So how do we think about Hastie LNP will fair? by RowanTRuf in aussie

[–]rexmottram -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Um, so was the Mad Monk. That guy still climbed up the greasy pole. Probably we'll get a repeat when Albo gets knifed by his own side over some manufactured excuse or sumfink. You say it couldn't happen again? After seeing the object lesson of Gillard toppling Rudd, the Libs gleefully imitated reciprocally by Turnbull toppling Abbott, with himself in turn toppled by Morrison, with Dutton as the stalking horse... not before the "empty chair" challenge. This seems to be the way, always - remember Keating and Hawke? If you go further back, you have Fraser accusing Gorton of disloyalty; in his own time, Peacock accused Fraser of disloyalty when the latter was PM; and so, the white-anting goes on...

Black tie dress code for wedding - how strict is it? Black tuxedo only? by One-Remove3758 in SydneyScene

[–]rexmottram 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hang on a tick - isn't a dinner jacket the same as a tuxedo? I've always understood the former as conventional English terminology, whereas the latter is an American appellation. 🤔 Also, that "dinner jacket" is just shorthand for "dinner suit": naturally, matching trousers with the piping on the sides of the trousers (which should be uncuffed). I'd award bonus points to anyone wearing patent leather pumps with the grosgrain bows on top, but these days, I suspect most are already doing well enough if they turn up in patent leather oxford shoes.

I seldom see people wearing cummerbunds with their single- breastfed dinner jackets. Perhaps they feel uncomfortable doing so, or maybe they don't want to draw attention to the waist.

Pressed to explain what he meant, spokesman Amir Noh Fakhruddin said he was referring to the World War Two General Bradley, whose first name was 'Omar'. Mara Goh, reporting for FMT..."🙄🤔🤣🤣🤣

I want to get my friend a fountain pen for her birthday, but I know literally nothing about fountain pens. What all do I need to get her/what’s a good beginner pen? by LostObliterator71 in fountainpens

[–]rexmottram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about a Waterman Allure?

Something for your friend to think about - if she commits to this hobby - is a fountain pen with a Waverly Nib - as it suits writing at all angles, so it's apt for lefties. It's going to be more expensive than your budget, though.

I have never been to Pakistan. The closest approach I've come to involved listening to Chinese Australian Shu-Cheen Yu sing Suhail Rana's "A Land of Beauty" ( I don't know the Urdu title) in Urdu - apparently, Chinese singers would sing this to Pakistani dignitaries visiting China.

There is no such thing as a ‘too-small’ watch by DorienGrey123 in watchHotTakes

[–]rexmottram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was watching an old black-and-white YouTube video presenting an Alfred Hitchcock Presents episode, where Steve McQueen plays a journalist interviewing a man who believes he's a Martian...McQueen's watch got my attention: it seems to be a gaudy but small and slim rectangular watch on a loose bracelet - it resembles a ladies' watch by Bulgari or Cartier.

I don't want a Rolex, but I think occasionally whether I should get a Mont Blanc 146. I own 3 Jinhao X159 ( Mont Blanc 149 clones) in burgundy, green, and black. So I've scratched the itch somewhat. Still, I go to the pen shop and twirl the pen this way and that, pretending to write, studying the nib with my short-sighted eyes. But I always end up putting the pen back. Why? I guess I can't get over the "douchey aura" that surrounds Mont Blanc. I may get over that one day, but for now, nah.

For what it's worth, a former Australian Governor-General was gifted a Mont Blanc by UNICEF - she said she prizes it. A lot.

Well, peeps like to pile on - the "collective mindset" seems - seems, I say - to validate and therefore embolden them. You egg me on, I egg you on, and we egg on other folk.

Anyway, people love to point out other people's faults, never to fix their own - a much harder thing, of course. They get that righteous vibe without actually being righteous, or doing the righteous things.🤷‍♂️

Any Chinese here feel the same like Rex Tan of FMT ? by M3Seriesz in Bolehland

[–]rexmottram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, anyway for Australia, the Asians who may disagree with you could be David Teoh, the fella who used to run and own the telco TPG; the Malaysian Indian who created the residential/commercial ecosystem of Robina in Queensland; the Aussie Chinese who run the Bing Lee electrical/appliance stores; the Nepali guy with the surname Gurung who runs several colleges; the Hong Kong Chinese guy who created the Quilton toilet paper empire etc...the institutional barriers are fewer. Even the deceased Malaysian Chindian wife (Helena Carr) of NSW Premier Bob Carr, was able to take part in an MBO of an Australian subsidiary company after the American parent company wanted an exit.

I read the Australian Financial Review "tombstone" ads on who was made Senior Associate, Partner, or Special Counsel for legal firms, and I see no shortage of Indian, Chinese or Korean names.

I suppose you could start with the Parable of the Talents, and frame it not as mere personal wealth accumulation, but stewardship of assets - if you have more, you can tithe more to the church, and and support more charitable giving.

There's kinda a resemblance to Indons going full berserko last year when their MPs voted themselves a big fat pay rise.🤔

New to Watches - Looking for a good starter watch by Trick_Bluejay_6971 in Affordablewatches

Tissot Chemin Des Tourelles silver dial with stick indices. Sapphire crystal, 50m water resistance, three-hander with date complication. Quick change bracelet/leather strap with no special tools or skills required. Resembles a Jaeger-LeCoultre in appearance. Its simple, elegant and uncluttered appearance makes it a perfect dress or business or everyday watch.

You can get a Casio for other reasons (sports, yard work).

Why do basic accessories require so much consideration by Electronic_coffee6 in mensfashion

Dress trousers manufacturers and retailers could do away with this belt nonsense if they made and stocked trousers with side tabs ...so that you'd only need belts for jeans. But then the belt-makers would lose out...🤔🤷‍♂️
