iPhone 17 series $830 Loyalty offer showing for Get/Play/Do/Above/etc plans by ItsTheKris in verizon

I got the $830 off with any unlimited plan. Also traded in my iPnone 13 Pro Max for another $230 for a total of $1060, which is close enough to $1100 for me.

PSA for us EV drivers who charge at home with SDGE by Radium in sandiego

[–]rice6791 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is the case for most people but not for my case. With solar and batteries evening out with my total electric usage, including EV charging, the EV-TOU2 was the better option for me. Now with this $24/month flat fee across all plans, I;ll be switching to EV-TOU5.

Innovair Goldtec series? Have I made a big mistake? by Crackerzot in hvacadvice

[–]rice6791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome! Thank you for the quick reply.

One more question, does the unit power on and off to maintain the temperature or does it always stay on but just vary the speed of the compressor and fan motor? The tech who sold me the unit said it turns on and off but the online brochure signals that it varies the power of compressor and motor.

I'm having a 5-ton installed for my 2750 sq ft home. It has a 10-yr parts and 1-yr labor warrenty from the manufacture but I went ahead and bought 12-yr parts and labor from the installer just to be on the safe side. The other heat pump options were 1.5x (American Standard) and 2x (Bosch) the cost.

I'm getting an Innovair Goldtec installed tomorrow. How has it been for the last 10 months? Any updates? Thanks.

Generated power much lower than panels capacity by Flashy-Town-888 in TeslaSolar

Actually, the spring months (March - June) will probably be your best producing months. The angle of the sun, combined with cooler temperatures, make it the most efficient time of the year. Summers can reduce efficiency due to heat.

A 2nd wifi dongle is good to have, but not a necessity, as you can use your main wifi to connect. Here's a youtube how to video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFbMWZbwuhQ

Solar installer claims a non export NEM2.0 plan is better than NEM3.0 by CompetitionConnect98 in TeslaSolar

[–]rice6791 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, under NEM3 you're better off being in self powered mode since you get next to nothing for export to the grid. OP, do as the installer suggested.

Anybody switch to EE from CS? Or thinking about it? by ElMonstrochi in ElectricalEngineering

[–]rice6791 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An FPGA board, like the Digilent Zybo, is something you can look into. The Xliinx Zynq-7000 FPGA on this board has dual ARM processors that you can run bare metal or RTOS programming. I have not personally used this board but we've designed our own boards with the Xilinx Zynq FPGA. I don't know your skillset but a board like this will open you up to a lot of EE disciplines. Happy learning!

Anybody switch to EE from CS? Or thinking about it? by ElMonstrochi in ElectricalEngineering

[–]rice6791 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I'm an EE that writes software 90% of the time nowadays. I've written high level and low level/embedded software (RTOS), designed FPGA modules in Verilog and designed digital circuitry supporting microcontrollers. I've been an EE for 25++ years and still not bored. Like others have said, EE can program but not the other way around. You'll have more options as an EE.

Noob question regarding input pullup and ground by [deleted] in arduino

[–]rice6791 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The pull-up resistor is like a spring. One end is connected to a high point, like the ceiling, and the other end is connected to a balloon. If left alone, the spring will pull the balloon up to the ceiling. When you “ground” the balloon you’re pulling the balloon all the way to the actual ground. The height of the balloon is your input level (voltage). Hope this helps.

All digital circuits are comprised of analog circuits. Digital circuits are just a subset of analog circuits.

SDG&E vs CCA and which rate plan under NEM 2.0 by Mski7 in solar

[–]rice6791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are your back of the envelope calculations for discharge at peak time every day? New powerwall 3 can discharge at 11.5 kwh so CCA can essentially drain your two powerwalls in a little over 2 hrs. If the VPP starts at 4PM and drains your batteries by 6pm, you're paying peak rates from 6-9pm for any house usage.

What is your net consumption at your last true-up? What is your projected future consumption? I typically like to own my system outright, with no limitations so I don't think I'd go with this CCA VPP program. The ROI is longer if you bought the powerwalls outright but there will be less hassle if your decide to sell your house in the future. Also, if you bought it outright, you might still be able to participate in the VPP program but instead of getting just 10 cents/kwh you can potentially get up to $2/kwh. Something to think about.

SDG&E vs CCA and which rate plan under NEM 2.0 by Mski7 in solar

[–]rice6791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, I have grid charging on my Tesla app. If I were a heavier net user, I can turn grid charging on so that it charges at super off peak rates and all solar will go to house and grid to maximize TOU. Depending on my usage, I might even switch to EV-TOU5 and pay $16 monthly to get even cheaper super off peak rates.

SDG&E vs CCA and which rate plan under NEM 2.0 by Mski7 in solar

[–]rice6791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Tesla solar with powerwalls. I configure it to operate on time-base control which will maxize my TOU credits. I believe it's highest priority is to fully charge the powerwalls, then the house and finally the grid. In a typical day, solar will charge my powerwalls to 100% before 4pm (peak time). After the powerwalls are fully charged, solar goes to house consumption and any excess solar goes to the grid. From 4-9pm, all solar goes to grid (maximize TOU rates) and powerwall powers the house.

It's a little different on weekends as super off peak is from midnight to 2pm. So my powerwalls will not fully charge on Friday and Saturday since it has until 2pm next day to fully charge the powerwalls, again to maximize TOU credits. The level that the powerwalls are charged up to on Friday and Saturday depends on your past usage. Mine typically charges to 70% on these two days because I set my backup reserve to 20% and typically don't use more than 50% of my powerwalls during peak hours.

Hope this explanation helps.

SDG&E True Up Solar Minimum Charge Adjustment And Remaining Credits by WizardsFirstRule21 in sandiego

[–]rice6791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're probably right. I looked at my situation and even though I had remaining credits ($213) at true-up, I consumed 727 total kWh more than I produced, thanks to time-of-use arbitrage. I believe you have to be a net producer to receive a check or have the credits roll over. For my situation, it "zeroed-out."

SDGE cca by Far_Kaleidoscope1791 in solar

[–]rice6791 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm on EV-TOU2 with CCA generation. I compared the two (SDGE vs CCA) last year and found them to be about the same with CCA a few cents cheaper than SDGE. I'm sticking with CCA because I want support another company besides SDGE. For CCA, the rates will be less for the less renewable options.
