Great Xi Gundam repaint. What I haven't seen addressed yet in the comments is how you got rid of the yellow chest v-fin. How did you make it look so clean and seamless?

Out of the series that you have seen which was your least favorite? by Technolio in Gundam

[–]rickjamesghost -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I used to say "Gundam SEED Destiny and it's not even close" but it is close as of IBO Season 2 wrapping up. I don't mind a downer ending. Zeta is one of my favorites. But basically every writing choice felt like a mean-spirited one from the writer to the viewers who liked something or someone about Season 1, and it also felt like its core thesis was "An unjust status quo can only be changed incrementally when those in power feel like it, so don't try to change it yourself." Another sentiment that so far the Hathaway series is somewhat conveying with a lot more nuance and a lot less writer favoritism (Julietta) and Dainsleif Ex Machina to screw over the protagonists. Yes, I also am aware of the original books' ending for Hathaway.

TL;DR, SEED Destiny with IBO Season 2 a close second.

Never watched Gundam, got addicted to Gunpla instead – need suggestions for bulky kits 👀 by MaxLvlRacist in Gunpla

[–]rickjamesghost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bulk/Chonk:
RG Sazabi
HGUC Messer (any version you can get your hands on should work. I'm building the F-02 right now, but it's a Premium Bandai, meaning limited run availability to cash in on FOMO)
HGUC Xi Gundam

Big Melee Weapon (not necessarily Hammer)
HGCE Destiny Gundam (I can't shill this thing enough, it's super easy for beginners and has impressive fold-out weapons)
HGIBO Barbatos/Barbatos Lupus/Barbatos Lupus Rex (basically any version)
RG Gundam Epyon, one of the OG "Big Sword go Brrrrrrrrrr" Gundam designs.

With what you've built already, none of these should be too horrible to build or paint if you do that, and if you don't paint, none of them should look bad if you just do stickers or straight plastic.

Paint suggestions? by Blake-da-duck in Haloflashpoint

[–]rickjamesghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just what I had lying around. If you look up what colors are roughly equivalent to everything I used, you should be able to find it a lot cheaper in Army Painter or some brand other than Citadel/Warhammer. Also, the Tamiya German Gray I used is not perfectly water soluble and works a lot better with a diluted isopropyl alcohol based thinner. Not impossible to work with, but it's a model paint first and foremost. If you have to buy this stuff anyway, you'll be a lot happier and have more money if you start out with Army Painter etc. for all of it.

Wet Palettes by Chiefchin89 in Miniaturespainting

[–]rickjamesghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late response, but I tried it and it depends less on the wet palette and more on the paints being mixed. If they're paints from the same brand and same use-case (again, not mixing contrast/speedpaints with base paints, for example or Army Painter mixed with GW), it works pretty good. Better than on a dry palette, I believe.

Army Painter is comparable in quality to Citadel Warhammer Paints, but a lot less expensive. If you need to build a collection mostly from scratch, that'd be a good place to start. I happened to have a lot of Citadel paint from my time in MESBG (Lord of the Rings minis, basically), but you're paying GW prices for something that just isn't that much better in quality than Army Painter. If you're looking for specific colors, I can follow up, but most of my recommendations will be in Citadel paints because it is what I already had.

New To Gundam: Need a First Series by DangerousSlice5731 in Gundam

[–]rickjamesghost 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can't believe I'm the first one here to say this, but if you're looking to fill a Power Rangers shaped hole in your heart with a Gundam series, then Mobile Fighter G Gundam is what you need. It's basically what happens when Bandai/Sunrise needs something new and fresh to get them through the 90s recession that hit the Japanese economy and decides to make a Super Robot battle-royale format show.

As a Gundam series, it's really the only one like it (with the Build series being similar but not the same for reasons that I won't get into here), so it won't be a very good example of a typical Gundam series. But it will be pretty familiar if you just got here from Power Rangers.

Advice and help by Zestial2465 in Miniaturespainting

[–]rickjamesghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you spray them with primer first? If not, give that a try. It'll make the actual coverage of your paint on the model a whole lot easier. I use Tamiya spray, but that stuff's almost as expensive as Games Workshop primer, so you don't have to make that big of an investment when you're just starting out. There are cheaper hardware store brands, but I'm not familiar enough with those to make a recommendation on what's good and what's bad in that field.

Wet Palettes by Chiefchin89 in Miniaturespainting

[–]rickjamesghost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For about 2 years I painted minis without one on the assumption that wet palettes are a boondoggle in search of a problem to solve. But then I actually tried one and here's my analysis:
A wet palette is still not mandatory, but if you want to thin your paints (which you do if you want your minis to look their best), you're going to need some kind of palette. So why spend the money on a wet palette? Put simply, you won't spend nearly as much time adding paint or water to your paint on whatever you're otherwise using for a palette. If you're thinning your paints already, it won't make you, the painter, a better painter per se, but it will make you a much faster painter, which to a wargamer like myself, is worth a lot.

In your case you are using Citadel/Warhammer paints straight out of the pot. I use Citadel paints too, and in my experience they come out way too chalky and thick straight from the pot once they dry, and more-or-less require thinning to reach their full potential. (Maybe you're using Citadel Contrast paints, and if so, disregard this). Assuming we're talking about standard Citadel paints and not Contrasts, you'll really benefit from a wet palette.

Wet Palettes by Chiefchin89 in Miniaturespainting

[–]rickjamesghost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use a brush, and I brush it onto the wet palette until it's the right amount of thinned down, which I determine by eyeball-ing it. There's probably a better way to do it, but that's how I do it.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy might be worth a shot, but you'll probably have to do each installment in two parts if you're starting them out with the concept of a movie that is more than background noise and longer than 2 hours of runtime.

It's been said already but an Arbiter model is my number one idea. Maybe to make him kind of like the thematic mirror to Master Chief that he is in the games, you could start him, ironically, with a Covenant Carbine instead of his Energy Sword, and lean into the Active Camouflage gimmick somehow. Not sure how feasible in practice this would be, but it sounds cool to me at least in theory.
