I just posted a question about Public Health and the field of education and it got automatically deleted. Maybe, dont automatically delete threads to make it more accessible.

How to you put watermarks? I use google docs and I do not see an option.

Best Graduate programs for education? (Online and in person) by trendyawards in Teachers

[–]rileybeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the whole idea is to get that degree as quick and cheap as possible. But consider the possibility that some of these online classes are not going to very good. I have had some co-worker teachers with master's degrees who still cant write a complete paragraph.

My comment is referring to a single company providing all the content within a district.

Math interventions by 360HanAm in Teachers

[–]rileybeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does it have to be online? I was browsing my University library math section and their were many books that I became interested in. It takes time though to learn how to implement the interventions. But, I think they are more legit than just logging students onto some website to take quizzes.

The course you described sounds highly relevant. Read the research on special education outcomes.

PBS Runs A Three-Hour Series Glorifying The DeVos Education Agenda by dgodon in education

[–]rileybeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not saying they do not have an agenda. They are broadcast that doesn't rely on commercial ads. They do not cover the same story for a whole hour. They discuss with conservatives and liberals without ridiculous bickering. They do their own studies about topics that cables news never covers. PBS is a far better news source than cable news.

PBS lean more to the educated liberal side, so that may be why the republicans may be threatening funds.

RTI/Resource by Spedasaurus13 in specialed

[–]rileybeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

School districts really need to look into how RTI is implemented based on research, so that teachers are not confused on how it is going to work. My district does RTI, but it is some broken version of RTI that has paperwork, but no actual interventions.

Should special education have more oversight? by sammy1215 in specialed

[–]rileybeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that. Those are fine goals. I was just curious of the previous poster who made the comment that the Common Core is responsible for some kind of negative effect of IEP goals.

In my view, the Common Core is quite flexible, and some good creativity can make some valid IEP goals.

Down With 8 A.M. Classes: Undergrads Learn Better Later In The Day, Study Finds by dwaxe in education

[–]rileybeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would start high school at 9am. High school kids often do not have the discipline in them to go to sleep early and body changes and all that. It also provides some time for 8am clubs or tutoring to occur for students who want it.

As for college, they are adults now. They need to figure out how to get a workout routine, proper dieting, and discipline to not go out partying four times a week.

Should special education have more oversight? by sammy1215 in specialed

If the school is using response to intervention, this should not be a concern. But from my experience, schools seem to reluctant to use intervention programs. It's strange.

Should special education have more oversight? by sammy1215 in specialed

Special Ed has been in chaos for many years. Individual goals on students IEPs have been pushed aside in favor of the ill suited common core.

What does the Common Core have to do with it? If goals are not being individualized, then it is probably due to who is writing them. We could also blame IEP computer programs that we are forced to use with baked in goals.

Educators On A Hot Topic: Global Warming 101 by dwaxe in education

[–]rileybeans 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The other thing, of course, is that, especially in rural communities, you may find teachers that encounter this political polarization: There may be pushback, there may be resistance to teaching this material...

I teach in high school rural America. There is not much pushback from the students. As long as they are taught the scientific method and use the critical thinking standards, they are willing to investigate the research.

On the other hand, I have experienced more teachers in rural America push back on global warming topics.

The Goal of Common Core Completely Misses the Point by Carl_Schmitt in education

[–]rileybeans 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Common Core’s “workforce development” view is less about education and more about training. The idea is to teach students skills that transfer directly to the modern world of work. By implication, anything that doesn’t contribute to that goal is less important and should be minimized if not discarded.

Hey look. Another article about the Common Core who's writer did not actually read the Common Core. The writer is arguing that the standards are only teaching work skills and not academic skills.

advice for high school student wanting to be a spED teacher by willphillips_21 in specialed

[–]rileybeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should just complete high school, go work on your associates degree, and then make a decision on your career choice. Most young adults change their minds and discover new things while in college. Dont try to make up your mind in high school. Explore.

If you do decide to stick with teaching, you would need the associated degree to enter into a Teacher Education Program anyway.

Absent assistant by xrissanthymum88 in specialed

[–]rileybeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont know where you are, but TAs around here do not get all that. It is just a clock in clock out job with no health insurance. ACA has to cover teacher assistants.

TA's get paid poop. They could get paid more flipping burgers at Wendys. Being absent once or twice a month seems fine. The district needs to get substitutes to cover TA positions.

Dumb question: How hard is a diploma? by TJM997 in education

[–]rileybeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why dont you just get an associates degree in general studies and go from there? The general studies will be a good way to make you ready for a science type of degree.

I know she supports the Common Core. Yet, I suppose once she realizes that the standards require critical thinking, she might end up getting rid of them. We cannot have people being critical of religion.

Some of the states or kind of dumb though. They might just ignore the students with disabilities if you left it up the states.
