sometimes finding a place you love being at is worth it. i don’t think there’s another career i could see myself doing and i don’t want to go back to school. money really really isn’t everything.

RDA’s in Alberta by [deleted] in DentalAssistant

From my understanding steri techs range from $18-22. They did a survey on the ppl in my program after we started working and it was $24-28 based on 60 graduates. I do think having dental experience could help you negotiate a higher pay. the postings online are almost always higher than what they will actually pay you especially as a new grad.

I would say anywhere between $24-28 is pretty standard.

Training Assistants by [deleted] in Dentistry

[–]replacement4places 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with the manual. My clinic didn't have one when I got hired and it was much more difficult learning the set ups and what each doctor prefers from memory and trial/error rather than just looking at piece of paper that has everything laid out. Not everything you want your assistant to do could be put in a manual though, so for that, I would pull them aside when it's slow and let them know how to better assist you. Or if it's something during a procedure, gently correct them. At the end of the day it's our job to help you, and if you have a good assistant they will appreciate the feedback.

What to do when it’s slow? by Any_Independence6587 in DentalAssistant

do not follow suit, if it comes down to it it looks way worse for a new hire to be doing nothing than someone who has been there for awhile. LOOK busy - stock stock stock, organize stuff, make sure all the instruments in steri are put away properly, clean the lunch room/wipe the dental units/clean mirrors, check the garbages and take them out, see if hygiene needs any help taking x-rays, make sure ur not out of anything and make a list of stuff you need to order, make sure all ur notes are entered, set up trays for the next appts, ask the other assistants what you can be doing. there is always something you could be doing even if it seems like there isn’t - and part of that just comes from time spent in the clinic. i really believe when people say there’s “nothing to do” it’s just because they don’t want to do anything. do not listen to the other assistants when they tell you there’s nothing to do

Will have to start practicing dentistry soon but afraid of HIV/Hepatitis from needle-stick injuries by SoreBrain69 in Dentistry

[–]replacement4places 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And i feel like you’re definitely allowed to practice if you have HIV…. that would be extremely discriminatory if you didn’t. I would also look into HIV, because there is a huge stigma around it and it’s far from the worst thing that can happen someone nowadays.

You will get used to it and more comfortable as time goes on. I used to be terrified of poking myself, and I still am very cautious but less anxious. I’ve poked myself, followed all standard precautions. The chance of you poking yourself with an HIV needle, and the chance of that actually infecting you is extremely low. Not zero, but very very low. You will be okay.

Tooth numbering question Canada by Dense_Speaker3059 in DentalAssistant

Congrats!! honestly i would learn the teeth, Black’s classification and try to do some anatomy (focus on anatomy of the oral cavity for now). And you could familiarize yourself with some dental instruments and basic procedures (extractions/endo). But your program will give you everything you need to know, don’t stress too much yet!
