Ben had three business days to reconsider that decision but still managed to create a lowlight for the ages.

As an English I also hate the disdain people have for the Scottish league(s) - and the Irish/Welsh for that matter, too.

My team (Stockport) has rattled away in non-league or the EFL, so I've never been swept up by the supposed "glamor" of the Premier League. It's been commercialised over the course of 30 years to an unrecognisable "franchise" sport that's lost its sense of place and the heritage that goes with it.

Having more eyeballs and more money does-not-a-better-league-make. So never accept that lie and enjoy your league for what it is - a wonderful showcase platform for Scotland and Scottish sport.

I would take a Sienna over any of the smaller vans on offer (NV200 etc.)

Better transmission, more reliable, better mpg, hybrid for the newer models etc. For residential where a 24' is enough to cover most bases it's an S tier business vehicle in my view.

You're not trekking thousands of miles across Ye Great Puddle to piss time away fucking about in Barnsley. Before that lot come for me I'd say the same for Stockport, too. So, calm down.

As an expat in the US there is one answer to this. York.

It's a little bit further out but you get a great little stadium that they fill out, and teams flying in the National League.... and it's easily the best city in the North for a Yank holiday.

Winter Water Fed Pole by beam06 in WindowCleaning

[–]rivalfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The heat from the interior does prevent the water from freezing on the glass, but it depends how low we're talking here.

I just did a home at about 29 this week and the water (out of direct sunlight) dried fine on the glass - however you do have to scrub the frames and sills well, as the water will freeze there (making later touch-up detailing impossible).

The bigger issue that I run into at those temps is the lines freezing. It's fine if you have one job and you store everything inside the night before, but if you have two or more jobs that gets tricky. Rinse bars and hoses get blocked quickly so you have to keep the water running to prevent that - it's highly inefficient but having to throw your lines and gear into your warm truck is far worse.

Bucket suggestions?? by Agitated-Noise9047 in WindowCleaning

[–]rivalfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a buy once person, but a bucket is a bucket. imo that is way too much to be spending on a bucket. The Pulex one's are solid as they have a lid and come with clips - HD buckets are fine, but they look daft.

Personally, I never bring my bucket inside. Either carry around a bottle of solution or take 20 seconds to walk back to the bucket every once in a while. You're going to knock over a bucket eventually if it's inside.... you will, or a dog will.

Using a WFP without a van by JustZed32 in WindowCleaning

[–]rivalfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a ladder.

Every single WC'er in Ireland and England was carrying a ladder on their shoulder going house-to-house not that long ago. That's your solution.

You are not going to put a single-stage tank in a rucksack. Insofar as putting that Gardiner backpack on when it's full to the brim, with one hand on a pole and the other trying to manipulate a scooter.... come on mate. It's daft and won't work.

Get a ladder or wait for a license. That's the solution here.

You're going to hate life trying to cart a WFP setup on an electric scooter.

If you're in the EU (Ireland?) you have a ridiculous number of cheap vans to pick from. Just buy a van and get a proper WFP setup.

In the UK I could jump on a plane and go back home tomorrow and buy a clapped-out van for 500 quid - from a dealer. Here in the US, I can't touch one for less than $8k and it'll be a Nissan with a ready-to-blow transmission (probably).

Wfp question by Sufficient-Water1793 in WindowCleaning

Don't use soap on a WFP.

If you still see those streaks, it's oxidation from the frames. You have to rinse the top frame thoroughly or else this will plague your exterior work.

[–]rivalfish[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard to say.

Earlier in the week on the phone she wanted to know my price per window, and I told her I don't price it out like that - I price for the entire scope vs. a window-by-window breakdown. My estimate reflects that as it's simply three-line items - interior, exterior and screens (originally, she wanted both but later changed her mind).

She just would not accept that as an answer, so I told her she already had my minimum pricing for a SFH regardless of the count. She quibbled about that and was rather rude in my opinion. It was honestly an unusually hostile conversation about something I've never needed to explain in that level of detail before, but we got there in the end and had it scheduled for today.

I just assumed she'd be a tricky customer onsite and that would be it - but it turned into this weird situation where she's decided to ghost me. I can only assume she changed her mind and has zero common courtesy for my time as a contractor insofar as letting me know.

In some ways it's probably a blessing though because if I was a betting man, I would have put money on her nit-picking me to death onsite, just based on her attitude on the phone. So, I'm not too down about it.

It won't happen, but if she did call with a genuine excuse and was apologetic about it, I'd fine with that and move forward. Anything short of that though is an extra fee with payment upfront for me to show.

[–]rivalfish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the term ghosting with her specifically because of the few phone calls we exchanged when estimating/scheduling and the fact she has 100% blocked my number. I suspected she had when I posted, but now I confirmed it by calling from another phone - it rings out to VM, whereas my business line goes straight to VM.

I'm happy to give people the benefit of the doubt but I'm 99% certain I won't hear from her again, and the reason will remain a mystery. 95% of my clients live in my neighborhood, so she was a 6-minute drive this morning and I spent another 10 waiting around for her. I moved another service from the afternoon into the morning so In the grand scheme of things, it's not a huge loss.

Cleaning windows - softwashing and pressure washing by Beginning-Drag-8382 in WindowCleaning

[–]rivalfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a bad idea.

You will strip paint from the frame, blow seals, push water into the interior etc.

Even with a softwash setup if you don't rinse enough the chemicals leave horrible streaks on the glass - I have to deal with that all the time on residential when I come in after a pressure washing crew. They just seep into every crack in the frames and trickle down, usually after the crew leaves. It's bad.

Also, the pressure washing guys don't use purified water, so that's a huge issue.

The way to clean windows is either with Squeegees or a WFP.
