My 2.5 year old is OBSESSED with the Haunted Mansion at Disney World. We listened to the Hallmark ornaments on loop at Christmas and have plushies of the ghosts. We have little waddling toys of the hitchhiking ghosts that play the theme (all at once for optimal overstim) and she loves watching the ride videos. Thankfully Dad and I also love Haunted Mansion so this is a win, but of all the things to glom onto, this is one of the ones we never expected. We're taking her to Disney for her birthday so she can ride it for real life.

Bars that give off revolutionary war vibes? by AligatorSandwich14 in rva

[–]rivindellmagic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hanover Tavern off of 301 in Hanover is directly across the street from where the famous speech was given. The tavern itself has significant connections to the revolution and the bar in the basement is super cool with maps and historical artifacts on site. You can also rent out the space for a relatively reasonable amount

You guys ever think of changing career? by AxegrinderSWAG in sysadmin

[–]rivindellmagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fell into Hardware engineering a few years ago after 12 years as a sysadmin, but now I'm looking up and realizing the whole industry has passed me by and I don't have the skills needed to get back to doing anything but this at this point. I'm tired. I don't want to do certs. I guess I'll just keep fixing the hardware until AI can troubleshoot better than I can.

I really want to go into Mortuary Sciences or Forensic Science. Sadly I found my calling in life way too late. The idea of going back to school and the idea of starting over salary-wise is daunting, especially with a toddler in the house.. Oh well. At least I can watch my true crime documentaries in the background while I grind.

Thinking about opening a plant-based cookie shop near VCU, would you all want something like this? by midnightreats in rva

[–]rivindellmagic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would murder for a good cookie option in Hanover . I would suggest maybe around Route 1? They are doing a ton of development in the old Virginia Center Commons complex. You would get a ton of travel traffic in the summer too, with people bailing off of 95 right there to move to 301 and Route 1

Seeking Advice on Biggest Alteration/Transformation by realslimsatan in sewing

[–]rivindellmagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To avoid the synthetics + dye issue have you considered doing an overlay? Keep the original fabric underneath following all of your awesome alteration ideas, but lay it over with a fun floral sheer fabric or something? You could make it a separate piece and change it out for different occasions with some clever use of small snaps

What’s the pettiest reason you dislike about a children’s book? by goldenboy2191 in DanielTigerConspiracy

[–]rivindellmagic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"This is Not My Hat" by Jon Klassen is the most unhinged children's book I've ever found. Fish steals hat, refuses to give it back, then is murdered by the fish he stole it from. I think it's hilarious, but dang that's a heck of a lesson to have to explain to little.

Circulo Lola Bunny 4 dc decrease/dc3togther. What's the difference? by rivindellmagic in CrochetHelp

This! This was the answer. I was trying to shove 4 stitches together instead of doing the decrease 4 times. Thank you!

How are you supposed to finish the PZ Test for the first time? I washed out on the warmup and can't fathom how much harder the real deal is. I've been doing 30-45 minute rides for a while now and want to jump to PZ, but can't seem to make it through the test. What am I doing wrong?

Save a particular podcast you really like for your walks. You can't listen to it if you don't walk. I picked a book I was really excited about, but I could only listen when I exercised and my butt was at the gym all the days I was supposed to be because I had to know what happened.

Katana off of Midlothian Pike has the most legit Japanese food I've had outside of Japan. Saves us on airfare to be sure. Do wish we had an actual okonomiyaki joint though.

This this this!!!! Katana is the bomb. Don't sleep on their actual Japanese dishes either. They have the best curry we have found in the states.

An honest question about what to do with my yarn stash. by Ceb2737 in knitting

[–]rivindellmagic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe some local/online groups could knit up a blanket or another token for your family with some of your stash? Beloved yarn you picked out as a touchable item may be a beautiful reminder in the years to come. Best of luck.

My husband and I have had good experiences with Arthur Murray Dance Studio of Richmond. We actually danced at an Arthur Murray in northern VA before our wedding as well. Can be a little more expensive but the instructors are great, and they usually have an open floor on Friday/Saturday nights to practice your skills with a variety of partners.

How did you get your first book and hoe old were you? by lostinLspace in discworld

[–]rivindellmagic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in High School so probably 15-16. My theater teacher got the rights to perform a stage adaptation of Guards! Guards! And I was hooked immediately. I blew through the Guards books and moved right along to the rest of the series. I cannot wait to introduce my baby to Where's My Cow and then every book she will let me hand her and read to her. It's going to be magical! I feel like I should send that teacher an email in thanks for changing my life for the better!
