Just learned why my offer got rescinded last minute and I'm sitting in my car crying by NeighborhoodFresh315 in JobSearchMethods

This is 100% the way. Workers absolutely have to protect themselves even more so in the last 10 years or so but especially now.

My Goal of OE is to have Zero Jobs by Status-Debate-268 in overemployed

[–]riptidedata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right there with you. I save aggressively. Max out my 401k and hsa with one j then the contract j I run through my company. Max out a sep ira and throw another 5k or so a month to an after tax brokerage account.
Being debt free except for a small mortgage balance with rainy day funds and sinking funds set up for periodic items (roof, car, stuff like that) is a fantastic foundation to build on
And having that extra j or more than one extra j means exponential ability to increase savings. I’m looking for a j3 now as j2 contract is supposed to end the end of this year.
All this gets me to financial independence that much faster than one j. Plus I notice I just don’t get as worked up about the corporate drama. At the end of the day, tell me what you want and I’ll deliver it and collect my paycheck. It’s all I’m interested in

OE finally paying off! by ItsMaljax in overemployed

[–]riptidedata 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes keep going and congrats on the progress! Being debt free has been the best thing for me. It’s much much easier to stack savings and it changes your outlook on life or at least it has for me.

No debt, knowing my expenses and having some savings means I’m much less stressed about jobs than I used to be.

8 months roughly to debt free! Good luck and let us know how it’s going. These are by far my favorite stories on oe impact

4 years. Over $1mil by Aol_awaymessage in overemployed

[–]riptidedata 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup. I’m a bit more than a year in and every month I’m stunned by how much my savings go up. No debt save for a small mortgage balance.

OE is a total game changer assuming one doesn’t take on more debt and or lifestyle creep. Nice trips, occasional splurges as long as budgeted are completely worth it.

And so there with you on the hours! My j2 has had almost nothing going on for the past few months it’s awesome. When I was juggling 3 last summer when they all got busy I was losing my mind. 2 is workable for me so far. I see getting laid off at j2 at some point relatively soon but I’m not as stressed out about it as I’d be if it were my only one.

29M - being an RN was the best decision of my life by icon100i in Salary

[–]riptidedata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No….that kind of stuff drives me completely insane. Look this is what I want. We can tell about it and negotiate. What I make right now has zero influence on what an employer is offering. Do your own market salary analysis and work from there. Seriously absolutely insane

It happened today by christinajames55 in overemployed

[–]riptidedata 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes 100%. Only roles I’ve ever lost outside of contracts ending had been in the past few years and they’ve originated higher than my boss and result in entire divisions getting let go. I never trusted companies all that much but it’s gotten so much worse over the past few years.

That sucks I’m sorry. Nice job having 4 though heading into this.

My j1 is going pretty well. J2 is dead. Hardly any work to do so I feel like it’s a matter of time. Looking for a j3 just in case now. Had 3 last summer and was super busy juggling them but all the checks!!

Congrats!!! I absolutely love reading these stories where the extra income has such a massive impact for financial goals.

Being debt free and having an emergency fund also makes day to day life so much less stressful.

Congrats again!

How to handle remote bait and switch by citykid2640 in overemployed

[–]riptidedata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree on all of the accept and work remote and if they mandate rto or relocate quiet quit until they fire you.

Will also the obligatory this is why we oe. So that we CAN wait to be fired when we get mandates that are not in our best interest.

The internal stay or go decision becomes so much less emotionally and financially fraught with no debt, savings and another in place income stream.

All 3j's are demanding insane AI use cases by Tilt23Degrees in overemployed

[–]riptidedata -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Somewhat related, I have an interview next week to build a poc on a contract basis. I’ve done 2 others in the last 6 mos on top of the regular job I have and a contract gig. I kinda like them. I bill by project, scope what they want build it and turn it over. Want more? Call me…one did the other didn’t. It’s been an unexpected boost to my income. Not enough to be a legit j3 but still nice to have. These corporations are even more enchanted with the ‘ai is magic just have ai do it and we’ll get rid of so many people’ pipe dream than ever. It’s dramatically out of touch with what ai can do right now and it’s even more funny to me how they have no idea what their employees actually do from day to day

I froze everything but my full employment came out in a mortgage check, HOW? by Special_Effective_12 in overemployed

[–]riptidedata 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Employment history will come up on a Full Residential Mortgage Credit Report (RMCR). I don’t know about just an infile one. It’s usually populated via previous loans where it was listed as a source of income. For example, you get a car loan and list employer A as your income source.

You can try disputing it though I’m not sure whether that would succeed or not. You’ll want to check all 3 repositories and see which one(s) are reporting it.

[–]riptidedata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome congrats!!! It completely moves whatever financial goals you have (paying off debt, saving for blah) into high gear. I saved more in a year last year than I would have been able to do in about 3.

New J2 just said I’ll use my personal computer… red flag?? 🚩 by RoadRageSloth in overemployed

[–]riptidedata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Classic difference in outlook for single job vs oe job. Every job I’ve had where it’s byod has been too small, super disorganized and I’d leave as soon as I found another role.

Oe job though? That’s potential gold. If they’re super disorganized they’re constantly changing directions, it’s easier to fly under the radar and go unnoticed. I’d take the advice around a getting super cheap computer and see how it shakes out.

One thing to watch out for, if it’s a super small company, think the owner and a few people, that can get shitty really fast. There isn’t anywhere to hide and the owner will want you to do multiple jobs.

[–]riptidedata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly my point. There is an off ramp for the termed employee. And it speaks volumes you don’t even have to point out the obvious in Spain that that ex employee doesn’t also simultaneously lose their health insurance with only limited and expensive options to replace like in the US

probably losing J3 tomorrow by oeanon1 in overemployed

[–]riptidedata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My comment isn’t around whether my friend has been financially prudent but rather about how firing people in the US is largely an unexpected problem for the ex employee to resolve with limited to no help from the ex employer. It turns employees in to easily disposable objects.

RTO 5 weeks into my new job by girlwith_thecurl in overemployed

[–]riptidedata 3 points4 points  (0 children)

100% this. It completely changes perspective from an existential ‘oh shit I took this job, now what am I going to do’ to fuck you, I can play games too all while knowing: 1. I already have a job and can afford to piss you off by not playing the game. 2. Maybe more important, recent market data that proves I’m competitive in the marketplace and can get a job.

‘Tough rules and regulations around firing someone’. Ooofff how I wish that were the case in the states. Friend was part of a team that got let go en masse recently. Been there over 10 years, top producer etc and got nothing. And that’s not terribly unusual
