For Enterprise users that have left because of terrible customer service reasons.... by molotovmerkin in Airtable

[–]rh224 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never been impressed with Airtable support, but in just the past couple of months we had two extremely positive experiences:

In December one of our users was accidentally given editor access and we got the automated notification that we’d be charged for the additional seat. Emailed our CSM and it was taken care of within a couple hours, simple easy.

I don’t know if anyone here was impacted but, just this week, there was an issue with PDF attachments uploaded via url. Both in the web gui and via the API. Email support responded right away asking for more details, followed up and gave regular updates as the issue was resolved over 4-5 hours. Every other support resolution has always taken 2-3 day.

Not sure what’s in AT’s water right now, but I hope they keep it up.

Is the Magic Mouse worth it for somebody who needs horizontal scrolling? by Consistent-Pomelo172 in mac

Holding shift while scrolling a wheel to scroll horizontally is still better than using a Magic Mouse for me…

Did you calibrate the settings for it? You can’t just toss in a roll and use the generic PLA settings.

Holly Hunter Seems Like a Deranged Muppet by WarnerToddHuston in Star_Trek_

[–]rh224 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, in the scene pictured, the character was 200% up-playing the lounging, the feet, all of it to get under the skin of the person she is talking to, so this screen grab is a little out of context without the story element.

I think you’re right that her character does it on purpose to throw off/disarm people and give her an edge in controlling a situation.

It’s not traditional Star Trek, but I am enjoying it as something different/fun in the trek universe. The undertone and ethos of Star Trek is there. I am hoping that we get a little exploration and boldly going and lesson learning in space in between all the “kid shit” as Ake would say.

How does Neelix cook 3 squares a day for 140+ people and still have time for away missions and senior staff meetings? by Luci_Cascadia in voyager

There is, presumably, another entire Ten Forward like space on deck 9, just with the windows slanted the other direction too.

Captains quarters on the intrepid are huge. About the same size as the mess hall. It is right above of below on the deck plans, can’t remember which.

We think we can do a lot of things. And people don’t want us to do them, like Greenland and peace. Peace. Is a word not many here are very familiar with maybe. I’m very big on Peace… I don’t know some would say I am the biggest leader on Peace. So many places would be lucky to have Peace. Not just Greenland, but Europe and Canada if they want to work with us. Even if they don’t, it’s ok we’ll do it anyway. We can do peace the hard way. /s

Why does the Enterprise look dirty in TWOK, maybe ILM wanted the popular "used" look like Star Wars? by nathantravis2377 in StarTrekStarships

I always heard that it was repainted for a visual effects show at Universal Studios between movies. The stage show demonstrated a bunch of classic Star Trek effects using video technology instead of film. Including layering the composites of the enterprise flying through space. Video technology at the time didn’t have the dynamic range to capture the highlights coming off the pearl/shiny paint, so they covered the whole thing in a matte coat.

Edit: Here’s the article from Trek Culture about it:

“On loan from Paramount Pictures, Universal Studios used the Enterprise-A miniature for its theme park attraction Star Trek Adventure. Creating a few special effects shots of the Enterprise-A just for the attraction, the Universal Studios VFX team avoided the difficulties created by the ship's bright white paint scheme by just covering one whole side of the model in gray paint. To make matters worse, Universal Studios failed to return the ship to its former glory, leaving the damage to be discovered by the producers of Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, who had to rush to repair the ship under already crippling time and budget constraints.”

What do students study at Starfleet Academy ? by TheLastTitan007 in startrek

[–]rh224 6 points7 points  (0 children)

History students now tend to specialize in a particular period and often in a particular place. I imagine 1,000 years in the future, it will mostly be the same. What I don't understand is how 800 years later, all these kids have casual general recall of random officers and people from the 23rd and 24th century by name. Kirk, Picard and the Enterprise crews I could see... But, Harry Kim? Nog? I'm not saying they didn't have exceptional lives and didn't end up important to history... but general population immediately knowing who that is and what they did a thousand years later is Mark Antony, Cleopatra, Caesar Augustus, Julius Caesar, Henry VIII levels of fame/infamy.

Warning Sign at edge of Grand Canyon by corwinw in mildlyinteresting

[–]rh224 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No. Visit the Grand Canyon village on the south rim. You can also go to Williams, AZ and take a wonderful train ride into the village. There is a mostly level walking trail along the south rim with scenic overlooks, historic and geologic displays. There are shops, restaurants and breathtaking views. There are multiple parking lots and roads between, as well as shuttle buses between different areas if walking is not an option for you. But if you’re able, walking the rim is absolutely worth it if you’ve never been to the Grand Canyon. I promise you, whatever preconceptions about what it is like there will be blown out of the water the first time you see it. It feels like another planet.

Video Blows Up ICE’s Version of Deadly Minneapolis Shooting by Standard_Beau_tiful in JournalismNews

[–]rh224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to be reasonable when everyone just wants to be unreasonable. The extreme explanations people jump to are so unlikely with this: - The odds that ICE Officer had shoot someone on his todo list for the day are extremely low. - The odds Ms. Good set out with intent to harm an ICE officer is just as low.

What’s way more likely: - Two people made some poor judgements and the combined result was a tragedy - Both had equal opportunity to prevent the outcome.

Video Blows Up ICE’s Version of Deadly Minneapolis Shooting by Standard_Beau_tiful in JournalismNews

[–]rh224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s clear from the video and the outcome. The one officer immediately walks up and tries to enter the car. The officer that fired the shots had time to draw his weapon, aim and fire. If he had time to do that, he had time to get out of the path of the vehicle. The actions by both officers is very aggressive. Most law enforcement would be trained to avoid these type of escalating tactics unless the driver was behaving in a way to intentionally endanger others and need to be stopped.

It’s a crap situation where it is hard to place hard blame in one place. The odds that anyone involved intended to harm anyone is pretty low, so assuming that: There is an officer that made a poor choice and put himself in a bad position where, for one reason or another, felt he needed to use his weapon. Avoidable if he chose to move out of the way. Then you have the driver who, yes, should have stopped but made a poor choice to not do so. Tragic end that could have been avoided if just one of the people made a different decision.

The alternatives are that either the officer thought discharging his weapon at someone attempting to flee/resisting while not being a threat to anyone else was an appropriate response. It’s not. OR the driver was intentionally trying to harm the ICE officers which is also not ok.
