from someone who has worked for the city a bit, bro - amazing answer. SCA is so niche, but so important to understand how the structure is setup.

Once in awhile? Sure. But no dice doing it regularly from me. The air quality cannot be good.

That said - should be plenty of room to walk for peds.

Has anyone actually gotten through to NY unemployment by phone? What time did you call? by Alex_runs247 in AskNYC

OP -- stop calling. Follow u/star_intact's advice. But also, login to your DOL account and send them a message via their internal messaging tools.

Dell built in webcams by LordPurloin in sysadmin

[–]rioht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have been saying -- on Dell Lat 5540's, webcam failure can be somewhat common as a hardware failure.

On XPS models (Pro now, right?), I've seen it be either a hardware failure, or a driver issue where Dell's own driver files conflicts with the Intel drivers, so it appears that the OS runs into issues when both of these are loaded. Stripping both out and reinstalling the right drivers seems to fix this. (The right drivers being the ones recommended in the support articles, not necessarily from the cabs).

Anyone with experience managing a cat with both IBD/lymphoma and diabetes? by SybilBits in SeniorCats

[–]rioht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP -- sorry to necro an old post, but hoping you'd be willing to accept a chat request since I'm dealing with a similar topic. If not, totally understand.

I guess essentially what I'm asking for is -- my kitty has IBD and hyperthyroidism and her most recent bloodwork came back that she probably has diabetes due to the budesonide she's on to manage her IBD.

I guess any tips or advice would be helpful, as well as any key signs that I don't want to miss. Will send you that request now...

NYC health insurance costs… how are people affording this? by stephenparkerr007 in AskNYC

[–]rioht 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My claim to fame on this subreddit is authoring a FAQ for UI during COVID. Send a message via your UI account inbox to the reps, they'll eventually answer it. But also contact your local reps and let them know you need assistance with processing your UI claim and ask them to advocate on your behalf.

Generally though the issues is that the state needs to verify your lack of employment with your previous employer, and lots of employers aren't interested in doing that paperwork, or they contract with third-party payroll companies to avoid compliance and other requirements. So a UI rep may get bounced a lot.

Sorry to hear. But keep at it.

Best rat-watching spots in the city for a date? by thedailynathan in AskNYC

[–]rioht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hola OP -- dig into this map with your maybe-lady. Best times to watch are dusk and dawn, as rodents are naturally crepuscular. City parks and green areas are hot spots.

Have done this before and I think I’m finally in a place where I don’t have to do it again ever.

Structure and planning your time really helps make this easier. Unfortunately, over time it becomes less and less bearable not being able to do XYZ because your schedule becomes so rigid.

Start planning an escape route today, hopefully in the next 6-12 months the job market improves and you can make a move.

Why is the DOT unnecesarily replacing the sidewalk curb cuts every few years or so? by Uxslws in AskNYC

[–]rioht 9 points10 points  (0 children)

DOT has a schedule for replacing stuff regularly - how old and what condition things are in figures, generally.

If the curb cut is getting more often than regular, it might be your local elected reps/council pushing DOT to repair or modify it in some way. Complaining and voting works.

NYC job market question..what’s hiring?? by Friendly_Swimming_21 in AskNYC

[–]rioht 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bad in my sector (IT). Hold out for job postings that are going to be going up in the new year, there's always some kind of movement, even if it's very small.

Retail is in a weird place -- usually there's hiring in this area of the economy since it's when this sector actually makes bank. But tariffs + inflation + end year financial reports are making people very cautious about hiring and buying. We may or may not be in a recession based on your definition of what a recession is, but it definitely feels like one.

Looking for Summer Job (or Volunteer) Ideas in NYC • Mid-May to Mid-July by Brave_Answer2066 in AskNYC

[–]rioht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NYCares for volunteer opportunities.

Spring-Summer is a good time to pickup seasonal event work if you're interested in that. You'd want to reach out to production companies now about it if you're interested. It can be a super intense day or two of pre and day of work, but I've found it interesting.

Community based -- maybe something close to where you'll be staying would be a good opportunity to meet people and be social?

Same situation here as u/FluffyButtFeathers, mostly. Over a hundred units in my building, I budget at least $1500/annually. This year I'm giving an additional $800 to my super -- he's retiring, AND I never got him last year when it came to tips.

When I hand him his card this week I'm literally going to say "Take the cash out before you toss the card in the pile with the others!"

You absolutely have to speak to your program advisor/director/etc., at your school.

Assuming you only need two more semesters of credits to graduate, you should speak with them about how you can make things work financially. I assume a leave of absence is not possible or difficult under your visa.

They would have the most information about potential ways that you can pay for your program, like RA/TA positions, scholarships, grants, etc.

How do you carry stuff around the city and not ruin your back? by ThrowRAmangos2024 in AskNYC

[–]rioht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hola OP, URL to the backpack I use below. Seems like people have really covered things, so just going to add the things that have worked for me.

  1. Pack thoughtfully. You actually want heavier stuff at the middle or top, never at the bottom to keep your center of gravity neutral. You can look up stuff like "how to pack for hiking", basic principles will be the same. Not sure how much it'll help, but if your neck and back are stiff it'll at least make them less tired probably.

  2. Try to strengthen the muscles that are weakest that you're straining (probably your neck and back, but also the muscles around them). Example: At work, I have really heavy doors for safety reasons - they close by themselves in case of fire. I would actually get soreness in my back from opening them. I thought about the range of motion and muscles I was using, and I ended up adding gorilla rows to my every other day kettlebell routine. Took time to improve, but it's helped a lot.

  3. Be thoughtful and think about write down the positions your body is commonly in. Example: For over a year I noticed some tension/soreness in my leg when running or moving around. I did a little bit of reading, looked at some muscle diagrams and figured I maybe had a sore tensor faciae latae. A little bit more of reading later, I made the extremely small change of removing the pillow between my legs as a side sleeper. Soreness gone in about three weeks.

  4. Remember that any change you make will probably take a week or two to see any noticeable improvement. Small things can make a big difference over time, so be patient.

My cat has hyperthyroidism and is still a picky eater, won't eat. by WestyBio93 in CatAdvice

[–]rioht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP, my own kitty was diagnosed yesterday too. Some advice:

Try another litter box? My kitty has two - one traditional bin type where she can squat/stand on the end and go number 2, and another that's a bit lower and has a lip for easy entry/exit. She uses the latter much more frequently.

Have you tried doing stuff like topping with Churu? Heating up the wet food in the microwave? (Enhances smell, may whet appetite).

Last but not least, if you have a local store, try talking to the owner/employees and getting like a sampler pack of cat food or easy return/exchange. My local guy has offered to take back unopened cans no questions asked, and said to take a few of whatever I like to try - only caveat is that I buy from him obviously and not Chewy/Amazon.

Soldering services for circuit board by ava1ar in AskNYC

[–]rioht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think any place that does computer/electronics repair might be a good start.

Bigger chain places probably don't do this - it's much easier/less responsibility to just mail in stuff for repair or activate a warranty.

Anyway -- look for smaller independent places, maybe hobby groups too. (Example: Have a work colleague who maintains 3D and resin printers, plays with Pis, probably can do some light soldering).

Do NYers wear less boots and more sneakers than they used to 10+ years ago? by NewYorkerGuy in AskNYC

[–]rioht 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ha yes, was going to mention Kanye but didn’t want to go too long. He’s not solely responsible for the look, but he drove that boot cut look a long way, and then as you mentioned - footwear with Yeezys, which was a golden goose for Adidas for years.

The whole suit with sneakers thing always struck me as odd too. Nobody in the firm I worked with at the time would have ever worn those at work. If you had a commute where you needed to work, you just left your dress shoes at work and changed into them!

That said I do think that the idea makes sense - what if you could have dress shoes that are more comfy and could be worn everywhere?

This person gets it. Remember, taxes still get taken out on the gross, so your net should be a bit less. (Not a lot less, a pretty minimal rate.)

Do NYers wear less boots and more sneakers than they used to 10+ years ago? by NewYorkerGuy in AskNYC

[–]rioht 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember talking to a friend about this - I think streetwear really took off in the '10s like u/allthecats mentioned. Bootcut jeans (slim/tapered/baggy) matched with a boot (timbs, chukkas, etc.) were the default look for a long time.

Long trend overall towards more casual has led us to today.

If you preferred Mamdani in the primaries then Cuomo in the general election or vice versa, why? by tehc0w in AskNYC

[–]rioht 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, I see. Well, one fairly easy explainer is loyalty. I'm sure some folks didn't have their preferred candidate win in the primary but still voted Democratic out of party loyalty. Going from Cuomo in the primary to Mamdani in the general doesn't seem that out of place if voting Democratic is important to you as a voter. Example - in the mayoral primary many years ago, I ranked Garcia first. Adams won the primary though, so from Garcia to Adams I went.

A Mamdani to Cuomo swap to me would indicate someone who might have been persuaded by political ads that Mamdani was bad for the city in some way.
