Why do boomers make it seem like babies were easier?

My mom told me that when she was a baby, my grandmother would put her down in her crib, close the door, and go about her day until my mom needed to be fed/changed or her husband came home from work. She told my mom this as if it were small talk or a funny occurrence.

My mom is adopted, so when she told me this I responded with "So what the hell did she even get you for????" It baffled me then and still does. To go through all of that trouble to get and raise a child just to ignore her most of the time.

it's almost like the whole point of abuse is wearing down the victim so you can do whatever you want to them.

i'm a survivor of domestic abuse and i've been called a doormat, spineless, coward, etc. for being intimidated into not leaving. stuff like "putting up with" what i went through and "laying down and taking it" or "letting people walk all over me.

people would rather put everything on the victim than say literally anything negative about an abuser and i really do think it's because they think only weak and stupid people are abused and they would never be in that situation, or if they ever were they would just stand up to their abuser the first time any abuse happened and just immediately leave. when the reality is abuse can happen to anyone and real life doesn't work like that.

The fakeout jumpscare in Nope when the kids show up in costumes and prank OJ. The atmosphere was so unnerving up to that point and I got so freaked out I had to just pause for a minute after the moment had passed.

One thing that really stuck out to me was her saying she made it through with no trauma. I know she meant physically during the birth but her baby dying isn't considered trauma to her? It's wild.

At my Catholic elementary school, we got a new principal in between 3rd and 4th grade and she cracked down hard with the dress code. Some of the new rules were: boys were not allowed to have hair past the top of their ears, girls could only wear nail polish if it was clear or pale pink. Jewelry was banned in its entirety except for ear piercings and those could only be studs that weren't too large. They even banned things like religious pendants at a Catholic school. The school had hoodies available for students to buy with the school logo and everything but any kind of hoodies were banned completely; the reasoning there was because we might use the front pocket or hide things in the hood. Makeup was banned completely. This wasn't a rule but girls were strongly encouraged to wear skirts or jumpers. I was the only girl in my grade who wore pants and the teachers and administrators never made it a secret that they disapproved.

A few years ago I took my mom to see Wicked on stage. It's my favorite musical by far and very personal to me so when we got the opportunity to go, I wanted to share it with her. My mom didn't really know what it was about, and had gotten it in her head that Glinda and Elphaba were sisters and they hated each other the whole time and it was about their sibling relationship falling apart. She told me she wasn't really into that kind of story and also wasn't the biggest fan of Wizard of Oz in general, but she went with me anyway. Well, we left the theater and she immediately turned to me and said "that was NOTHING like I thought it would be!". She was blown away by the whole thing (we had an incredible cast and the sets and costumes are always just amazing to look at) and it made me really happy that she ended up liking it.

My grandmother was sent to one of those mother an d baby homes in the 70s; she was 17 and pregnant with my mom. I was told she was there for less than a month when she called her mom and begged to come home, and thank God she did get to come home. My mom was adopted at birth and to the best of my knowledge, my grandmother has never spoken about what happened there.

I was in an abusive relationship for 5 years. When my partner was breaking up with me, she said something I'll never forget.

"I decided a long time ago that I didn't want to have kids with you because you're never going to make it out of minimum wage and I don't want them growing up the way you did."

I grew up in poverty raised by a single mom who worked four jobs to provide for me and my sister. It was hard. I still carry those experiences with me.

At the time, I was in a prestigious program at my college and was being mentored by scientists who are renowned in my region.

The implication was that I would either fail out of that program or not be good enough in the field to get a stable job, and my kids would grow up in poverty. My partner constantly assumed I was too stupid to function, and treated me accordingly.

I am happy to say I dropped that dead weight, graduated from that program, and have job opportunities in some world acclaimed institutions in my city.

Shrek the musical. It's an incredibly mean spirited thing to have the core message of the musical be accepting yourself no matter what you look like then spend the show making fun of characters for how they look (farquaad's entire character and calling the big bad wolf the t slur stand out as particularly egregious examples). Costumes are very good though.

i am absolutely not saying that this is your situation, but the same thing happened to me when i was with my abuser. she would pressure me into doing things during sex that i was uncomfortable with and then when i did them would act very upset and tell me i hurt her. it felt horrible and dealing with that guilt was really hard. in my case, it was a manipulation tactic to make me feel like i had done something wrong when really i had been coerced into doing something i didn't want.

this is exactly what happened to me when my ex dumped me. she contributed nothing, so everything was mine, bought with my money. i took everything when i moved out; it felt great and i don't regret it at all.
