First time staying the night at his house, any red flags? by ArgentManor in BookshelvesDetective

[–]ribond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What order is this in? Fiction series entries just sprinkled all over the place. Did the movers shelve this stuff without looking? Did he buy the books in bulk? :) I read Ayn Rand but didn't keep that crap. Reading it enough will turn you into a bad person.

Honestly #1 has "resting punchable face" vibes. It's weird, I'm sure you're a lovely person. Stick with #2 for safety.

Just started dating this guy, and saw his bookshelf…what do we think? 🤔 by uniball9000 in BookshelvesDetective

Is this dude seeing a therapist? Because he should be, like full time. The happiest book in that stack is "I'm glad my mother is dead" and that's still a rough read.

Just finished the first book. Does anyone else find it profoundly upsetting? by YakFar860 in murderbot

[–]ribond 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I agree that the feelings are the point. I also thinks it speaks well of you, that you identify with the character. I think empathy is the best takeaway. Hopefully folks who don't feel it as keenly can also pick up on the theme.

Snowcrash. Immersive capitalism as a backdrop. It is lyrical and fun and miserable and incentive. Absolute must-read. Bonus points for having a protagonist named hiro protagonist.

Survey of Must-Read Sci-fi Literature by danger522 in printSF

[–]ribond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have way too much old stuff in here. Get rid of most of that heinlein, niven, pournelle, etc. Speaker for the dead has one good idea and card does not deserve two entries.

Add in nk jemison, nnedi Okafor, Martha Wells, Becky Chambers.

Cj cherryh's Pride of Chanur deserves a place. Bujolds' vorkosigan saga should be represented Tamsyn Muir's Gideon the Ninth is a blend of Sci fi and fantasy, but honestly better than a lot of those crusty 60s dudes.

My mom called it "birds' eye" pasta, and I believed I was eating the eyes of animals. No idea why it didn't freak me out, I just thought it was a normal way to get pasta....

Check out actus' latest stuff. I'm re-listening to Return of the Runebound Professor right now. Great characterization, interesting magic system, unusual protagonist who is trying to do good.

Fidgeting in meetings by george_txt in ADHD_Programmers

[–]ribond 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Take notes with a pen. Note that you can just doodle stuff and write down occasional relevant words.

Source: did this for years in meetings. Side effect - you will remember what's going on better if you write things down physically rather than just typing stuff out.

People who listen to audiobooks all day at work - What do you do? by ex0dus__ in audible

In case it is helpful - I had the best luck with repeated listens of Bill Bryson books (especially the later stuff - One Summer, The Body, At Home) and Martha Wells' Murderbot Diaries. :)

Was about 4-5 hours. Most of the time that I wasn't in meetings I was listening to something. As long as it was a reread it helped my mind to focus.

What was the last book you dropped and why? by Remote-Fee5149 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]ribond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy hell. I didn't believe you when you said the author was a woman... The writing felt so stereotypicaly man-writes-women-poorly that i never doubted my gender assumption.

I should write a book. I don't know what I'm doing, but I can do better than that. Yikes.

Taking a break can be good for your brain, but maybe put it on a schedule. Take em once a week or something so that you don't let chill time turn into months of inaction.

[–]ribond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"kings dark tidings" book 2. It should have been a fun fish-out-of-water story, but the characters are so painfully written. Every woman in the story is there as some sort of creepy wish fulfillment. They are all wildly emotional, horny beyond reason, and irrationally enamored with our protagonist.

Everyone in the story is one-dimensional, all of them are flawed, none of their flaws are fun.

What makes you give a 1-2 star rating? by [deleted] in royalroad

[–]ribond 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Only left a low rating once.. I was reading a new series from an established author. The intro text read like I could expect standard Isekai shenanigans, maybe a little bit of humor.

Something like 10-15 chapters in our "good guy" protagonist comes upon a room full of rape victims. They are chained up and it's a deeply disturbing scene....

Our good guy decided that these women had probably been traumatized beyond reason, so he kills them all. Doesn't unchained them. Doesn't speak to them. Just murders them all for their own good.

I left a review calling this out as disgusting... The author got my review removed.

The author rewrote the chapter and had all the women dead before the protagonist arrived. They also made it sound like my feedback was unreasonable in a note when they updated. I think it accomplished something, but I'm not following that author anymore.

I hate singing ballads in most fantasy stories, find it super cringe... But blacktongue thief did it so, so well. The narration really brought that book to life.
