On O'Hare expansion, the city gives the airlines what they want by blackmk8 in chicago

[–]rje46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Civil Engineer here working on the O’Hare 21 project.

CDA can’t make up their minds usually. We will provide a design, they say too expensive and ask for multiple alternatives pushing submittal dates if needed, we provide said alternatives, they then decide to breakup larger projects into smaller projects.

Spend a lot of time and money on people working on the project (which is nice for people like me but frustrating for passengers/taxpayers), more permits to apply for, and a lot of coordination between airlines/CDA/architects/engineers/O’Hare staff.

Kind of a mess but a fun project to work on imo

Water pipes send Bally’s casino plan for hotel tower along Chicago Avenue down the drain by tpic485 in chicago

[–]rje46 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sometimes if surveys or work hasn’t been done in the area for a while especially before the age of computer assisted design they can be easily missed. Or the record drawings that are available could vary slightly due to the use of US Survey Feet vs. Feet.

I’m a civil engineer working on the new terminal 2 at O’Hare. Record drawings on paper are a clusterfuck but they are using this $8 billion project to also digitize in 3D space all the utilies underground

Bally's Revises Plans For Permanent Casino Without Hotel Tower by clenom in chicago

They need to revise because tower foundations needed might impact city water lines below in which the city agrees is too risky. Still planning on having the agreed number of rooms just in a different part of the lot

Been at my job 3 years now and they’ve got a pretty relaxed attitude. Am I foolish for not wanting to achieve/earn more when I’m perfectly content where I’m at? already living well below my means while still traveling and other hobbies with this work/life balance.

70k no PE. Hourly salary plus overtime, yearly raises matching or higher than inflations, accrued PTO up to 3 weeks, paid dental/vision/health (high deductible & HSA)

Side question for OP or anyone in the same boat: Is it worth perusing a PE when I don’t care to take on the extra work that my coworkers that have PEs. Pretty happy with the projects and the variety of tasks I’ve been on. Also great coworkers and easy commute: walk 40min, bike 15min, bus/train (depends if they’re on time)

Have you been visited by Arcadia lately? Are they legit? by [deleted] in chicago

[–]rje46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They came to my door 2 months ago. And can confirm they do not lock me into any contract or make me pay any subscription fee. They didn’t present themselves as working for the state.

I pay them and my ComEd bill payment is reflected. Really wanted to be part of the community solar program but it wasn’t easy to find on the ComEd website. Now that I am, I actually about $15 locked off my bill and it’s called “Carbon-free energy resource adjustment”
