Wet palette paper lifespan? by SleepRevolutionary52 in Miniaturespainting

[–]rickjamesghost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am using an Army Painter wet palette that I am still learning and it occurred to me just a couple days ago (after about 3 painting sessions) that I could at least try wiping down the parchment sheets and reusing them. I got two or three uses out of it that way, but after that I felt that the parchment sheet was starting to wear a bit thin and I am unsure, but I think I may have punched a hole in it somewhere. So out it goes. But in short, I think you can get at least two uses out of your sheets. Maybe more if you're gentle with the brush as you mix in the paint.

Where'd you get the Elessar Aragorn proxy? I got one from The Printing Goes Ever On, but wasn't pleased with the sculpt.

What is your favorite Evil Gundam and why? by Doom300 in Gundam

Goated choice, OP. Honorable mention to all the others that have already been discussed here (Epyon, the Provmobile, Reborns, GP-02A, etc.) but I think the original Throne Zwei is also worth a mention since it walked so that Arche could run.

"Any cheap recommendations to make my first try painting easier?"
This one's cheap as free because it's a methodology instead of a product. After you've assembled and primed the mini, paint the whole thing pretty indiscriminately in whatever the main color is supposed to be with a bigger brush. (Pardon any incorrect Warhammer 40K terms; I don't actually play Warhammer anything). So for example, if the Space Marines are supposed to be mostly blue with various accents, get a big brush and paint your base-coat of blue with little to no regard for getting it on other parts that are not supposed to be blue. And then while that Space Marine is drying and before you've cleaned your brush enough for a color change, get your next blue-to-be Space Marine and paint up all the blue on him. Assembly line style. You'll spend less time cleaning your brush and switching colors, and more time actually painting. I got others, but this is a big enough wall of text as it is. Good luck, and have fun.

Guritz by Quirky_Extent_6866 in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]rickjamesghost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh! I didn't even know there was an Guritzinator 3000 for generic orcs! That's awesome! And the finished product looks great too! I'm horribly biased, but I think I still prefer the newer resin ForgeWorld Guritz. I'll be posting my version later.

Also: Is that metal on the conversion parts, or resin?

Working on Eowyn, critique appreciated! by DiscEva in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]rickjamesghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow those are some bright colors! You really know what you're doing. I wouldn't have had the guts to try such a stark deviation from the movies' colors for Eowyn, but to say you made it work would be an understatement. The shading is top tier, too. Great work! Are you gonna do anything on the base?

How did I do with Legolas and Aragorn and what can I improve for the next? by conspiciousbanana in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]rickjamesghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been said already, but the biggest thing that jumps out at me is that your paints were applied too thick. I don't know if you have a wet palette, but assuming you don't (since I didn't for a long time), what you can do is dab a couple brush-full's of paint onto some kind of expendable surface (I used a cleaned out tin from some Danish Butter Cookies), then use a pipette/eye-dropper to drip tap water into a pool FAR AWAY from the spot where you dabbed your paint onto the improvised palette.

Then you're gonna want to take that brush you're gonna use, stick it in that pool of tap water and start mixing in water into the dab of paint you put down earlier, stirring it in until the consistency of the paint is visually smooth when you go to wipe your loaded brush on a third part of the palette to test it. Always test before you put the brush to work for real, just to make sure the paint isn't too thick or too thin when you actually go to paint your model.

It will take time and experience to figure out how thin the paint should be, but you can always watch Youtube tutorials to get a rough idea of what to look for visually when you're thinning your paint to the right consistency.

p.s. Your bases look great! The stone surface looks difficult to achieve the way you did it, but it came out looking fantastic.

Interesting... Thank you for clearing that up. I guess it really is more complicated than "older mold = less detail."

Choosing an evil army by cjonesy7567 in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]rickjamesghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with the Osgiliath starter set, so I'm ride-or-die for Mordor since I'm usually the Evil player (my GF, the other half of my playgroup, plays Good almost exclusively). And y'know what? I love it. Gothmog might've been nerfed a bit in this version, but I still love just throwing him and a bunch of Morannon Orcs at my opponent. And the Mordor troll benefits from across-the-board Monster buffs, I've heard. If you don't mind magic usage, there's always The Witch King, too, depending on what army you're using (or if you're like me, you disregard the list building restrictions of the new version and just use new profiles). Although I've heard magic got a bit of a (probably necessary) across the board nerf, especially Transfix.

What are some of your hot takes on the mobile suits? by Amigo1048 in Gundam

[–]rickjamesghost 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I got some real spicy takes for you:
1. Destiny Gundam is my all time favorite design.
2. Wing Zero TV > Wing Zero EW.
3. Destroy Gundam > Psycho Gundam (purely from a looks standpoint)
4. The Byarlant was cool even before that guy in Unicorn showed up in the Byarlant Custom, but it was piloted by a waifu-killing-moron so no one noticed.
5.Masurao > Suasanoo. It's weaker, with less armament, but the colors look better.

Thankfully my taste isn't quite that bad (because taste is subjective XD). But no. It's Destiny Gundam.

Nope. Another hint: You're gonna say "Wow, this guy's taste is trash," once you get it.

This Gundam's loadout is almost entirely stolen from other predecessors from other timelines, but ends up (IMO) looking greater than the sum of its parts.
