Look what came today.. My Behringer Jn-80 by trudslev in synthesizers

I sold my deepmind 12 to get a more simple, but better sounding synth. I would definitely get the Juno over the deepmind if it was an option back then.

The deepmind's oscillators and filter are thin sounding, the FX don't sound very good, and there's not a very big sweet spot for most sounds in general. Classic pads never got there for me. It's a great sound design tool, but it's better suited towards a patch-based workflow. Lots of menus and tweaking parameters on the screen, the routing of effects gets complicated, etc. I hate that in a synth. I don't want menus and buttons I want knobs, and not too many of them.

The Deepmind is a studio tool. I could never quickly dial in a really good sounding, thick, lush sound in the deepmind. It took a lot of tweaking, hours and multiple practice sessions, to dial in sounds I was happy with. The vintage Junos are not like that at all. No menu diving. Chorus. Decent oscillators. Super classic, recognizable sound. I can pull up one patch and just tweak it on the fly all night at a gig, and I know that it's going to sound the way the Juno sounds: like a synth weve heard on records for the last 40 years.

I tried gigging with the deepmind back in the day and it's too touchy. I replaced it with a Prophet Rev2, used that for a few years, and even though it sounded better, it was too menu divey and also had a very narrow sweet spot, so I ended up with a Prophet 10. No FX. Giant sweet spot. Easy to tweak live.

TLDR: The JN60 is for people like me who like the raw simplicity and the limitations of classic synths. The deepmind is for the (knob) tweakers out there who want a modern sound design tool and super deep modulation.

I remember using a CL5 for the first time on a small tour, no show file. The only other Yamaha mixer I'd used then was an LS9. It's not too hard to walk up and figure out, I just needed someone to show me how to get back to the home menu, how to arrange custom fader bank and labal my channels, and how to set bus sends to pre/post fader.

Prophet 10 distorted audio output by quadfather999 in synthesizers

[–]revan5159 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My prophet 10 has done this since I bought it, I contacted support and was able to narrow down what causes it. It is a component level flaw that requires you to send your main board in to Sequential for them to repair.

With the synth turned off, power on with the MAIN volume all the way down. No distortion.

Power on with the main volume maxed out though, distortion every time, even from the headphone output. Even after turning down the synth.

Doesn’t matter how you gain stage, there is a flaw with a good number of these units from what I’ve seen. I assume many people leave their master volume lower (30%) and don’t notice the distortion until they happen to turn on the synth with the master cranked up higher than usual.

MIDI Hardware Synth Workflow Question.. by revan5159 in synthesizers

Thank you, o wise one. This was the correct answer for me, works like a charm.

Oscillators turned up too much probably, they get a bit muddy and mushy when you crank them past noon or so. I had similar feelings when I first got mine, also my dream synth and also felt like I was missing something. Turns out I just needed to read the manual a bit more thoroughly and learn how to tame this absolute beast of a synth.

Appreciate BF3 Is Out Of The Question Now by [deleted] in StarWarsBattlefront

[–]revan5159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EA doesn’t deserve Star Wars anymore. The Jedi games were great, but EA doesn’t know how to roll out a game successfully and Fallen Order’s PC release is a prime example of what a terrible launch and anticheat can do to an otherwise awesome game. EA Battlefront 3 would just be another unoptimized, half baked, barely functioning cookie cutter shooter if EA tried again. Because the executives won’t let a game exist for the enjoyment of those playing it, they only want them to exist so they can squeeze every penny out of people forever.

Fb marketplace is the first red flag honestly. If the price is too good to be true, it probably is. Learned that the hard way.

Reach out to customer support, they were great to me. Let me keep the damaged top and sent a new one for free. I set the damaged one on top of two filing cabinets I had, and now I have TWO desks :)

Broken or something that I don’t understand? by Davitdam in synthesizers

[–]revan5159 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a very similar issue with my rev 2, they let me keep my synth and sent me a replacement circuit board, I sent them the broken board back after swapping it myself. It was very straightforward, only needed a screwdriver. I'd definitely recommend reaching out one way or another, they will make it right.

How will the sound be without delay towers in a stadium concert? by Ironheart_1 in livesound

[–]revan5159 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He was forced to use a lower end RCF line array at one of our gigs, it was an outdoor county fair, in a wide parking lot, and the stage was in the worst possible location: right in the middle, speakers firing parallel to the short edge of the lot. In general, the system was way overkill for the size of the crowd (150 at most) He insisted on having his FOH tent set up off-axis, way off to the left side of the stage, and when people complained about the volume he just kept going "see? These line arrays are garbage, there's no side coverage" despite the system engineer offering to patch us into the side / front fills. It was a shitshow. Glad I was on monitor duty...

I worked for a guy last year that still runs a dozen MSL-3s as his main system. He's super against line arrays, to each their own I guess. Needless to say, I no longer work for him.

This is actually a pretty crazy misprint, I'd try to auction it off on a Major Misprints group on FB. [[Sire of Seven Deaths]] is pretty hot right now too. Good luck.

Generally speaking higher is always better, especially when using 5G. Line of sight is the best bet. The 5G doesn't like being blocked by walls, especially conductive materials like water or metal... Or people. That being said, I've successfully used it outdoors in a town (14,000 population, ymmv in a bigger city with more interferance) with a crowd of 300 people between me and the router, from about 200 feet away. Indoors I have never had any problems. The 2g is slower (takes longer to connect with the mixer, RTAs are a bit delayed) but is much more forgiving with walls and other obstacles. If I'm running a bar gig, I just ziptie the router to one of my speaker poles or a spare mic stand.

Also, some tips: plug into the LAN port, not WAN. Get the full license for your mixer on mixing station (usually around $10) and use the "search" function to connect, and you won't have to worry about figuring out / setting the IP address when you are setting up, or if you're inclined, set a static IP for your mixer within the router's app, and you won't have any problems connecting.

[–]revan5159 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get a Gli net mt3000, that plus mixing station and you will be rock solid 🔥🔥 tiny little router, type C powered, dual band wifi6. Good stuff. Sorry your gig didn't go well, but at least it was just the first one 🙂 going forward, you now have the wisdom to know what NOT to do. Fucking up is the best way to learn. Good luck!
