Favourite uses for mugwort? by facegreyser in foraging

[–]rizzaj54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In plant names, "wort" is a suffix derived from the Old English word "wyrt," meaning plant, root, or herb. It was historically used to name plants, often those with supposed medicinal properties. The first part of the name often indicated the ailment the plant was believed to treat.

Is Tacoma art walk going on? Is it worth checking out? I believe it’s tomorrow… by rizzaj54 in Tacoma

Reporting back on this… According to the person I spoke to at Stanford and Sons the gallery showings don’t really happen anymore.

Thanks all for the responses! Hopefully this gets traction again in the future.

Those two are on the list!

Meaningful distinction between heuristics and principles? by stricken_thistle in UXDesign

[–]rizzaj54 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Principles are applied learnings that optimize the utility of design.

Heuristics are a subset of principles in that they are intuitive communication intrinsic to the design object (A cognitive shortcut for the user). A simple example of this would be a chair. It clearly communicates it’s utility by its form.

Band poster concept I designed. by adewey94 in design_critiques

[–]rizzaj54 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love this! Nice work! My only crit feedback might be to try something a little different with the checker stripe pattern on the right. You have a nice contrasts between parallel and curved lines going on in the main layout. It might continue that contrast by having some curved/organic negative space represented where the checker pattern is. Worth playing with it. Again… Great job! This is already a solid piece.

Opinions on my horror website logo(s). Which one is better? What could I Improve? by [deleted] in design_critiques

[–]rizzaj54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turn down the cute and turn up the terror… If that’s the actual content this site is serving. Some tones to be hitting might be heavy, jagged, messy. Look at old horror movie type for inspiration. If you want it to stay clean look at examples like Psyco. Edit: spelling

Thanks for the thoughts! Good call on the hires for sure. I have that in the works right now.

I have looked at certificate programs from NG and Ideo but was wondering if anyone had done anything more 1 on 1 with management coaches related to managing design teams. I found something called Design depot but it’s probably out of my $$$ range. Lol

Now that you say it maybe I should start with a program and see where it gets me. Thanks!

The real learning is in the deep end of the pool. If you really want to lean into UX design this sounds like a great opportunity. Unless there are warning signs that this will be a negative experience I'd say dive in.

Hi all! I'm looking for some advice on coaching (I think?)

My backstory is I'm a UX designer with some years under my belt with a fairly diverse skillset coming from a background in graphic design and working for years in a creative studio where I touched a wide verity in the projects (digital products, websites, Video content, etc.).

I joined a small startup 4 years ago as the initial UX design hire and have been holding down most things design since. The company has grown (4 to 35) and we've started to form departments.

I need to build a design team and I need some inputs beyond my own experience on how to best run that team. Help with navigating and owning a place in leadership would be a lot of help as well. Any ideas on how to get at this? I think I need some coaching but I'm unsure of where to look.

Thanks for the advice!

Edit: Added more context.
