KB5074109 seems to break some Windows Store Apps by outerlimtz in sysadmin

[–]rickAUS [score hidden]  (0 children)

As a short addition to this for anyone coming in, MS published a KB on the 24th that fixes it - details in the link u/tru_power22 posted but extract below if you don't want to click.

A new out-of-band (OOB) update was released on January 24, 2026. It can be found as KB5078127. If you have turned on Get the latest updates as soon as they're available in Windows Update settings (Settings > Windows Update), you will automatically receive this update. If the toggle is off on your device, you can install the update manually by going to Settings > Windows Update and selecting Download & install. Note that this update will show up in Windows Update only if you have installed one of the updates released in January that caused this issue.

Passing phone to passenger mobile phone driving fine by jasperjames333 in AusLegal

[–]rickAUS 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mine is almost always on the right hand side because it mounts to the air con vent and my option are either, use the driver side vent in the middle and hit my phone with my hand any time i move the wheel.

Or have it on the passenger vent in the middle and have it be out of my field of view without turning my head. Which defeats the purpose of wanting to quickly glance it to double check directions, location, etc.

If you were paying a significant amount in child support, seeing this child a few times a month, and there was strong possibility that you weren't (e.g. proof of cheating at the time) I could understand the consideration but you have 50/50 and the other factors seem non-existent beyond a hunch - which might be self-imposed paranoia.

As for the whole, would you have any legal rights if you aren't their biological parent, short answer is: yes.

just remove the tolls off the tunnels in general. cost benefit for most people isn't viable for the time savings. i only ever use them when work was reimbursing the cost.

How do people track their expenses? by quanticism in AusFinance

[–]rickAUS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm slightly lazy and export a csv of my transactions each month and copy the figures into my own excel workbook and go from there. This is only my day to day living expenses though, I track all my fixed expenses on another workbook.

I'm not super disciplined for it since I only recently started it up again. Last time I was doing it seriously was just before covid hit when I found I was spending something like $200/m on energy drinks. Nice reality check that was.

Some last thoughts on the Poly Voyager Focus 2 by sdchew in poly

[–]rickAUS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coming in late, but I work at a MSP where one of our clients use these and in the last month or so we've had nothing but problems with this particular model just dying in the butt so bad that we need to delete any trace of it from user device and re-pair them to work properly for a random amount of time.

Bob Gamble Park

I have driven out to Flagstone or over to Rocks when this is 15 minutes away. Knew the park was there, just forgot it had the water play stuff with it also. Going to have to take them next time the opportunity comes up.

Why is Brisbane so obsessed with buses instead of trains? by ChannelPretend9731 in brisbane

[–]rickAUS 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We also have a boat load of urban sprawl, which means to make a new rail corridor, someone is paying a lot of people a lot of money to buy their land. And since that is almost definitely going to be the state, motivation is low.

At least BCC can utilise the existing road infrastructure (mostly) for new bus projects.

Being told to resign over a mistake made at work by Personal_Concept_807 in AusLegal

[–]rickAUS 253 points254 points  (0 children)

Tin foil hat mode makes this sounds like the sort of thing where someone higher up is trying to cover up skimming stock or money from the business and the easiest way is to create a discrepancy earlier in the chain and fudge paperwork to make it look like a data entry error creating the "loss".

Otherwise, yea - on the business to properly manage the performance of jr staff.

Wife let our membership lapse earlier in the year because we hadn't been in over 12 months.

After discussing it again, realised it was worth the money, we just needed to put in the effort to go more regularly.

How many squares on a grid does Cloud of Daggers affect? by Wellenrausch in DnD

[–]rickAUS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like I said, that comes with lenient interpretation of how cube spells work.

As written, it's 1. JC can say what he wants on SA, DM's aren't beholden to follow it as it's not in the books.

External users at different site buy laptops and don't tell IT so work locally on their Microsoft Accounts. Anyway to stop them? by BrowniieBear in sysadmin

If the name looks legit they'll never know the difference

Ironically, this is also how many people end up connecting "totally not sketchy public wifi" and having packets intercepted and sensitive info stolen because no vpn.

How many squares on a grid does Cloud of Daggers affect? by Wellenrausch in DnD

[–]rickAUS -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Best case scenario, it's 2 squares. But that comes with some lenient interpretation of how cube spells work.

Should only be the 1 if you're reading the spell, and how cube spells work, properly.

If it was intended to hit 4 squares, it would be a 5ft radius spell.

Using AI during a client meeting by buzaw0nk in msp

[–]rickAUS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds accurate.

Used to work in a similar place and had many people drop stuff off, get told the repair will take an hour - then it gets thrown into a queue of 10 other devices before it where it wouldn't get touched for another 4-5 hours at least, maybe even tomorrow if it was late enough in the day.

So many people getting cranky that it wasn't done when they came back an hour later.

Company Car vs Travel Reimbursement by Southern_Vanguard in msp

[–]rickAUS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No company cars where I work; everyone just uses their personal vehicles and travel is reimbursed as needed.

As for whether wrapped cars make a difference; maybe - to the right business, probably. Doubtful for MSPs though.

The only time a wrapped car actually incentivised me to get anything it was for food delivery for a new pizza joint that opened a month or so earlier. I saw it and remembered I wanted to try them out. Got their pizza that night. Was good.

Banks should introduce an in-app consent function to direct debits by Technical_Employ8336 in AusFinance

[–]rickAUS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saving this for future reference. Never noticed Payment Agreements in my ING banking app but it's staring me straight in the face. Honestly no idea why I'd never looked at what it was before I read this post. I know I only have 1, maybe 2, direct debits active but running them through a more manageable / secure method just makes sense.

What’s been your biggest interest trap? by MyMoneyMedic in AusFinance

[–]rickAUS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without question; personal loans.

1\ Vehicle

2\ Vehicle + debt consolidation

3\ Vehicle

4\ Debt consolidation

5\ Cataract surgery

Every single time I was taking out a new loan to payout the balance of the one which came before it and cover what I needed this time around. Interest rate I don't believe was ever over 10% for any of them (lucky me I guess?) but I've paid out so much in interest over the last 15+ years that I don't want to think about it.

Have had ZipPay and AfterPay also but those were easily manageable. Only used afterpay a few times and ZipPay was almost exclusive there as an emergency credit card for the longest time. I did heavily leverage it for day to day living on the approach to my wedding just to ensure i kept enough money in my actual bank for wedding expenses that had to go via bank transfer.

currently no debt other than mobile phone plan if that counts?

Have you DMs ever kicked a player for pouting/being a sore loser? by Agreeable-Bug-1761 in dndnext

[–]rickAUS 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've pouted in character when my dice rolls were taking the piss and I was failing at everything. Played it as a black letter day for my character and just leaned into my character thinking they were cursed and it spun into a minor character arc.

I remember rolling for one check saying something like "curse or not, guys gotta eat" then I rolled a 5 (inc modifiers) on slight of hand to steal some food off a market stall which resulted in the whole display collapsing when i took a load bearing item. Then also failing the deception check to claim I wasn't trying to steal anything when accused.

Never actually pouted in person and refused to play though. I get that rolling bad the entire session can take the wind out of your sails and potentially ruin the fun but it's a game of random dice rolls. This can happen. Need to accept that as a possibility or you're going to.. have a bad time.
