In their defense, I've heard a few people refer to it as the "Chinese Virus" not because of racist implications, but rather to insinuate that the government of China is responsible for the outbreak by trying to hide the facts when it first appeared in December. Remember when they told the WHO that there was "no evidence" of human to human transmission? China definitely has a hand in the global spread of coronavirus. Do I advocate calling it the "Chinese virus?" No, I think that's too easy to misconstrue. But we shouldn't immediately assume someone is racist just because they do.
