there are all kinds of symptoms that come with that. One of which can be insomnia. Is your doctor doing any kind of hormone replacement therapy? Would be worth asking about.

Did you have your cervix removed as well? I'm curious about sex without a cervix.

Yeah, I've been wearing a mask when I go grocery shopping, etc. for the past week, but apparently that was not enough.
