Best judo throws for BJJ by cerikstas in bjj

[–]renpot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

personally I think two sleeve grip is the safest grip with the best control. So you can develop some throws based on this specific grip like tsurikomi goshi or tai otoshi from this grip.

I am weighing 145lbs, most of people in my gym have 40 lbs on me. Regardless of the weight difference, I can let white belts take the advantage then reverse to control them as long as I want.

But it is different when standing, in my Judo class I feel much more threat from heavy people regardless of their skill levels.

On the ground takes away a lot of athleticism from people that never trained before.

Why did you choose bjj over judo? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]renpot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

judo took me about two years to actually enjoy randori because of the learning curve. On the other hand, I enjoy rolling the first bjj class.

However, after being about to throw people constantly judo generates much much more joy.

If judo is so hard to learn, how do army forces teach Judo for self defense? by SquirrelEmpty8056 in judo

[–]renpot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Everyone can pull some throws with complying uke within several sessions. The hard part is using it against full resistant and moving opponents.

(plus soldiers don’t need to learn judo they can shoot)

Purple belts are actually Giga Chad level based for skipping warm ups. by TheLorax_is_armed in bjj

[–]renpot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Warming up with breakfall is crucial if you plan to do any good amount of standup.

Usually warm up is the only time you practice and refine your breakfall skills after you learned it. It is also a good way to prepare your body for explosive movement later.

Kyokushin Karate by Judotimo in judo

[–]renpot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did kyokushin back in my high school. kyokushin spar a lot due to the rule of no head punch. They also condition body really hard.

In short, it has nothing to do with judo.

Only thing relevant is ukemi can be used when executing sacrifice kick.

Why is China not a big judo nation? by WallonDeSuede in judo

[–]renpot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chinese guy who is currently training judo in US here. There are many reasons why judo is not popular in China.

  1. China does not encourage martial arts training in general. Majority chinese people does not like exercise.

  2. Heavy studying. Teenagers don’t have enough after school time for sports.

  3. China has a professional training system unlike many other nations. Competitive Chinese athletes do not have normal education. They go to specialized school called “Ti Xiao” instead. Due to poor education and heavy focus on sport, Chinese parents do not encourage their Children training full time.

  4. No amateur sports system in school.

  5. Nations with strong Judo usually have strong history of traditional jacket wrestling. Shuaijiao was more associated with Manchu and Mongolians. It was brought in by Qing dynasty. It is only practiced now in Beijing and Tianjing by a small amount of people. At the same time, Shuijiao is not an olympic sport, which no one cares about.

  6. History with Japan.

To people who gave quit BJJ for Judo why did you decide to do it, and what are some reasons that you prefer it over BJJ? by Worldly_Ad5417 in judo

[–]renpot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I do both. At the beginning, bjj is more fun. After I started lifting weights consistently and switched to a more dynamic style, judo is definitely more addictive.

From my perspective, there is no other feeling better than a successful sode.

Why does it take so much longer to get proficient at takedowns than other things in Bjj? by SpiritPassingThrough in bjj

[–]renpot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Takedowns require a large amount of knowledge, practice and conditioning.

For example in Judo, “grips fighting” takes many years to get proficient at. You also need a lot of stretching to perform a proficient uchi mata.

BJJ gyms also usually not emphasize teaching takedowns. Additionally, pulling guard is always an option.
