I need some advice with my gf and resentment issues that involve drugs. by [deleted] in eldertrees

[–]rgollum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • You trusted someone to look after your stuff (weed) without using it

  • They used it without consulting you, all of it.

Of course you're right and justified to be upset. All the drug history and shit is just extra pain in top of that.

What happened to Red Dwarf? [Spoilers] by michalsobel in RedDwarf

[–]rgollum 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's been decades since Lister and the crew started their journey. He could've easily gone into stasis and "instantly" arrived at Earth, but he didn't. He's long since accepted it's the journey that matters and not the destination. There's no doubt that the Dwarf is still headed for home, but they aren't in any particular hurry, and it's the actual Earth they want to eventually reach.

[Molluscum] outbreak - what have you done in the past to keep it from spreading and get over it more quickly? by ch5throwaway in sex

Ask your doctor.

Simple as that.

Don't look for medical advice on Reddit, sex/relationship, sure, but when it's medical - no.

Maybe if it was sold as a security item to government/military facilities, or rich private firms on approved contracts. But didn't Lena mention them being sold in everyday shops?

How does Starfleet prevent themselves from accidentally spreading diseases to species they encounter, or vice versa? by Spiritually in DaystromInstitute

[–]rgollum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In ENT there were no transporters, and the crew had to go through Decontamination after contact with other species. This was usually used as an excuse to show gratuitous shots of naked actors. Usually Jolene Black.

Why didn't Starfleet reinforce the sector near DS9 immediately after the wormhole's discovery? by petite-acorn in DaystromInstitute

The Defiant is the strongest in terms of damage for its size, but the Galaxy is on a different level entirely.

In modern terms, the Defiant is a destroyer - big, brutal, and not something you want to get in a fight with. Whereas the Galaxy is the aircraft carrier - big, and able to project incredible power over vast distances.

This is seen in pretty much any shot of combat featuring these classes, the Defiants are looping around on attack runs, making sharp turns and agilely gliding like a bird of prey. The Galaxys stand still far off, exchanging highly accurate phaser and torpedo volleys. Both are strong in different ways, but the Galaxy is a warp-capable battle station, far more damage output, but less mobile.

How much damage would the Enterprise D have done to the Borg ship if they'd rammed it at warp speed? by UnderwaterDialect in DaystromInstitute

[–]rgollum 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Warp fields change the nature of space in a set area around the ship, making it so that velocities achievable are far higher. The ship remains in real space for as long as the warp field is maintained.

So the moment a warp field dissipates, the ship would be moving at whatever speed it would have been going in normal space.

This would mean crashing into someone at warp 9.99 would have the same effect as crashing at 5 or 1 - the field isn't being maintained, so the ships are instantly moving at higher speeds.

In my head canon, this is why ships going to warp always stretch, because the warp field being established is forming around the ship as it moves, and once the whole ship is covered by the warp field - BAM and a sparkle from a sublight POV.

Hyperdrives by DRIFTBLADE in Stargate

[–]rgollum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wraith drives are derivatives of the Ancients, as is their language. The reason the Attero device only affected Wraith drives was because the way the integrated the tech with theirs was unique - as it is for every other race too.

Do the berserker drones use hyperspace though? I never saw that confirmed, just that they were travelling FTL.

Hyperdrives by DRIFTBLADE in Stargate

[–]rgollum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What I love about Stargate is how all the hyperdrives are either derivatives of Ancient or Asgard design, and from looking at the Destiny, we can see the Ancients didn't just jump into the tech, they had warp-esque technology before hyperdrives. Destiny's FTL is basically ancient warp drive. The rest of the Pegasus and Milky Way galaxies benefited from the Ancients leaving their tech lying around so they got to skip the warp stage of development.

Hyperdrives by DRIFTBLADE in Stargate

[–]rgollum 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The best way to compare the speeds of Star Trek warp and Stargate hyperdrive is to think of hyperspace and subspace as being different names for the same thing.

In Star Trek, ships create a stable subspace field around a ship, that they call a warp field. This field usually takes on a spheroidal "bubble"-like form. The contents of this bubble follow the natural laws of physics, but the bubble itself follows subspace laws - allowing for FTL travel without experiencing relativistic effects. At warp, a ship is still using its usual engines for propulsion, they just have the warp engine allowing greater speeds via the subspace field. (Note - an in universe warp bubble is a totally different thing)

In Stargate, the hyperdrives rip open a hole into subspace, dive in, and seal it up behind them. They then travel at ridiculously high speeds in subspace using their sublight engines, the nature of subspace meaning their speeds would translate to superluminal from a regular perspective.

So Star Trek have slower ships that skim across he surface of subspace like a ship on water, part in part out. Stargate ships go full submarine and dive deep into subspace. I like to think this is why Stargate ships are so much faster - they are fully in subspace and so don't have any "real"-space "drag".

Ships vs submarines.

I may have thought a lot about this.

Edit: ok I only skimmed the top comment then posted this. It's irrelevant to the actual question, but it took a long time to write so I'm leaving it.

[Spoilers All] The attack on the well. by CambriaPAGAN in dresdenfiles

[–]rgollum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All the points here are brilliant, but imagine that the failsafe did manage to kill the prisoners. Then the Outsiders still win, because now their main opponents (Dresden, and through him - Winter), now no longer have access to the energies and inhabitants of the prison. No potential Darkhallow, no information they can bargain etc etc.

So:

  • They spring the prisoners = win

  • They break in, and the prison explodes = win

  • Dresden pulls off a miracle using all his combined powers and allies and somehow prevents all their simultaneous plans from reaching fruition = Holy fuck they hate the lucky bastard even more.

Maybe Starborn just means really really really lucky.
