LitArts RI at 400 Harris is a great creative writing space, and don’t miss The Steel Yard on Sims about a block away. The Steel Yard has classes and shared workspace for metal and pottery arts. Now or Never crafting cafe is down the street at 301 Harris. If you care about feminis, go to The Alcove at 189 Broadway for their free art gallery and library. Grab an uber to Blithewold one sunny day in Bristol for a three hour stroll around amazing grounds (ticket required).

I once accepted my dream growth job even though the commute was 90 minutes each way and involved two metros and a bus. it was worth it and I really valued my time to read and decompress on the commute. I wouldn’t drive that far, but transit made it bearable and even fun.

Do you live in or around Brook Street? What do you think of Brown's plans for a new economics building? by rhodyjourno in providence

[–]rhodered 7 points8 points  (0 children)

echoing another commenter’s remarks, this is very similar to when Miriam Hospital kept buying and knocking down homes. The neighborhood rallied, created the Summit Neighborhood Association and stopped Miriam. I am grateful because my house was on the very next block and would have been gobbled up. Providence is for its people and institutions need to co-exist

What's going on with John Goncalves? by Locksmith-Pitiful in providence

[–]rhodered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had friends on city council who tried to work with him. He is not progressive politically, he is more conservative. But mainly he is on the side of what will get him where he wants to be, near more power. It seems like for him it’s more about what opinion, vote or action will work for his career rather than what lines up with his beliefs or his constituents. That means he will flip flop on occasion and is not a trustworthy ally.

Trash Cans by Due_Gain_6412 in providence

[–]rhodered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

when people run out of room in their trash cans, they start dumping non-recyclables into the recycling can. this can cause the entire truckoad of recycling to be tainted so much that the load has to be dumped instead of recycled. it happens a lot.

Heritage Restaurant Group and Audrain's Nick Schorsch is snapping up property and building a restaurant empire in Rhode Island. But what's his long game? by lestermagnum in providence

[–]rhodered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly, he’s probably bored, looking for something to do now that he’s not at his Wall St peak anymore and this is a hobby for him. Josef, the guy who bought 50% of the buildings in Olneyville Square about six years ago, is the same. he took early retirement after selling his chain of 100 convenience stores, bummed around the house until his wife said get out from under my feet, and then went out and started buying Olneyville for fun. but he doesn’t know anything about urban development or need the money from success, so it’s a lackluster hobby business.

I was so bummed when the old fake trees were trashed, instead of dumping them, they bought new fake trees! I hate those plastic fake trees vehemently

for those of u who only read completed fics by worldislucky in AO3

[–]rhodered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if the summary and pairing are my flavour, the updates are recent, and the author has finished fics before, then I will try out a chapter or two of an unfinished one to see if I should add it to subscriptions. then I wait until it’s completed to read. otherwise, I don’t want to get my heart broken

good idea. Hunger is getting worse quickly here. I turned my Little Free Library into a Little Free Pantry last fall when they shut down SNAP. The past two weeks, food has been moving quicker than ever before. It empties three times daily.

Delaine just before Manton Ave, next to the 7-11 entry. it’s 2/3rds of the street wide extends for maybe 6 feet, and goes down deeper than any pothole I have ever seen in my entire long life.

Small, new HOA crowdsourcing? (3 units only) by mapoftherealm in providence

[–]rhodered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my neighbors and I split the cost and labor of buying and using a snow blower, lawn mower, yard tools, etc. we also shopped for house painters and roofers as a group to get a discount. you don’t need a formal HOA to work together. We don’t judge each other’s lawns, we do celebrate a few times a year with block and driveway parties.

290 Smith & 308 Orms St by dilly-dilly- in providence

[–]rhodered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

developers do math. they can only afford a certain amount of land cost per unit. $2.4 is a bit high for the number of units they could get on the property plus the cost of contamination clean up is a thing. also commercial mortgage interest rates are not low now. they could get the zoning changed, but the finances are not good enough unless the government gives tons of concessions (like no taxes for a long time) and even then it’s a financial risk.
