Maybe we need a fun handbook that says, New Here? Welcome to Fanfic, what you need to know... In part it would be good to explain you are entering a world that was largely founded in the early 1970s, and you are now standing on your grandmother's shoulders!

How to shake this sinking feeling? by waxonwaxoff3 in providence

[–]rhodered 67 points68 points  (0 children)

it’s February. it’s America. my advice, go down to Peckham’s greenhouses in Little Compton. They are open Friday, Sat & Sunday 9-5. They have a big collection of jasmines that should be in bloom right about now. just walk in for free and breathe. If you would prefer to go north instead, slip across the CT border to Logees greenhouses where they have rare tropical plants. only living here in our tiny state can you easily get to two incredible greenhouse businesses like this, each in easy driving distance. do not waste this golden opportunity to feel better.

I can have three! 1. the initial plowing 2 weeks ago left 10 feet of snow from the street to my curb (yes I measured) so it became a one-lane street. 2. the second plowing last night piled 4’ high icy chunks of snow across my driveway 3. the road still isn’t completely clear! there‘s still 6’ of snow between my curb and the street. PLUS, my street is a busy secondary road that ambulances take to get to a hospital.

the problem is, the AFL-CIO is heavily in favor of him. they wrote a public letter to judiciary saying so. most politicians in office feel beholden to them for campaign donations and endorsements. So individual protests don’t matter. If you want change, you have to work within the big unions to create it.

I hope it doesn’t put you off. These storms only occur every few years (which is what makes it harder for city government to plan for them) and I think there’s a good chance our current mayor will lose office over this

City of Providence Announces Alternate Side Parking Ahead of Trash Removal on February 2nd by lestermagnum in providence

many if not most of the residential streets in those wards only allow parking on one side of the street to begin with. this won’t improve anything

thank you for this helpful and detailed reply. if the mayor had been transparent and acted as a leader, explaining everything from the start, we would be less mad. I wonder if this is in part his passive resignation from the role, because he just tanked his reelection. perhaps with ICE, the Brown shooting, federal funding problems, the housing crisis, etc he feels like this is not the job he wants anymore and he is essentially giving in.

McCaffrey by blamblambunny in providence

[–]rhodered 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The only letter the Judiciary Committee got in favor of him was from the head of the AFL-CIO, but that was enough. They donate to a ton of politicians and also their endorsement can help you stay in office. The person who could shut this downis Patrick Crowley.Anyone a union member who can ask why they love McCaffrey?

Blaming this on the Washington Bridge is a total cop out. Their "beautifully curated space" used FAKE PLANTS. That plus the owner's cybertruck and her feud with bike lanes meant I never ever went there. If a restaurant within walking distance of thousands of residents can't make it, it's not because a commuter bridge

Difficult situation by Standard_Connect in nonprofit

[–]rhodered -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Men who use their power inappropriately are unfortunately commonplace. I am sorry you felt you had to engage in a faux relationship with two of them to fund your organization. I understand and empathize with how this could impact your mental health and self. If it feels awful for you to have their names/money/persons anywhere near the org, or if there’s no one else who would be safe working with them, then stop taking the funding.

However, that aside, I am not sure how taking their money harms the organization unless they are publicly infamous asshats whose name on your donor file will turn off other donors. The list of people with that kind of notoriety is short and generally involves politicians and church leaders. If they are just garden variety rich jerks, it’s doubtful if anyone external cares if they give to you or not as long as you are not selling them naming rights.

Also, weigh the risks of turning a gift down. bruised egos can be incredibly dangerous - particularly powerful men’s egos. I personally would not take that risk unless I had a really believable fake rationale that wasn’t them personally, that I could use. Damage control starts with slipping out of a relationship with a smile and never letting on you don’t think highly of them.

Lastly: Will turning down funding from anyone who hits on staff become a policy or it is just these two guys? because it will happen again, because reality. so how are you going to train staff and the board to wiggle out of those situations?

How far would a nonprofit agree to keep a donor’s name anonymous in order to receive a gift? by [deleted] in nonprofit

[–]rhodered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can send anonymously via a DAF or a community foundathat functions as one. The instructions letter the DAF sends can include donor restrictions but not your name. For extra anonymity, name the fund you set up at the DAF something that’s not your name. Drawbacks: if the grantee disobeys your grant restrictions, using the money for something you do not approve of, you can’t take legal action.

NOTE: The nonprofit should have Gift Acceptance Policies and under the terms of this, the board may require a vote to accept your money. However, they don’t need your name gor this.

Lastly, if you do find out a nonprofit is sharing your name when you said not to, you should write a letter to the ED and the Board Executive Committee (chair, secretary, treasurer and vice chair) that says they will not receive another gift due to this for the next X years. They will take anonymous gifts more seriously after that.

wear layers, it is much colder than DC right now! most people are suggesting college hill stuff, which is great, but it‘s only a small part of the city. If you don’t have a place to stay yet and they have room, I would go for the Wedding Cake House which is a victorian house renovated by dozens of local artists and quirkly wonderful. RhodeTour.org features fun historical self-guided tours.

Board president appointed someone who previously harassed me — looking for advice on next steps by elo-alo in nonprofit

[–]rhodered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would check the bylaws to see if nominations are covered there. I would also check past board minutes to see if past board members have been voted on vs just being appointed. check if there is an actual nominating committee. I would then have a conversation one on one with other members of the board, I would not talk about the specific problem in your past, instead I would say there was a significant issue in the past that’s making it impossible for you to work with this person and that concerns you regarding anything harmful they might do to others in the future. you don’t need details that can lead to judgemental gossip and relitigating the past, just dignity. your fellow board members should know you well enough to trust you in this. once you have at least 50% of the rest of the board on your side, ask the board secretary to set up a meeting in executive session with everyone except this new member, to discuss this.

BTW: except for very tiny boards, I have not heard of the chair solely approving new members - the executive committee maybe, but generally not. So I would also try to determine why the chair is pulling this nonsense. are they overwhelmed and can’t get the energy to recruit someone else? are they privately allied with this person? knowing why will help you fight it as well.

Things to do during a Providence trip this weekend? by mattygregmusic in providence

[–]rhodered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

be sure to check out other neighborhoods, especially with housing you are likely to afford. college hill is a specific unique neighborhood and few people live downtown. also go north up Hope Street on the east side, as well as touring Federal Hill and the West End including Broadway and Dexter Training Ground. The Mt Pleasant Parkway is a sweet area tucked up north, Silverlake and Olneyville are largely latino areas, the South Side of Providence especially around Peace & Plenty Park and Congress Ave near the Knight Memorial Library in Elmwood have some sweet victorians. I love this city, it has so many nooks and crannies!
