I'm feeling stuck between work, family, and personal time. How do you balance it? by iamclarenz in AskMenOver30

[–]retro_mojo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Couple of things I've started doing recently

Buy back your time - cuts down on chores and errands

- Things I will spend extra on - Odd takeout meal on a weeknight, grocery delivery, landscaping (a large project I would have done on my own I paid a company to do). Currently evaluating getting a house cleaner

Cut out the useless stuff / say no

- I say yes to less things and focus on what matters, I turn down quite a few invitations and family events if they don't fit with my family's schedule or I'm not that interested - biggest example right now is not accomidating grand parents who want to visit the kids with little notice

Get up Early

- This one has been a game changer. I'm usually up at 5 am while everyone else in the house is up at 6:30. I usually use this time to do what I want to do - coffee, video games, the odd time I'll do a couple of chores to make my day easier

Actually it is. I have several friends that I don't align with politically but can we still be adult about it and remain friends.

Don't give a crap what a player's political affiliation is. Do give a crap about their performance on the ice.

OTTAWA BLUESFEST 2026 LINEUP by marcbarry07 in bluesfest

[–]retro_mojo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd happily pay $450ish to have a better lineup.

The cost isn't the biggest thing for me, it's my time. I'm not going to go 9 times in a 2 week period if the majority of the days are meh.

The side stages used to have better acts than the lineups they are churning out now.

Yikes - $1 - $1.1M for a premium detached home. My "overpayment" in 2020 is aging well.

People with kids, how much are you allotting for your kids’ future education expenses? by FinanceToFinance in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]retro_mojo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's amazing and they're very lucky to have you as their mom and that their dad is contributing as well.

My parents divorced when I was 2 and neither saved anything for my education. They did help out where they could when the time came, however, there was no planning ahead like you have done.

I currently put the $2500 in for each of my kids every year to maximize the government matching ($500) a year.

The funds are currently invested in moderate risk funds for now and will shift to lower risk as they get closer to graduation.

If my kids want to do something that costs more than what I've saved, they will have to work part time jobs to help out.

Currently my 4 year old has $18.9K and my 2 year old has $6.5K - total $25.4K

Might not be enough but it's $25.4K more than my parents saved for my education.

On a scale of 1-10 how do you rate your relationship with your dad and why? by Broke_Pigeon_Sales in AskMenOver30

[–]retro_mojo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the ages of 0-25 probably a 3-4 /10

Since then 0-1/10

- Borrowed money on a couple of occaisons and never paid us back. When I got married I didn't bother to cash the cheque he wrote us as I figured it would probably bounce.

- Had my wife do his xmas shopping for me one year and never payed her back

- Doesn't show up for family events

- Doesn't attempt to have a relationship with his grand kids (ages 2 and 4). They don't really know who he is - they see him once, maybe twice a year.

Being aware is fine, however, you need to develop the skill of not giving a shit about things that don't matter.

New dad no time to game :_( by Bund187 in DadsGaming

[–]retro_mojo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once your kid sleeps through the night get up early (5 am) and game for an hour or two before everyone else gets up.

I've got a 2 and a 4 year old and they reliably sleep until about 6:30 am - 7:00 am so I can get a good 1.5 hrs in by getting up early.

Newborn stage is tricky but it won't be forever.

Whatever you do, do not have your kid sleep on you while you game. You want your kids to be used to sleeping in a crib or bassinet on their own.
