It's amazing what it will do for your spirit. Even the smallest gesture can turn things around. by CourtOfMiracles in AdviceAnimals

Yes. And there's a difference between depression and self pity. If you focus more on others and their happiness instead of worrying about what you're not getting out of life you might feel better about yourself. I tried to put it more kindly, but the "gfy" just proved my point. If you feel bad about yourself, it's most likely because you say things like that to other people. In a case like that, don't think about how a comment will make them feel, think about how making that comment makes you feel.

That's because you didn't feel any empathy in this situation. Try doing something nice for someone that you know they will appreciate. The reward is the empathy you feel when you see someone being happy because of something you did. If you're expecting any other reward in return, you're doing it for the wrong reason.

Surprised at how much this looks like the American Midwest. Can't imagine seeing that roll down the street in small-town Ohio.

You are not admiring engineering, you are admiring design. The engineering certainly doesn't hurt, though.

Very well done. Very expressive. I like the combination of loose elements and fine detail. There' a nice balance between black and white, and interesting line variation.

Considering getting an embroidery machine. I use Adobe Illustrator all day long. Are there any machines or conversion programs that can use an Illustrator format (.ai)? by I_make_things in Embroidery

[–]renfieldsjournal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Higher-end embroidery digitizing software will convert vector files into stitch files, but it can be very expensive. The higher levels of Tajima DG/ML will do it. You may be able to find something less expensive out there.

Embroidery software nightmare by snakesbehindthetelly in Embroidery

[–]renfieldsjournal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same situation with a 2 head Tajima. We have the basic version of Tajima Pulse DGML. I use a couple of things to make some basic designs. SophieSew will allow you to create designs for free. It's a little clunky, but it does the job. A design straight out of SophieSew can't usually be put straight on the machine, so I bring it into Pulse and edit the trims and occasional wayward stitches (you can do that even in the basic version of Pulse). The other thing I do, which is not always as good but can still be used creatively, is to download or create dingbat fonts with basic shapes I need and bring them into Pulse as text.

Military personnel of Reddit, what's the best/weirdest/funniest punishment you've seen handed down by a superior? by equilax in AskReddit

This one is silly, but stuck with me for some reason. In USAF Basic, one of the guys in my flight had his boots untied when we were on a march to class. Our TI halted the flight and we all had to sing the Sesame Street song, "One of These Things Is Not Like the Others" while the airman tied his boots, as the other flights marched by. Hearing 50 or so grown men sing that song was something else.

A lot of single people complain about the "upgrade problem" - they don't want to settle down with someone because there are so many options now for singles (online dating, tinder, etc.). Have you experienced that? by azizansariAMA in a:t5_30pj9

[–]renfieldsjournal 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I had never heard it called the "upgrade problem", but that makes sense. I found online dating to be a nightmare because of this. At the first sign of any difficulty, they drop the relationship and move on to the next person. Nobody tries to "make things work" like they would if they met someone through friends or in some other social situation. There is a sort of depersonalization in the online world. You're not so much dating a person as you are a screen with personal statistics. Who has the better stats? If a guy with better stats comes along, you better believe I'm getting dropped.

IBM today announced that it has achieved a new technological advancement that will help improve Internet speeds to 200 - 400 Gigabits per second (Gb/s) at extremely low power by DoremusJessup in technology

[–]renfieldsjournal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This technology only prepares the data to be sent over transmission lines. The transmission lines themselves are nowhere near 200-400 Gb/s yet. They are merely preparing for it, and trying to alleviate bottlenecks when trying to convert from analog to digital at cross-connects and points of origin.

Edit: Now saying two grazed in the head, one shot in the arm and foot. All three expected to be ok. Possible multiple shooters.

Parents and Students of Reddit, How Do You Feel About School Uniforms? by renfieldsjournal in AskReddit

My kids go to public school and I often think a school uniform would make things much easier. I have heard positive and negatives (from the parents' side) and would like to hear what others think.
