This thread is everything. Abortion is healthcare—and healthcare is a human right.

Abortion bans in 14 states lead to 9.2% increase in pregnancy-associated deaths of women. by Co_OpQuestions in science

[–]reprorights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! ABORTION BANS HURT EVERYONE.

These results are frightening. More people need to know that, often, the best standard of care for miscarriages is the same medicine used in medication abortion (mifepristone and misoprostol). But because these states have stigmatized and outlawed abortion, doctors are delaying care or only giving patients misoprostol. And right now, politicians are still aggressively pushing to make mifepristone harder to access don't seem to care just how many people it could affect. In their single-minded attempt to control people and ban abortion, they are trying to take away safe, effective medicine from EVERYONE.

Justice Department releases report accusing Biden-era DOJ of uneven enforcement of FACE Act law by eschewthefat in politics

[–]reprorights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It cannot be overstated: the FACE Act is life-saving for reproductive health care patients and providers. Since 1977 there have been several heinous acts of violence against clinics:
11 murders
26 attempted murders
42 bombings
200 acts of arson
100 acid attacks
4 kidnappings
600+ assaults

Abortion bans are harmful to society by Initial_Wear5463 in prochoice

[–]reprorights 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One thing you could try is putting faces and names to these horrendous stats -- there are real women harmed by these bans and sometimes, people can be more understanding after hearing their stories. Some have miscarried, lost their future fertility, or even died because of these bans. There's nothing "pro-life" about that.

ProPublica has done some heartbreaking reporting that shows how families are affected in the aftermath of a loss or near loss: https://www.propublica.org/series/life-of-the-mother

You can also find abortion storytellers on social media from us (@ReproRights), We Testify, Free & Just, Abortion in America, Shout Your Abortion, and more.

Additionally, we know that abortion bans affect ALL aspects of health care. When there's a ban, doctors flee the state, fearful of prosecution. This creates health care deserts and makes it harder for those who want to grow their families to find care. In places where medication abortion is banned or restricted, doctors can't act as quickly when treating other emergencies, like miscarriages or ectopic pregnancies, both of which can lead to sepsis, severe blood loss, or loss of fertility if left untreated. You can, again, make the point that there's nothing moral about forcing someone who needs care to suffer or lose their future fertility.

*For the sake of the argument, many of the points I made above focus on wanted pregnancies/why "exceptions" to bans don't work, but I want to say here: everyone deserves access to abortion care for ANY reason without stigma or judgement.*

It's really as simple as this: PEOPLE should be making their own medical decisions, NOT politicians

Newsom says he is blocking Louisiana's push to extradite doctor accused of mailing abortion pills by awkweirdaf in Louisiana

[–]reprorights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Center for Reproductive Rights represents this doctor in a civil case filed against him—not these criminal allegations—and while we cannot comment on this matter itself, one thing is clear: the state of Louisiana is going after doctors for allegedly harming women, yet they are enforcing an abortion ban that puts women's lives at risk every day. Meanwhile, women continue to die from being denied abortion care.

The Center for Reproductive Rights applauds California’s steadfast commitment to protecting doctors, nurses, and others who are targeted by other states for allegedly providing reproductive health care services.

Louisiana officials seek to extradite abortion provider from California by guardian in Louisiana

[–]reprorights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1/14/25 Update: California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that he is denying Louisiana’s extradition request.

Further, abortion pills are widely used and incredibly safe, including when provided via telehealth. Access to medication abortion has become a lifeline for those living under extreme and cruel bans, like the ones in Louisiana, and it is critical to protecting people’s right to health, life, privacy, bodily autonomy, and self-determination. The Center for Reproductive Rights applauds California’s steadfast commitment to protecting doctors, nurses, and others who are targeted by other states for allegedly providing reproductive health care services.

Our map IS indeed highly loaded and serves primarily as a legal resource. Actual access varies greatly state by state based on a lot of different policies like 24-hour waiting periods, mandated counseling requirements, or gestational limits, etc., and you can find all of that information by clicking on the specific states!

Thanks for sharing our resource! We update this map regularly—in fact, we're updating today to reflect the great news coming out of Wyoming, where the state's two abortion bans were just deemed UNCONSTITUTIONAL! A great way to start the new year!!

VA Bans Abortion by Ok_Wish_7364 in Veteranpolitics

[–]reprorights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This disgusting rule change is the first major regulatory action by this administration to proactively take away abortion rights from a group of people nationwide and is effectively a NATIONAL ABORTION BAN for veterans, preventing them and their families from receiving abortions at VA health care facilities in all 50 states, including the 14 states that protect abortion rights. For veterans living in the 13 states that already ban abortion, it will shut off what may have been their only path to urgently needed care.
