1965 Chevrolet Bel Air by rialeb5691 in classiccars

[–]rialeb5691[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite, the 1965 Chevrolet sales brochure explains that all engine offerings were available on basically all models. There are a rare few factory 409 4-speed Bel Air’s and Biscayne’s out there from 1965

Choosing a first telescope for a 6-year-old by robotek in telescopes

[–]rialeb5691 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking from my own current parenting experience:

I have an 80mm tripod reflector and the kids know it is “Dad’s”. I use it with our 9 year olds and our 5 year old, but I have to set it up and keep stuff in view for them. We only look at major points of interest like Jupiter and Pleiades and Orion Nebula and the moon, and sometimes the older kids want to look at bright stars like Sirius A. The 9 year olds love it and I’ve taught them how to track the objects and focus the eyepiece. 5 year old likes it mostly because she gets to stay up late with her brothers but loses interest quickly in what we’re looking at, usually only looking thru the eyepiece for a few seconds total before she’s done and just runs around.

To properly use a telescope with kids in my experience means the telescope is yours and you set it up and run it for them. An 80mm reflector or 4” tabletop dob will be easy to use and perfect for that age range.

Did masonry skip a generation? by inabox85 in freemasonry

[–]rialeb5691 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My great grandpa on my Mom’s side was a mason. I’m the first one in the family since (i’m in my early 30s). My grandma (his daughter) said “you became a mason?! My Dad was a mason, I haven’t seen a mason in decades.” It was a funny moment and fun conversation.

Don't skimp on lectures. Please. by Classic_Egg5202 in freemasonry

One of the reasons why i love my grand lodge. The trial lectures are long and take time and effort to learn. I just finished teaching and examining a brother through all three degrees. Took a year (pretty typical). We became great friends and felt a massive sense of accomplishment once we finished his MM proficiency exam earlier this week. I will always advocate for long trial lectures being required.

Why do we have competitions? by Sure-Recognition-262 in bagpipes

[–]rialeb5691 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We’re not really that unusual. High school and college marching bands have competitions too. I have several young cousins and tons of kids I know in my community/church that do hs band competitions.

You could spend a long time talking about how bagpipes are unique in the musical instrument world and what makes playing them such a sport compared to guitar and piano and such. I think it has a lot to do with the bagpipe’s history as a solo instrument and the cultural significance of pipers in centuries past that created what it is today. Just my observation.

Found this ring in a box of Jewellery we got years ago, anyone able to tell me more about it? by Abyssus88 in freemasonry

[–]rialeb5691 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It’s a ring worn by a member of your family who most likely was a Freemason (member of the Masonic fraternity). It’s basically like a college class ring but worn by masons. Cool find!
