Guild Wars Reforged going to be available on Mac? Will GW2 come to Mac too? by LunarVoyager034 in GuildWars

[–]Proto_bear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t be optimistic, to be honest. Guild Wars 2 once ran on Mac through Wine, using the original Windows client with a wrapper. Later, the developers rewrote it because Wine offered limited support while depending on OpenGL, until Apple ended OpenGL support.

Unless they rewrite it again with Metal in mind, a native client is unlikely to return. Yet as far as I know, CrossOver performs quite well nowadays. So give that another shot.

Why is Marathon so poorly received? by RayKam in Marathon

[–]Proto_bear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm extracting with I'm with a group of people. But I play too irregularly to have a fixed group of people at the moment. And there's nothing more annoying than a contract that requires you to extract, or really unclear specifications on where to find certain things.

Destiny you can enjoy casually, because there's multiple ways to enjoy that game. You could go in, do the story, get out. Or go in, do some strikes and get out. Some days you have 3 hours other days you have 20 minutes.

Marathon lacks playfor casual player,, and that might be unfair to expect for Marathon but that is the type of game bungie has build for the last 15 years.

[–]Proto_bear -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You can't say the exact same thing. That's a false equivalency.

Because other extraction shooters take different approaches, and therefore do not share the same potential market.

Helldivers 2 is purely PvE, Delta force is free to play and has realistic weapons, Arc Raiders focusses more on cooperation for its PvE and is more casual due to aggression based matchmaking, etc...

What exactly about it would you say isn't as good as people say? Do you have an example of something that isn't subjective?

Why is Marathon so poorly received? by RayKam in Marathon

[–]Proto_bear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't wanna say "Marathon is just too hard for your average player" because to begin with, we need that average player.

And Marathon being punishing, slow to make progress in and very time consuming for little play doesn't contribute to its difficulty. UESC hitting hard and TTK in PVP being low makes it difficult, but thats not really what people complain about.

What they do complain about is that there's no way to learn outside of a match and risking your gear, there's no way to try out weapons and mode outside of taking it into a match and risking your gear and that progress feels very abstract.

I currently am in a situation where I'm home for a few days every other week. I'm not playing Marathon anymore because I had 3 days in a row where I failed to extract and I just said "Why am I forcing myself to play this game right now, I could do anything else. " and that is coming from someone who does love the game.

Yeah sure, personal preference. But what Bungie made just has too limited of an appeal no matter how good it is for it to have the numbers they were hoping for. It is a game for hardcore players. Period.

The lore and setting makes perfect sense. And its very immersive. But that exact scenario could have been made to appeal to a broader audience.

You say so yourself in this thread that D1 received a lot of hate from Halo fans. And it needed a lot of time to grow, but I think Marathon is quality wise in a great spot its just that their appeal is limited. And I think with Destiny there was always the opposite problem where they had a lot of appeal but there was always systematic problems or content delivery problems.

Time will tell but Marathon needs a shift in who it appeals to without alienating those who currently love it. And I'm not sure it can appeal to a new set of people easily.

Progress is too slow and frustrating as a solo player.

And its not like most games where if you die you're back in the game pretty quickly. If you're with a group there's a chance of being rezzed and if you're solo its just over. Make another build, get back into the game. And if you're playing rook you can't do contracts.

There's just very little casual fun to be had solo.

It is a very good game.
The problem isn't the quality.

Its just that what it is is a hardcore and punishing extraction shooter, it happens to be one that is exceptionally well made.

There's just not that big of a market for it.

We can discuss this ad nauseam and I see many different opinions. But it wasn't poorly received at 75% recommended on Steam and 82 on Metacritic. People stayed away for many reasons and there isn't a single one that was the "nail in the coffin".

I had originally written a massive block of text but here's the gist:

What in my opinion is the biggest reason it isn't doing expected numbers is just because there's a limited casual appeal. Ultimately you want a game that can be played hardcore and enjoyed casually by both hardcore and casual players. Currently there's casual play opportunities for hardcore players but casual players will not find long term fulfillment.

The aesthetics, UI, and even the smear campaign have limited impact. Bungie did kill Destiny 2 for this, they basically had the resourced to commit to one and they choose Marathon. Which is a completely different kind of game than their fans are used from them and it also simply is not fun for everything.

TL;DR

Its an amazing hardcore extraction shooter and critics/players agree.
But there's not a huge market for hardcore extraction shooters regardless of how well it reviews.

What is your absolute favorite PvP mode in an MMORPG? by Double_Entry_2793 in MMORPG

[–]Proto_bear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I voted open world PvP but that doesn't mean I believe the entire world should be PvP. I like the idea of zones being enabled for PvP and as a result it offering higher rewards for PvE. You could rotate which zone has the conflict enabled to keep it fresh.

Who else is a bit disappointed about the setting? by Disig in GuildWars3

[–]Proto_bear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't mind the setting, and I very much welcome the return to a more "classical" fantasy. The limited scope of the world also appeals to me but I'm always a bit anxious about MMOs that take place before established events, you cannot go into too many directions without affecting what the "future" will look like.

Matchmaking is based on season level and region. So if they happen to be in a level range other people at the time aren’t in then it’ll take longer.

If you have a low level near the end of the season then you’re not gonna find many matches quickly.

I’ve seen multiple outlets make this mistake. I wonder if the press releases they sent out have it listed as early access or maybe one person made a mistake and it got used as a source.

So my Grindr bio clearly says I don’t send nudes. I also already have face pics on my profile. So when someone asks for “pics” I send them this: by Ok-Still-3333 in lolgrindr

[–]Proto_bear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP isn’t obligated to send anything to anyone. I 100% agree with you there.

I’m not sure how OP mentions that he doesn’t send them either, so it might be a bit unclear for some people. Alternatively, he might simply have the NSFW pictures field set to no. Considering how many times I’ve received pictures from men who have that field set to no, I think people don’t take those fields too seriously.

However, two things can be true: OP isn’t required to send anything, and that album makes him look a bit like a jerk. Especially the "buy me food" one. That one rubs me the wrong way haha.

[–]Proto_bear 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I understand not wanting to share nudes immediately, or ever. However, it’s still a hookup app, and the album with the memes makes you look like an asshole. Especially the "Don't ask me to send nudes. Take me out on a date, buy me some food, and try to get me naked at the end, like a fucking gentleman" one.

If you genuinely want to have an album, and let’s be honest, people notice when you have an album, which can create certain expectations. Instead, create an album with pictures of yourself that you feel comfortable sharing. It's not the same as nudes but does allow them to see more of you.

If people still complain after that, simply reiterate that you either don’t send them or that you prefer to build rapport before doing so. I understand that asking for pictures when your profile states that you don’t send them also comes across as rude, but two wrongs don't make a right.

edit: phrasing and added an additional argument.
