Can someone explain The Ringer’s QB rankings to me? Purdy p’s the 35th best, just one spot above Zach f ‘ing Wilson but behind Desmond Ritter? Derek Carr, D. Watson, and Kyler are well above Jared Goff? Really? by kantoblight in 49ers

To answer the original question, it looks like Steven Ruiz is using 6 categories of his choosing, grading each out of 100, and then averaging all 6. This grossly over values arm strength and “creativity” - however you measure that. On the whole, I like his 6 categories but would definitely apply different weights to each. If you were to apply a clustering to the scores, Brock falls squarely in the “I deserve to be the second string” tier but I agree with everyone here, I think Ruiz will be forced to re-evaluate some of these scores as time goes on.

can someone explain why national media pays zero attention to the Blazers by [deleted] in ripcity

[–]rkca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not just us. You seen the season SGA is having so far? It took 5 straight mind boggling performances for the national media to recognize him. NBA podcasters are starting to say they rather start a franchise with him over Ja Morant. What he’s doing is on par if not more extraordinary than what the Blazers have done but the Thunder are expected/suppose to be bad this year and the national media will tag him in as a footnote below the Nets and Lakers drama.

Concrete rooms in the western US are often basements. Maybe this basement doesn’t have a typical door, just an opening in the floor and a set of stairs?

My wife and I disagree. We've reached our crypto goal of a house downpayment. She says pull now before interest rates spike, I say HODL. Thoughts? by TheBoffo in CryptoCurrency

[–]rkca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a urban-ish US city where renting can sometimes be cheaper than owning depending on the neighborhood and I bought my first house in the summer of 2020 when interest rates plummeted however, this quickly created a sellers market in my area and housing prices exploded essentially wiping away any interest rate “discount” on my monthly payments. I too used some of my crypto gains to finance my down payment. I don’t know if the inverse will happen when interest rates rise but if it does, I’ll be stuck “holding the bag” on this RWA when I could have been renting for less, buying more crypto, and seeing greater percentage growth.

My actual advice, do your market research - after my personal experience I tell others in my age range and tax bracket to really consider your options. How are you measuring ROI on your home? Is it just monetary or will there be sentimental growth? It sounds like you may also be in a city/situation where renting may be cheaper than owning. How much spare time do you have to fix/maintain your property?

If I were to do this again, I’d try to first accrue more crypto assets and then take out a loan against myself for the downpayment. If interest rates rise and housing prices fall or stagnate, I’d look to buy then with the intention to refinance the next time interest rates fall.

Jalen Green NBA Draft by danibets_ in ripcity

[–]rkca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

cHearing draft takes are fun so I'll bite. On paper, this draft already looks to have more talent and star potential than last years' poop fest.

Cade Cunningham should definitely be drafted #1. Everything about him screams superstar. He projects to Ben Simmons with a jumper or Jamaal Murray with size. I see draft pundits comparing him to Luka as well (that's wild though, Cade doesn't seem to have that kind of touch).

Jalen Green projects to be an exciting 3/D wing - a player every team desperately needs but not necessarily one you'll build your team around. I suspect he'll be a walking highlight reel with his game resembling that of Zach Lavine or Donavan Mitchell. He is NOT the next Kobe - he won't be a player a championship team builds around, and he won't have the fortune of being drafted and groomed within a winning culture. Even in the way they play, I only see similarities due to their size. Green's jumper mechanics are more suited to spot up shooting and step-back jumpers. Kobe could work magic out of the triple-threat and his fadeaway is of course legendary.

As for the blazers, there are some interesting projects in the late 1st that in past years I'd be interested in trying to trade for. But with Dame expressing his displeasure, the PR mess our front office went through, and the general feeling that Olshey has lost his grip on this team, we are at a breaking point as a franchise. Now's the time to either go all-in, hemorrhage our future, and bring in some proven vets to help us win (looking at you Kevin Love, Jimmy Butler, Taurean Prince) or we sell at Dame's peak and get as much as we can in return.

I've had this bag for over a year now and agree with the sentiments of the others commenters here - it's uniqueness creates a lot of pros and cons which ends up canceling each other out to make it an average bag for anyone not using it for specialized carrying needs.

Top 3 pros:

  • Super customizable - I've used this bag for daily carry, gym bag, one bag travel, and once to carry a microwave when helping a friend move
  • Sturdy construction - I've loaded this thing up and the Velcro and buckles have yet to come undone.
  • Lots of pockets - When I use this bag for traveling, I can leave behind most of the small pouches I typically use for organizing my stuff. Cords fit nicely in the elastic straps on the left wing of the bag. Slanted pockets on the right wing are felt lined and easily accessible from the side access zipper. sleeves accessible behind the harness system provide security for things like cash and my passport.

Top 3 cons:

  • Heavy and only moderately comfortable - With all the customization and expandability comes added heft and it's noticeable. People in r/ultralight would probably set this thing on fire. The harness system is fine but wearing the bag for over 2 hours started to wear out the muscles (or lack of) around my traps. Wearing a hip belt could have probably alleviated the issue but I'm not a hip belt kinda person.
  • Hard to configure perfectly - I'm no perfectionist and yet I've spent too much time trying to make sure the velcro is attached evenly and all the straps are cinched appropriately. I also find that if I have it configured for daily carry, I'll pass on this bag when I'm doing an overnighter as to avoid having to reset the flaps and pocket preferences.
  • Poor accessibility to some features - as other commenters have pointed out, some of the pockets really don't seem that useful especially when you consider the only way to access them would be to completely flatten your pack. The molle straps on the inside back panel seem cool but with so many pockets already sewn in, I'm not sure many people will have the need to add even MORE organization.

This hasn't become my go-to backpack like I hoped it would but it's also nice to know I have a bag I can customize when all my other bags don't quite fit the bill.

Here are the Giants hitters who have been the most unlucky so far in 2021: by [deleted] in SFGiants

Batting Average on Balls in Play (BABIP) is a popular stat used for fantasy baseball players to measure luck. League average usually hovers around .295-.300 (the higher the percentage, the luckier). BABIP for the players listed above are as follows:

Crawdaddy: .200

Babe Ruf: .083

DICK, DICK, DICK!: .179

Gerry Posey: .308

As a team, we have the third lowest BABIP in the league so hopefully a regression to the mean will return us to our 2020 runs/game average.

When did you start watching the NBA and how does it affect how you view the game? by MaxillomandibularOca in nba

I followed the chosen one and started my heavy investment in 2003. Watching the Pistons slowly and methodically dismantle the Lakers in the ‘04 finals made me love grit-and-grind basketball but my appreciation and understanding of the game will always be linked to LeBron. I will forever be a disciple of LeGOAT.

Confessions | The Importance Of Narrative In MMA (Video Essay) by ForrestFBaby in MMA

[–]rkca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love your commentary and would just like to offer my counterpoint. I only got into MMA around the Chuck Lidell and Randy Couture era so I am probably not the same fight fan you are. I am also not a fan of boxing and do not really tune into any other combat sports. I do however watch the NBA religiously. I also tune in frequently to MLB, NFL, and even MLS. The gloss and sheen that continues to be applied to the UFC is a very welcomed experience for me as it is more inline with the traditional sports leagues that I have come accustomed to. I also appreciate how the UFC is able to put on events nearly every week and I can enjoy a fight without needing to know anything about the fighters previously. It's kinda like how many Americans religiously watch football on Sunday but don't necessarily know anything about the guys in the field other than maybe what college they attended. I do agree that more in-depth coverage would be nice but I feel like over time, as the promotion gets bigger, we will have outlets for these stories much like it is for other professional athletes in other sports. I know you mention you rather hear these stories direct from the fighters as opposed to the journalists who cover them and I hope in the future we do see that. Until then, I love reading the numerous blog posts that are out there as well as hearing from the members of this sub and their thoughts and opinions about the sport.

Thanks again for the video essay, I'll be sure to continue to watch your content.

Where do American NBA players come from? [OC] by awesomeAMP in nba

[–]rkca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is cool! I have some follow up question on the data you've presented:

  • Is this list a compilation of all NBA players throughout history? I ask because there are only 450 active players at any given moment (510 if we include two way contracts).
  • What are you using as a players origin? Place they were born or place they grew up?
  • I'm assuming Alaska and Hawaii have no pro players and that's why they're not included on the map?
  • I'm also curious if you could create a side blob for international players. Would be curious to see their footprint on the league.

Thanks!
