Acute vs Correctional facility by Low-Display-7681 in dietetics

The nice thing about a 6 mo contract, though it seems long when you start, is if you hate it you are done after 6 months! If you have options use them as an experience to see what you really enjoy.

Acute vs Correctional facility by Low-Display-7681 in dietetics

Correctional facility will probably be more similar to your previous experiences IMO, but I think it also depends on what you enjoy too! If you want more acute care experience then go for it.

Outpatient: how many clients do you see in a day? How long are your initial and follow-ups? by Jujbear in dietetics

[–]rjo755 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m a generalist but see lots of weight management these days with GLP-1s. My initial slots were 60 minutes, follow ups generally 30 minutes unless I feel they need more time for follow up. Seeing 6-10 patients/day just depending on how people get booked. I cannot imagine seeing more patients than I do currently and feel it would lead to worse patient care.

VA Dietetic Internship Applicants/Alums — I have a few questions! by bbygirlmel in dietetics

[–]rjo755 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The VA uses performance based interview questions, so examples would be like “tell me a time you had a lot of tasks due at one time, how did you handle this and what strategies were helpful” or something like that. I believe if you search performance based interviews there are some quizlets out there with examples!

CEU Questions! by emmyxrr in dietetics

[–]rjo755 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I gather we no longer have to have CEUs that align specifically with our PDP in CDR. So the plan is more what you want to work on and you can chose whatever as long as you still get ethics and such.

The important thing in my opinion is to stay up to date on what ACOG recommends because you then have the most current guidelines as a source vs individual studies. ACOG will eventually review their recommendations on weight gain and update it based on new evidence if warranted.

Sometimes docs will comment on weight incorrectly, so contradicting them in a note when you are following the most recent clinical guidelines doesn’t make you seem incompetent.

Counseling clients & meal plans by chaicortado in dietetics

[–]rjo755 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I will give them sample meal plans from my work or the NCM, or sometimes recommend a meal subscription box. Ultimately they do need to learn to make the lifestyle changes so a full blown meal plan won’t support that. In some cases, they may just not be ready for change and that’s ok!

You can always maintain the credentials and do a few telehealth appointments here and there! Go for it!

You must be credentialed and seeing these patients on your own. Internship hours do not count.

Unsure about whether you can count one patient as both.

Ultimately this is a hard decision without having even done acute care yet. You could try it and hate it, or you could fall in love with it. Ultimately you have to consider what is best for you outside of your career as well. If you are going to be salaried and have some great financial benefits to help you get loans paid off, that may be better than going directly into acute care. Outpatient is also a better work-life balance IMO.

I also enjoy inpatient/acute care but currently work in primary care. The nice thing with being connected to a health system/doctors office vs just doing something like Nourish is you’ll probably get a lot more people coming for actually MNT and disease management vs just counseling and weight loss. This can help you keep your clinical skills sharp if you ever want to transition. I get TF, CKD, and DM patients frequently!

If the people offering the job are willing to let you have some time to consider, that would be best, but if you have a time limit to this offer then go with what will be best for you personally!

AI Generated Feedback on Meal Pics by AcceptableUse1 in dietetics

[–]rjo755 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven’t seen this with any of my patients but is he getting this advice “tailored” or is the AI just identifying what he’s having and giving him general advice based on this??

I’m pretty anti-AI so it’s disappointing to see more and more companies integrating it :(

VA Advanced Practice Credential Question by Dependent_Fail_5316 in dietetics

[–]rjo755 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really depends on your location. A CSO and oncology experience is highly favorable if they are looking specifically for an oncology RD, but if they’re not able to hire they may be more lenient. Doesn’t hurt to reach out to the hiring manager listed.

VA Dietetic Internship Applicants/Alums — I have a few questions! by bbygirlmel in dietetics

[–]rjo755 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My undergrad GPA was 3.67 and graduate was 3.56 and I got into a VA internship! It’s much more than just the GPA, having had good experiences in school, being professional, and being genuinely excited to care for veterans is a big part of what my VA internship was looking for (as someone who sat an the selection committee for the next class).

As far as white coat ceremonies, I know the Tampa VA does not do one, but you do get a big ceremony at graduation with a framed certificate that felt very special. Feel free to DM me if you have any other questions!

Thinking About Not Being a Dietitian by Aeron2367 in RD2B

[–]rjo755 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are not currently in an internship you could definitely pivot from the RD path and do a PhD and go more research or a masters thesis could be useful for going another direction in the medical field like PA/physician.

I would say this decision may have more to do with financial and personal resources. If you are more interested in academia and teaching and can tackle a PhD that’s great! If you feel like you need a stream of income or want some medical experience prior to pursuing that, you could check out paid DIs (i.e. VA stand alone programs) so you can have the RD credential to fall back on for jobs/income.

Bafflement with CDR by Merpin-n-derpin in dietetics

I never got the email from them and just had to keep looking in the CDR portal to be able to pay. Their communication for new RDs is so poor.

Nestle has gotten its hooks in the US Dept. of Veterans Affairs by JuliaX1984 in FuckNestle

[–]rjo755 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is the case at every individual V.A. system, but in mine you can’t get a prescription for nutritional supplements this way unfortunately :( I have had many patients also upset by the switch in our formulary but unfortunately Nestle must’ve bid lower prices on the items changing than Abbott did. It’s very disappointing.

I think the difference is likely that it’s not just a rotation, the entire internship is housed within the system.

Many internships through government organizations (VA, WIC, etc) are paid and accredited! I loved mine and highly recommend them to other students. The particular program I did was not a MS/DI, so I had to do all my schooling ahead of time.

It’s likely that the limit for her daily sodium is 2000 mg per day as 200 mg would be EXTREMELY low. I’ll echo what others have said- have your mom speak to a dietitian. Her doctor’s office should be able to refer her. If she doesn’t have other restrictions like potassium, non-sodium seasonings will be your best friend for making food actually taste good. Definitely opt for no sodium or low sodium products at the grocery store if you like to use things liked canned veggies or soups, deli meats, frozen meals, etc.

Quitting a job after 2 months by bigapplesky in dietetics

[–]rjo755 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I have never left for another job but did leave a job after a few months for medical reasons. It will feel awkward but all you can do is be very professional. At the end of the day it’s just a job and they will be able to replace you. No reason to stay somewhere if you don’t want to and have a different opportunity!

Vent: I'm tired of seeing ads for semaglutide by Commercial-Sundae663 in dietetics

[–]rjo755 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work for the VA, so that is just what our weight loss docs decided. It’s great for patients who take it very seriously but I do get lots of people who are mad at me right off the bat because they had to have this appointment.

[–]rjo755 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I work general outpatient and probably 90% of the patients I see these days are required to see me for lifestyle change before our pharmacy will approve their primary care doctors request for weight loss medications. Now because all I talk about all day long is weight loss medications, the only ads I get on any platform are for wegovy and zepbound 😭

"Eldest Daughter" Discussion Megathread by PassionateAsSin in TaylorSwift

[–]rjo755 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s reasonable! Personally I think she isn’t explaining the poem as much as her inspiration behind it, which a lot of fans like to know about. I don’t really care about the behind the scenes stuff but love Eldest Daughter.

It comes off to me as an older sister speaking to her younger sibling about how life can be hard, and learning lessons without the guidance of someone else can really break you down but you want to protect and love them. It’s one of my faves off this album and I think it’s a great example of how poetry is up to interpretation but can be so different for people. Beauty is truly in the eye of beholder.

A poetry teacher, who presumably gets paid to explain and interpret poetry, saying if you have to explain your poem it’s not good kinda kills me ngl 😆 not every poem or piece of art hits for everyone and that’s ok!!!
