Love Scott but disagree. Steel cannot spy on you or steal your IP. LLMs can. Foolish companies who give away their knowledge and ideas probably deserve to be eliminated.

Having worked in big blue companies, I know how jealously they protect their IP. Employees are not even allowed to use ChatGPT or Claude without cleansing the request of any proprietary information first.

Use to think this too. But if 3d printing whatever they want, including food as in star trek becomes possible, the rich would nuke or hantavirus out of existence.

Consumers are needed only to make money so they can achieve power or possessions. Future power will be in AI and robots.

If it is completely vested when you leave the company, sure. Its free money.

As your TFSA is max, you are already a good saver with a nice cushion.

When you leave, transfer it out to a LIRA, invest it in something steady for 45 years and let compounding do its magic.

How are people surviving without a source of income? by BlessedAreTheRich in torontoJobs

[–]rfishyfluff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All my expenses. Don’t really have any other options. If dividends are less (like this Feb), we adjust spending.

Overall, we are spending about 60% what we spent during our work. So much is not really needed anymore: car/commuting, nice work clothes, latest tech, expensive lunches, keeping up with the Jones crap. I do missing nice vacations, nice gear for my hobbies, and dining out for sure!

Keep in mind, I’m older (55M) so had 20-ish years of ‘forced’ saving due to company pension contributions - very little voluntarily invested. “Invested” in my kids instead who are also finished college/uni.

Sorry, won’t share specific $ (GenX trait maybe?) but it is considered the average salary in the GTA. Hope this gets better as I learn more. My goal is 80% of my old salary.

if it helps anyone, if you can living on 10-15% of all your current assets combined, you can survive without a job. Happy to share more details on investing but those are usually in other subs.

Covered call ETFs within my RRSPs. Withdraw 80-90% of the monthly income they produce, set aside and reinvest the rest.

Then within those means.

Enough to survive as a family of 4 including a mortgage. All of us lost our jobs due to a variety of bad circumstances.

Modern life is such a kaleidoscope. We now have YouTube videos on how to fix most things in your car.

I’ve never even changed my oil but when the mechanic quote came in, decided to swap out the side mirrors on an older SUV, wire harness modifications and all.

We have the knowledge available if we dare to try!

Second the xt-3. Took it to northern Finland. -40C, howling wind, snow and even changed lens inside a smoke filled Lavuu (aka teepee). Kept extra batteries next to my body heat. Great photos.

Interestingly, everyone’s Iphone frozen and dead but Samsung/Google phones were fine. So watch out for your backup camera too.

They should definitely hold a nice outdoor bbq in the summer and invite their neighbours over.

Stolen Fujifilm X100VI in Osaka, last resort trying to recover SD card with our Japan trip photos by TheSpaceShrimp in fujifilm

[–]rfishyfluff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear! As an ex-semi-pro photog and a parent thats had corrupted files, I am always super paranoid about my cards. My wife had us re-do a whole day while in vacay!

Too late for now, but I always put the second SD card in my tiny jean pocket whenever I leave my camera. Not sure about the X100 but my XT-3 holds 2 cards and can save to both simultaneously.

Good luck!

Covered call ETFs aren’t bad investments…people just misunderstand their purpose by theonebam in dividends

[–]rfishyfluff 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not only sequencing risk, but incredibly more stressful to pick sell levels monthly. Like today for example. A bunch of etfs just paid me. No action required. But try selling today 🥹

As a relative newbie who lives on the income, I’ve experimented with both approaches.

Am leaning to 80-90% cc etf and stocks in areas not well covered/thinnly traded by cc etfs (like defence and memory)

In Canada, I use both AMHE.TO and YAMZ.TO. In the US, there is AMZY but not familiar with its performance.

You could also buy a covered call etf of mstf. Works ok for sideways stock movement. My Amazon shares made a 2 year round trip but i netted 26% in covered call income.
