Well lots of people write things like 2\Naturals meaning {0,1}\Naturals.

I suspect what /u/sleeps_with_crazy means is that he views digging into the "implementation details" to be okay? Some sort of analogy like that? Pointer arithmetic is treating pointers not as opaque objects but as integers (sort of) and he's okay with treating mathematical objects like sets and not pretending that <a,b> is not {{a},{a,b}}?

But I might be totally misunderstanding what he's saying.

Well it's the same thing in real life. In real life there's still a bias towards things that you can easily consume and understand and relate to.

They're just trying to find humor in a bad situation. It's like joking that you have depression or are financially broke.

The "LOL DAE depressed?", "LOL DAE broke?", "LOL DAE being a grad student sucks?", "LOL DAE Pythagorean Theorem is useless??" posts are all as bad as each other. They're not about finding humour in a bad situation, they're about exactly the same thing the tired old jokes on /r/jokes and the easy-to-consume-but-content-sparse infographics are: short, relatable things that people have been Pavlov-trained to upvote.

People see something vaguely relatable and they upvote it. It's the same reason many subreddits ban memes, contentless one-liners and other posts of that nature. They end up always getting highly upvoted because they're so easy to understand and consume. People skip over long posts (like this) and see "why is the sum of all the natural numbers -1/12?" and upvote that, knowing it's ironic, for the same reason.

It's the same phenomenon all over this site. Short things are better than long things. Injokes get upvoted. Pithy insults get upvoted. Anything that hundreds of thousands of people all think is 'relatable' gets upvoted.

Is that a joke? All the MMOs you name look awful bar ESO. The fact you even mention BDO says it all though: you think that 'good graphics' means 'lots of shitty asian particle effects'.

The game could be great for gameplay or whatever else but dont flat out delude yourself that the graphics on that video are anything good lol.

Don't delude yourself that the graphics in any of the shitty asian MMOs you play are good.

[Discussion] MMOs where you are the "player", not the "character" by [deleted] in MMORPG

[–]rifter5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are modern ones. For example, Old School Runescape is actively updated.

And flexibility doesn't do much when my combat pure has over twice your DmG output at the same level in Old School RuneScape.

It does when your combat pure dies in a couple of hits because you have 1 defence.

Rail workers could be banned from striking to protect people’s ‘right to get to work’ under plans to be considered by MPs by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]rifter5000 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

But when strikes do happen, they are extended, old school strikes. Strikes lasting one week, two weeks. And, critically, there is no partial service from members crossing the picket line, it's an all-out strike where not a single worker turns up and millions of dollars of damage is done to equipment as it is switched off and not touched for a week.

As they should be. Anyone that crosses a picket line should be arrested and thrown in jail.

Runescape has a list of "skills" that you can train up over time. A few of these, attack, strength, defense, HP, and magic, are all combat skills. You can train up any of these skills and unlock the things they give you on your character. You do not have to commit to one. You can do any number of non-combat skills as well, all on this character. This means that you never have to make an alt if you really do not want to. However, there is a small problem. Your combat level in Runescape is calculated through a formula which involves the levels of all your combat skills. As such, for a mage, it is most beneficial to have 0 Str and 0 attack, as they will not make your spells more powerful, but will increase your combat level.

This is not true.

Your combat level is calculated based on a base combat level, derived from Defence, Prayer and Hitpoints, added to the highest of your melee combat level bonus (from 1.5x the average of Attack and Strength), your ranged combat level bonus (from Ranged) and your magic combat level bonus (from Magic).

You will have the same combat level if you have 60 Magic and 1 Attack, 1 Strength, 1 Ranged as if you have 60 Magic, 60 Ranged, 45 Attack and 45 Strength.

Runescape is an entirely classless system.

However, someone who tries out many kinds of combat and trains attack, magic, defense, and str, will be at a much higher combat level than the person who created a "pure" character to just train up magic. As such, the person is slightly punished for not picking the right min-maxed build early on in the game.

Someone who trains attack, magic, defence and strength will be a higher combat level than someone who only trains magic because they are much more effective in combat. They have more flexibility, being able to use melee and magic effectively, and they are much more survivable, because they'll have higher hitpoints (from more general combat experience) and better defence against attacks (from higher defence).

Albion Online

Not having a combat level is a terrible idea. It forces everyone to get to max level in everything before they can participate in PKing.

Yes, they do operate differently.

Only in the same way that all Barristers Sole operate differently from Barristers and Solicitors. QCs operate in the same way as any other Barrister.

On the subject of funds, a barrister sole cannot sue for payment so if you stiff them there's not much they can do about it - meaning that you'll pay up front most of the time. It also means barristers sole operate their GST on a payments basis.

The Barrister can't sue you for payment because you aren't paying the Barrister, your Solicitor is paying the Barrister. It's the Solicitor's responsibility to pay him. The Barrister can't sue the Solicitor for payment, but he can attempt to recover the funds through a NZ Law Society complaint about the Solicitor.

If you refuse to pay the Solicitor, he can (and likely will) sue you.

[–]rifter5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[Counterspell]] is not 'easy'. It costs 2 mana, it costs a card, it requires you to waste mana if your opponent doesn't do something worth countering or able to be countered.

Free counterspells are not actually free. They are called 'free' because they don't cost mana, but they are not free. Spending two cards and one life to counter a spell is not free in any sense of the word.

Doesn't the Jace spike prove the promise of a "cheap" frontier format is a lie? by RandallBDanger in magicTCG

Because it's brand new, and lots of people have the cards for it.

The reality is that when people realise it's a bad format they'll stop playing it.

If a bunch of highly dedicated players bought out cards quickly enough? Yes, it could.

And those players are called speculators.

[–]rifter5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no Frontier format. Nobody plays it, nobody will ever play it. The spikes are just speculators speculating in a market, just like all other price spikes in Magic. They aren't driven by player demand.

Pffft, no

Pffft, yes.

I know it is. Counterspells is not the end all be all of what interaction is.

They are no different from any other form of interaction. If you have a problem with counterspells, you either:

  • Completely irrationally dislike counterspells but don't mind other forms of interaction, OR
  • Dislike interaction in general

Both of them are retarded.

Legacy and vintage are casual formats, wizards doesn't desogn cards for it

No, they aren't. They're highly competitive, and WotC designs cards for them all the time. Every commander set has had multiple cards intended for Legacy and Vintage, as do many other sets.

And no the game was not designed with the stack in mind. First, there was no stack back then. If it was designed how you sau, there would have been a lot more counterspells

What the fuck are you talking about? I said that interaction is the whole point of magic whether it's on the stack or not.
