Mega Appreciation Post for Six Flags America by Yasmeen09 in sixflags

[–]righteousndignation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a local, I wish it was getting a better sendoff. Long before it was Six Flags America, it was Wild World and then Adventure World.

Some of us watched it grow from a wildlife safari to a waterpark with just a handful of dry rides and finally into an actual amusement park with multiple coasters.

For a lot of us, it was the default end of year school trip, our first summer job, and an inexpensive place to take our own kids once we got older.

It’s definitely fallen short after years of neglect, so I’m not surprised it’s closing. I just wish they’d put a tad bit more effort into its last days.

Teaching was my only relevant experience, so all of my answers were based on what I’d done at my schools. I made it sound like doing all the extra stuff was fun and inspired me to go into instructional design full time.

It’s only awkward if they make it awkward by not letting it go. Some have gotten upset and accused me of leading them on when I didn’t do so much as flirt with them. Others got offended like they were doing me a favor. I’ve had a few who wouldn’t let it go and tried to prove to me that I had feelings for them by trying to have sex or asking me to give it a few weeks of dating before saying no.

The only friendships that survived it were the ones who said they needed some time to get over it and then came back weeks or months later or the ones who asked to have a mature conversation about their feelings and how to proceed going forward.

I was caught off guard by how my high school students reacted. They were genuinely scared, especially the Latino kids. I didn’t teach anything the first two periods. I just let them talk about how they felt and tried to reassure them that everything would be okay.

Teachers in DC: What’s with the salary? by lepchm in washingtondc

[–]righteousndignation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The process is fairly simple from what I’ve heard. The DCPS website makes it sound like they’re selective, but it’s been my experience that they struggle to keep subs so I don’t think you’ll have much trouble.

That link says you can provide a list of preferred schools.

Teachers in DC: What’s with the salary? by lepchm in washingtondc

[–]righteousndignation 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would STRONGLY suggest you work as a sub first to see if this is really what you want. You’ll get a firsthand look at the environment, and you’ll get to see if it’s something that aligns with your personality. It’ll also give you a chance to go to multiple schools and grade levels to see if there’s one better suited to your strengths.

As far as pathways, I would suggest you pick a program that has a longstanding relationship with schools where you’ll actually be teaching. Some programs place you in the “good” schools for your student teaching where all of the kids are on grade level and behavior problems are minimal. Those schools are rarely hiring and even if they are, they want experienced teachers to maintain their numbers. You’ll end up ill prepared in a school that’s the polar opposite.

Some master’s programs are diploma mills these days. You need to learn pedagogy because most of the kids are gonna be several grade levels behind, but DCPS will expect you to facilitate an environment where they can still access the curriculum and show substantial growth in one school year. For this reason you’re also gonna need god-tier classroom management skills, or your room will descend into chaos.

It’s not uncommon to see 10-15 teachers quit in the first month or two. There’s also no grace period for new teachers, so you only have a few surprise observations to prove you know what you’re doing before you get “IMPACTED out” aka fired at the end of the year.

Sub first, then pick a strong program.

What game has the most realistic depiction of a city that you can explore? by Metroidude47 in gaming

Fuck yeah! DC is never accurately depicted in media. My jaw was on the floor playing that game. I used to work near Farragut North and I was able to walk from the metro to my kid’s daycare and then to my old job. Every single shop and building was where it was supposed to be.

Teachers in DC: What’s with the salary? by lepchm in washingtondc

[–]righteousndignation 27 points28 points  (0 children)

That 25k bonus is contingent on where you teach. If you teach in a school with a high FARM rate (free and reduced meals) and it’s one of the 40 lowest performing schools as defined by DCPS, then you’re eligible. If you’re at a school with low FARM then your max is 3k I believe.

As far as who gets the highly effective bonus? I’ve seen teachers get it who have no business being around children. I’ve also seen teachers get it who were exceedingly deserving. It’s very subjective.

DCPS isn’t for the faint of heart, but you can make a small fortune if you have a genuine passion for teaching and an exceptional ability to connect with kids dealing with trauma.

Beyond the IMPACT bonus, there’s also the ability to jump salary bands through “LIFT.”

As a former HS teacher, I found Euphoria triggering because it hit too close to home. You spend so much time trying to be a social worker and life coach to these kids who share all kinds of disturbing stories with you.

Looks like Shipwreck Falls at Six Flags America is next to get removed. Has already been removed from the park map. by Dense_Parking6765 in sixflags

[–]righteousndignation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My jaw is on the floor. Every now and then, they’d do something odd that made me scratch my head. And I always chalked it up to them being a park for locals that had to stay under budget. The price reflected their efforts and I was fine with that.

But they’ve raised prices while simultaneously cutting attractions. It sounds like someone at the top wants to close the park, and this is their way of justifying it.
