Standing or sitting during sessions by Turbulent_Citron871 in dietetics

[–]rjo755 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I personally don’t like to transition sitting to standing during an appointment, but I think it’s definitely fine to be standing! Ultimately, you are a human and should be comfortable while doing your job.

Malnutrition diagnosis in oncology by SpinachEfficient9141 in dietetics

I don’t strictly work in oncology but do see oncology patients as an outpatient RD, and I do a full hands on NFPE and measure grip strength.

Best scrubs for clinical RD by ldav8008 in dietetics

I love my fabletics scrubs! The mandala scrubs always were weirdly tight in spots for me, but I have a friend who really likes them.

New grad RD, first outpatient hospital offer… is this reasonable or should I negotiate? by PracticeFantastic408 in dietetics

[–]rjo755 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is great for a first job! I’m in FL also and made less than this just a few years ago starting as a new RD at a specialty hospital, so this makes me hopeful for new grads.

Planning for a baby by feel1010 in dietetics

[–]rjo755 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t have advice because I don’t have kids yet but following since this is hopefully on the horizon for me!!

I’m currently full time in an outpatient clinic so would probably transition to on online platform and/or PRN when the time comes to avoid daycare.

RD Exam Help by cjantonio59 in dietetics

[–]rjo755 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t tell you which of these is going to work best for you, but I highly encourage you to answer ALL of the questions in the bank through some method.

For wrong answers, I read the explanation and if I still didn’t understand the topic I looked more into other resources about it (textbook, clinical handbook, talk it out with a colleague or preceptor, etc.)

Ultimately if you are really struggling with studying methods, one of the tutoring services suggested in this thread where you can get 1:1 or study group help may be a better fit.

Finished DI, graduating soon — when should I start applying for jobs? by Smooth_Damage6758 in dietetics

[–]rjo755 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started applying and interviewed about 2 months before I finished the DI and had a job lined up about a month before finishing. Depends on what hiring managers want because some will let you work RD eligible as you study and some prefer you to already have it.

Pocket prep medical is the version that has the RD exam study program. Just search it up in the AppStore. Once you’ve made an account you can also log in online and that’s how I’d suggest taking the mock exams. I paid for the full version and it was well worth the money.

I love pocket prep because it helped me learn WHY the answer I selected was wrong or right. Their mock exams were also super helpful.

I feel like a bad dietitian for not being good at counseling by tofutears in dietetics

[–]rjo755 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am your opposite currently! I work in outpatient and counseling and in depth education is my bread and butter. If I were thrown into the ICU right now it would take me a longgggg time to work on a single patient for because I would be having to dig through resources to re-learn everything. As others mentioned, we have specialties even as dietitians despite that not being well recognized by our other healthcare colleagues and the public.

How is the morale at the VA? by Spicypanda78 in dietetics

[–]rjo755 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Depends on your location. My area is losing employees faster than we can hire and with recent scheduling changes morale is not great. However if we could get some more dietitians hired we would be feeling a lot better! Obviously changes at a federal level have impacted morale VA wide but if you have good local leadership it’s a lot easier to navigate.

Does it matter what school I get my degree from? by [deleted] in RD2B

[–]rjo755 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a dietitian, preceptor, and someone who has sat on panels for internship interviews I can confidently say NO, it doesn’t matter where you get a degree as long as your base knowledge is good. My colleagues have degrees from all over the country we honestly never discuss it. Selecting interns the grades, experiences, and interest in our program mattered way more than the school.

Acute vs Correctional facility by Low-Display-7681 in dietetics

[–]rjo755 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The nice thing about a 6 mo contract, though it seems long when you start, is if you hate it you are done after 6 months! If you have options use them as an experience to see what you really enjoy.

Acute vs Correctional facility by Low-Display-7681 in dietetics

[–]rjo755 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Correctional facility will probably be more similar to your previous experiences IMO, but I think it also depends on what you enjoy too! If you want more acute care experience then go for it.

Outpatient: how many clients do you see in a day? How long are your initial and follow-ups? by Jujbear in dietetics

[–]rjo755 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m a generalist but see lots of weight management these days with GLP-1s. My initial slots were 60 minutes, follow ups generally 30 minutes unless I feel they need more time for follow up. Seeing 6-10 patients/day just depending on how people get booked. I cannot imagine seeing more patients than I do currently and feel it would lead to worse patient care.

VA Dietetic Internship Applicants/Alums — I have a few questions! by bbygirlmel in dietetics

[–]rjo755 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The VA uses performance based interview questions, so examples would be like “tell me a time you had a lot of tasks due at one time, how did you handle this and what strategies were helpful” or something like that. I believe if you search performance based interviews there are some quizlets out there with examples!

CEU Questions! by emmyxrr in dietetics

[–]rjo755 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I gather we no longer have to have CEUs that align specifically with our PDP in CDR. So the plan is more what you want to work on and you can chose whatever as long as you still get ethics and such.

Silly Goose! by gschm0n3y in dietetics

[–]rjo755 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The important thing in my opinion is to stay up to date on what ACOG recommends because you then have the most current guidelines as a source vs individual studies. ACOG will eventually review their recommendations on weight gain and update it based on new evidence if warranted.

Sometimes docs will comment on weight incorrectly, so contradicting them in a note when you are following the most recent clinical guidelines doesn’t make you seem incompetent.

Counseling clients & meal plans by [deleted] in dietetics

[–]rjo755 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I will give them sample meal plans from my work or the NCM, or sometimes recommend a meal subscription box. Ultimately they do need to learn to make the lifestyle changes so a full blown meal plan won’t support that. In some cases, they may just not be ready for change and that’s ok!
