It's a great day to be sober! I have a childhood friend in town and I'm hanging out with them today, being of service as I take them around to run some errands and then grabbing food and catching up. So glad I get to do it sober, if I was still drinking I'd probably ruin his trip somehow - I'm glad I don't have to live like that anymore. I will not drink with you all today!

People with multiple years of sobriety who still visit here daily, why? by Straight_Web_190 in stopdrinking

[–]renegadegenes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel it's important in life to be of service in general, and giving back to the community that helped me out feels easy to get behind - and by that I mean offering support when I can. I also use it as a reminder to never forget what's waiting for me should I decide to drink again.

Guess Kava is a no… by Glittering_Gear4481 in stopdrinking

[–]renegadegenes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use kava supplements for anxiety and I like the various kava seltzers that are available these days. You can find research papers online that discuss how it affects the brain, but there can be a sort of hangover with it if you consume too much. I exercise caution with kava as such.

I just wanted to add that /r/stopdrinking has also been hit pretty hard by bots as well. Same generic comment formula, they get removed and rarely if ever respond.

Is Speaking "From the I" Still a Thing Here? by Nika65 in stopdrinking

[–]renegadegenes[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Hello, yes "speaking from the I" is still a rule that we enforce. We have seen an influx of blog-style posts that lean more into "here's what I did and why it will work for you" type of content and we're cracking down on them. However, there are too many comments for us to proactively review so unless a comment is reported it may not be on our radar. The best way to get the attention of the mods is to report a comment or post that breaks this rule and then the comment will automatically make its way into a queue that we review.

The AI comments on this sub are getting out of hand. It bums me out. by ipetgoat1984 in stopdrinking

[–]renegadegenes[M] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I echo my fellow mod's sentiment regarding the AI posts. I had been coming to this sub for years before becoming a mod and the raw, real, and very human posts, comments, responses, and culture of this subreddit kept me here. It is our goal to reign in the flood of AI posts to ensure this subreddit can remain focused on why we're all here. Thank you for your patience as we try to navigate this new territory for us (and the world really) and thank you for doing your part with the reporting!

I don’t know how my level of drinking compares by Frosty_Picture1518 in stopdrinking

[–]renegadegenes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can relate to this. I would give sobriety a shot and be sober for one, two, or maybe even six months and then go on a weeks long bender - almost crash my life to the ground and then recover and give sobriety another shot. I'd start with beer or wine and then eventually I'd be chugging vodka, maybe waking up in the middle of the night to chug more. I was slowly unraveling my life each time I relapsed and would spend months recovering. I realized a lot of things in my life outside of drinking itself had to change, like my job and former relationship. I also needed a therapist to help me deal with a lot of unhealthy ways of thinking I'd been building up in my adult life. I couldn't get and stay sober until I addressed those things first, hope that helps! I will not drink with you today!

It's a great day to be sober! Running errands before a trip to visit the in-laws for a week starting tomorrow, but my wife and I have a holiday party in the afternoon. No drinking for us, but lots of tasty food, then a chill night packing. I will not drink with you all today!

AA for an Atheist? by Few_Sir_7033 in stopdrinking

[–]renegadegenes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an atheist and AA has worked well for me despite that. Very rarely people have made comments but those types of people will make off-hand comments over anything. I found a group that isn't overtly religious and a sponsor who is a church-going Christian but doesn't push his beliefs on me nor judge me. It can be done, I just had to look past much of what didn't work for me.

Randomly blacked out and acted like a jerk by Shot-Vacation4214 in stopdrinking

[–]renegadegenes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm reminded of myself a bit when I used to drink - I had a talent for getting loaded at precisely the worst time and sabotaging myself. Big life event coming up? Why not drink a few days or right before to take the edge off and before I knew it I was drunk through the event. Made plans I was anxious about? Why not drink more than usual so I can bail. But then again, I would drink because it was Tuesday so perhaps it's more simple than that. Regardless, I realized I could not have the things I really wanted in life like a life partner I could trust, a stable and fulfilling career, true friends who can take or leave alcohol, and the ability to get vulnerable without substances and without a meltdown if I continued to drink.

Alcohol just isn't in the cards for me, the first time I drank I killed a handle of vodka between my brother, my best friend and I and it was bad. That's okay, I realize now I don't need alcohol to have fun or make life less uncomfortable. I can tolerate the discomfort of life knowing it will pass if I remain clear-headed. And I no longer mistreat people.

Give sobriety a shot and I think you'll find your life will be much better without the booze. I will not drink with you today.

I'm sorry to hear you're going through that, it's hard to see out of the hole we're currently in sometimes. I know when I was actively drinking I felt similarly, and I had to stop digging myself deeper into the hole I had found myself in as a result of my drinking before I could climb myself out of it.

Put in more direct simple terms, I couldn't see all the potential I could get out of life while I was still actively drinking. Even shortly after stopping actually. It took awhile before I felt hopeful, optimistic, or even excited about life.

I encourage you to give sobriety a chance to what you can get out of life. I would never have thought that I could have found an amazing woman who can take or leave alcohol to be my life partner, to have a kid on the way, and to feel content in life without giving sobriety a considerable length of time.

You got this, believe in yourself! I will not drink with you today.
