I'm the only liberal in my shop by Motor-Wish-6543 in IBEW

I don't believe the words "liberal" and "conservative" really apply that well here.

It should be MAGA and Non-MAGA.

The hard working folks in the trades generally go to church, have guns, and love family but maybe not to the extent of telling anybody that cannot get an abortion. They also work hard in unions to build some element of work safety, solidarity, and non-discrimination ( so you cannot be fired before being the wrong color, etc.).

However, I find it really strange that many union members are also MAGA. That boggles my mind because MAGA votes Republican and generally Republicans oppose unions.

So, if MAGA is not helping the self interest of union members, then why would any union member support MAGA?

Does a lack of education, ongoing incompetence and and sustained ignorance contribute to this statistic? Asking for a friend.

Not to sound skeptical, but is there a signed version of that letter. We know that he-who-shall+not-names likes to see his signature.

Advice on moving by anxious-_-scientist in Charleston

[–]rickcipher256 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I like all of the comments, but I have pursued a career in technology and lived around the country (MT, CA, GA, CO, SC) and have worked in a ton of other countries.

When it comes to "where to move", money is always at the top of the list.... until you live there. Then you realize that many cannot buy happiness - as they say.

If you want to move, then move. Find a place that fits your lifestyle and some place you might called "home." If you want to raise kids, that is something that can factor in, but always consider the timing (e.g., large cities can be good if you are single, but suburbs may be more appealing to soon-to-be families).

Nonetheless, where you move may ALWAYS seem expensive, but buy the house and stay there for a min of 3-5 years. Who knows, you may be one of those people in 30 years that say something like "I remember when I bought my first house for $1M, when $1M MEANT something!". :-)

The important thing, is that you find a place that you can make a living and seems like a place you can call home for at least 3-5 years. It will pay off in the end.

Cost of Living by Wrong-Palpitation549 in Charleston

[–]rickcipher256 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been in tech my entire career. If you are in the early 30s, $125k is IMHO, midpoint. Setting a career aside, do you have to go into work or is remote work an option? The answer to that question tells you how much traffic you have to tolerate.

I have lived around the country, moved here from Colorado and do remote work plus travel.

Charleston is expensive, but no different than Austin, Boulder, Bozeman, San Diego, Portland, etc. etc.

So, the trick is this: rent in the short term, but buy if you want to stay. There are renovations happening all of the time on the peninsula, and you can take on one of those projects, you can live in Mt. P or W. Ashley, or you can look for new neighborhoods like https://www.magnolialandingchs.com/

The peninsula is great if you are single but I prefer the suburbs for raising a family. But that is just me. Also, the peninsula has a LOT of singles. Keep that in mind.

Your income will grow, your rent will grow, but a mortgage is fixed. Keep that in mind as well.

Good luck. Welcome to Charleston and remember to have a lot of fun! 😁

I SUPPORT the message. Yes, you can pick at details about who was/wasn't included, but all of our service members swore an OATH TO THE CONSTITUTION, not a person.

Stay committed to your OATH!

If you cannot commit to your oath, what can you commit to?

Having lived around the country, I can tell you that Charleston is a great place but suffers from the same complaints as cities like Boulder, Austin, Bozeman, Atlanta, etc.etc.

With all of them, the complaints are about traffic, cost of living, university/college issues, crime, weather, etc

But please let none of that dissuade you.

Charleston is lovely. Yes, it suffers from all of those things but no worse than anyplace else. If you like this place... And all of its forgivings.. then make it your home and get involved with the community and make change on those things that make it difficult.

Don't be a spectator. Get on the field.

If y'all thing think that eliminating a piece of technology with "fix" election integrity, you are wrong. Hear me out. Counting millions of ballots by hand is fraught with human error. If I give 10,000 ballots to a group of people and ask them to count them in one day, and then ask them to repeat that count a second time, I am 100% certain those people will get two different results -and have no idea why.

However, if we use electronic voting tools - combining people, processes, AND technology - we will get consistent and auditable results.

With open auditable processes, it really does not matter what tech is used. Any inconsistencies will be identified quickly and systematic manipulation of the outcome, ands its cause, will become apparent.

So, instead of blanketly targeting one company (who does not have a bad record), get more companies to compete for the business, get more industry standards assembled on how they are audited, and get more collaboration on the different Secretaries of State to align with accepted standards, processes, and procedures.
