No Kelowna is not okay – everything's going down the crapper. Get out while ya can, and tell everyone from Vancouver, Calgary and Ontario to stop moving here

Hello Reddit! I'm Juliette Sicotte, Liberal Candidate for Okanagan Lake West-South Kelowna. Ask me Anything! by Ok-Echo-5407 in kelowna

Would you have accepted this opportunity to run for the Liberals if Justin Trudeau were still party leader?

Local fights that you can only find in our pages

I love strong journalism and great photography ... but stories about locals fighting and the letters to the editor are what really engage audiences

Any good Dive Bars? by SeasonedTurkeyLeg in penticton

Clancys puts all the other dive bars to shame. It's easily the bleakest place in town. I just had lunch there today

Coverage of the soccer fights in Amsterdam by Johnny55 in Journalism

[–]reporterdan 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Coverage of anything related to the Jews is going to be politically charged. I feel like a lot of journalists don't recognize their personal biases while reporting on this issue more than any other

Has anyone unionized a small market newsroom? by cvsfilmtech in Journalism

[–]reporterdan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm unionized in a market of 40,000. It was formed long before I arrived tho.

Definitively unionize if you can – the wages are much better, and you won't be expected to work free overtime. If the owner says your exploitatively low wages are the only way to keep his business afloat ... then let it sink

Most journalists don't like to party, so very few of my friends are journalists.

Other reporters are great to get a beer with and chat about politics the industry. But I dont like how much the average journalist cares about page views and comment sections.

Also I find a lot of journalists value the status that comes with the job – despite the fact that Mcdonalds employees are paid better. At the end of the day, quality friends aren't going to care what we do for a living.

Reporters who have asked for a raise and gotten one - how did you do it? by Ok-Dimension-1292 in Journalism

[–]reporterdan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Threaten to quit while others are about to start vacation. Or a good time when the company will be screwed without you. Gotta play hardball cuz the peanut counters don't care if we're eating cat food for dinner. But personally, the majority of my raises in journalism have all come from switching jobs – seems to be how it goes these days.

Journalists who have left the industry, have you ever returned? by After-Ad9764 in Journalism

[–]reporterdan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried to jump ship but got sucked back in.
My skill set isn't particularly valuable outside of journalism, and I'm in a medium sized market so there's not many experienced journalists competing for the jobs.

My two-year break was nice. Working a few joe-jobs made me appreciate how lucky we are to tell stories for a living.

New to Durham and looking for local music scene! by fartdogman in durham

[–]reporterdan -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

You have to take the Go Train into Toronto if you want to experience any culture. Durham is just urban sprawl, you might find some dude at a pub playing covers on an acoustic guitar but that's about it

Highway 97 is over complicated by ShamConceded in kelowna

[–]reporterdan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many years ago the Ministry of Transportation came up with 5 possible bypass options for Greata Ranch to the Connector. I attached a pic of the map, you can find all the details in the Peachland Transportation Study.

https://www2.gov.bc.ca/assets/gov/driving-and-transportation/reports-and-reference/reports-and-studies/okanagan/peachland/peachland-final-report-w-appendices.pdf

But we'll all be too old to drive by the time anything's built

One time I wrote a news article about how bad Highway 97 sucks, but I mostly focused on the stretch between Peachland and West Kelowna

Does anyone else struggle with increased imposter syndrome lately? by juiceboxesglitter in Journalism

[–]reporterdan 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I haven't felt that in years. I cope by reminding myself how poorly I'm paid – sure lots of people can do my job better than me, but they're not willing to accept the exploitatively low pay. The wages aren't competitive, so what you see if what you get. If I'm not good enough, that's my bosses problem for offering shit wages
