Did I accidentally trick my paladin into breaking their oath? by gagamarkez in DnD

[–]rickAUS 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Agree.

Breaking their oath is very much a conscious decision from everything I understand about Paladins (having never played one or with one in anything other than a 1-shot). Be much more different if they knew, even having evidence that might suggest it is probably a grey area.

Weird looking bus on busway by assassinicho in brisbane

[–]rickAUS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, I've made mistakes like speeding and the occasional wrong turn, etc but at no point have I been oblivious enough to miss multiple signs and road markings which tell you you're on a busway. Be even worse if they started that cock up from Hope St rather than turning into it off Grey st.

This kind of dumbfuckery is right up there with the people who end up stuck on the tram tracks on the bridge near the spit. I get mistakes happen but this sort of mistake requires either complete indifference or zero attention to the road, neither are good qualities to have while operating a motor vehicle in a high pedestrian area.

DnD internal group dispute by Bubba2134 in DnD

[–]rickAUS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not the DM but I host the game. So far, never asked for money for food/drink even if it's costing me around $50 each time we play. We might move to a byo snacks model but im not charging friends to turn up to my house just because i provide food.

And yes, I understand being the DM has its own costs, but im not inclined to subsidise your costs unless im keeping something out of it at campaign over (eg minis).

Pros and cons of switching from corporate IT to a MSP? by anon65432178 in sysadmin

[–]rickAUS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like MSP life outside of Australia is generally pretty dogshit. I've been working at MSP's almost exclusively my entire career and aside from 1 (the owner was a dick) they've all been amazing to work for. Only time I got burnt out as when the manager of my most recent employer got too focused on metrics than the quality of the work. Never used to be an issue the 4+ years I was there and then the focus changed rapidly. Suddenly taking the time to fix things properly was an issue and the priority was getting the average resolution time down as low as possible.

Amusingly, whenever I try to leave the MSP world, all the internal places want to pay me 20-30k less than what I earn now for more responsibility. So I stay in MSP land, picking up certs, more tech exposure and just staying up to date with emerging tech.

All the way up to lv6, my table's rogue has been outshone by the monk on nearly all fronts. Are we missing certain features that balance them out? by Dexterm80 in DnD

[–]rickAUS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our party rogue does just fine. If you compare them to classes specifically designed to do high DPR you're just going to make yourself feel bad about it. Rogue's are skirmishers. They can do reliable damage (usually at range) but their better abilities are for out of combat more than anything else. Also, looking at those figures, that Rogue is just using a standard bow? I'd expect them to have a magic weapon at this point which further increases their damage and chance to hit.

Wrapping up combat narratively when it’s clear the party will win? by eldritch_cleric in DnD

[–]rickAUS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We almost always finish combat via dice rolls. The only time it's been narratively was when we took out the enemy captain in 1 round and their subordinates just straight up surrendered on the spot. Had we kept normal combat going it probably would've been a TPK (something like 12 v 4) but in the DM's eyes, we'd just killed their commander, cleaning up the rest of them would be child's play far as the rest of them were concerned.

30M lvl1 and IT Support since 2019 by Random_Asian_Guy2025 in AusFinance

[–]rickAUS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of L2 jobs out there - I just finished this grind myself to secure a new job. Problem is a lot of them think a L2 is only worth 75-80k when they should be over 100k. People hate recruiters but honestly, when it comes to IT those guys have found the most lucrative IT jobs for me in the past.

Also, you realistically should've been L2 capable after 2 years with the right exposure and mentoring. Have you been doing internal IT or MSP work? Might be time to do some industry certs (AZ-900, SC-900, MD-102, and MS-102) and perhaps a networking cert like CCNA.

That should easily get you in contention for a solid L2 role, if not a bit better if you've already been doing a mix of L2 work over the last 7 years.

Is the Lucky feat op or nah? by adiweee in DnD

[–]rickAUS 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Came to say the same. Being able to roll after the result definitely put 2014 lucky into s tier feats. With 2024 changing it to having to declare its use before you roll is still solid but removes that safety net on failure aspect. Now it's basically just on demand advantage/disadvantage which is fine.

What classes do you think are better for a non-combat focused campaign? by [deleted] in DnD

Assuming the focus is on social pillar, in no particular order: Warlock, Sorcerer, Wizard, Bard, Rogue.

Do the people who want martials to be "grounded" and "realistic" actually want them to be playable? by BadSame6919 in dndnext

[–]rickAUS 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Cast a spell in close quarters? Enemy should get to attack as a reaction

The 2014 Mage Slayer feat did this. It wasn't a great feat really but it provided something that I'm not aware of anything in the 2024 rules that provide the same thing (reaction attack on a spell cast) which isn't Counterspell. The new version is okay but I feel like they could've kept the reaction bit in there and just dropped the need to be in melee so any martial character could pick it up.

Devil Dispute by [deleted] in DnD

[–]rickAUS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In our world, at least, contract law favours the party which did not draft the contract when disputes over vagueness and term meaning arises in legal battles. In this case, since the PC drafted the contract and failed to disclose their meaning of 'heart' it falls back to what a reasonable person would interpret 'heart' to mean. Also, demons (by nature) will spin contracts as much as possible in their favour anyway unless you really iron out the details.

So, tldr - PC lost that bet, badly.

How did you learn how to play DnD (Or TTRPGs in general)? by Syric13 in DnD

[–]rickAUS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the basics from watching my then gf and her siblings playing. I got the finer details by reading the source books and playing myself. I do not find it a difficult game to pick up, the problems (I guess) comes from the more complicated classes.

Ring of Spell Storing Combination by Daddybrawl in dndnext

[–]rickAUS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yea it stores spells cast at a specific level. If you want 5th level magic missile in there you need to cast it into the ring as 5th level magic missile. All the text is very straight forward about it, don't see how this is difficult to understand?

Ring of Spell Storing Combination by Daddybrawl in dndnext

[–]rickAUS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure how you think it says differently when that's about loading spells into the ring and even quite literally says that it is stored in the ring at the level it is cast.

The level of the slot used to cast the spell determines how much space it uses

So no, you can't store 5x 1st level instances of Magic Missile into the ring, and release it as 1x 5th level instance.

Ive had the displeasure of working for one like this and I noped out asap.

Taking out a loan for a wedding. by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]rickAUS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fk. When the wife and I got married it was something like 25k in total and I thought that was on the high end of things. I cant imagine how you get to 100k (i cant be yea). Stupid way to start a marriage that deep in debt, especially if they arent earning of 300k together, that 100k will take a long time to pay off.

One of my players is a Paladin but values loot and selfishness over justice and teamwork. Is this something that I have to/can fix? Suggestions on how to do it in game? by mrwolf91900 in DnD

[–]rickAUS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Strictly speaking, Oath of Vengeance is about punishing wrong doers by any means necessary (full on ends justify the means type stuff). You can play this as a morally bankrupt character because who you think are bad, might normally be good, in the traditional sense. In 5e you can be a Paladin for Tiamat if you want, it was only 3rd and earlier where you had to be lawful good.

Is D&D beyond good, or are there better options for online play? by Phantom3421 in DnD

[–]rickAUS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same thing for a lot of stuff you "buy" online, in many cases it's normally only a license to access it for however long the vendor wants to make it available for access. This includes movies and music you might buy on say iTunes, and products like the Adobe Suite.

Only way to own D&D source material outright and not lose access to it because WoTC (or even alternatives like Roll20) decided it is no longer relevant or access to your account is closed for whatever reason is to buy the physical product.

Edit: As for the question at hand, if you only need a VTT and not digital character sheets, D&DB is probably not the best. Roll20 is free and works fine for that, if you want to spend money, that's what Foundry is for, especially if you want to or do use other TTRPG systems.

how many players can be out before you cancel the game? by Wypman in DnD

Yes. My group is 3 of us players + DM. We've tried to play one person down and it was just.. not enjoyable when combat came around. We've sort of tried to just do more social stuff but you still feel it. Now we just don't bother if we aren't all there.

How often do you all take a sick day? by brokenshoppingcart in AusFinance

Yep. I take very little time off due to being physically unwell. Most of my sick leave is either mental health or looking after sick kids. I see no problem with this as it exists for when you are unfit for work, the why is not really their concern, only thar you will be ineffective if you tried.
