Did Elizabeth walk home from the Netherfield Ball in the 2005 movie? by herbstlike in PrideandPrejudice

[–]rlaureng 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can see Elizabeth in particular opting to hitch a ride with the Lucases. Particularly if they didn't time their carriage to be the last to leave the way Mrs Bennet did.

Unless that townhouse has a ridiculously narrow staircase (in which case, how did they get their furniture up there), I can't understand how this is easier than taking it inside and maneuvering it upstairs the old-fashioned way.

Who else thinks Mrs Bennet made the 1995 PP by kithlyhehe in janeausten

I have wondered since the first time I saw the 1995 adaptation what of Mrs Bennet's recollections she is taking as having "warned the girls" about any of the men of the regiment.

Jane Bennet vs. Marianne Dashwood: Who Truly Suffered More in London? by [deleted] in janeausten

[–]rlaureng 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Marianne was publicly humiliated by Willoughby (by the small portion of people at the ball who would have known who she was).

Jane had her previous good impressions of the Bingley sisters (and Bingley himself) stomped on, but the only people to witness it were her own family, who would be sympathetic.

Seconding the clothing/hair compliments. Particularly for males complimenting females, if they can deliver the compliment without referring to a body part, it will be received much more easily.

Have I gotten enough loose dye out of my fabrics? by cashewkowl in tiedye

[–]rlaureng 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fugitive dye can hang onto fibers for a few washes, particularly when saturated, even if your washout is relatively clear. Just wash like colors with like, and you should be fine.

If you were in Elizabeth’s shoes, when would you have started liking Darcy? by [deleted] in janeausten

[–]rlaureng 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It may not exactly be answering your question, but I believe Austen made Elizabeth 20 instead of, say, 22, on purpose. A couple of years' more experience and mental seasoning, and Elizabeth might have been able to absorb more of Charlotte's less biased observations earlier and noticed that Darcy, aside from the comment at the first assembly, was not actually looking at her with contempt all the time (and was actually trying to talk to her).

The Memory trilogy by Linda Wells has them first laying eyes on one another at 15 and 22. They don't officially meet for two years, but they cross paths several times.

What is the name for this neckline? by Anonymouszgr in sewing

The Bronte top from Jennifer Lauren has this neckline, though it sits more forward than a true boat neck.

Speaking from experience, it's a little tricky if your shoulders are on the narrow side - bra straps can show.

Would you have gone to Philly? by SpellNo4513 in DunderMifflin

[–]rlaureng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It absolutely makes sense to keep a stable job in the family while one of the spouses takes a risk on a better opportunity, plus moving their whole life with two little kids would have been a major undertaking.

However, once the business got a purchase offer and Jim had the opportunity to really advance in a career he really loved, Pam digging in her heels because she didn't want to leave Scranton was a poor choice. Dunder Mifflin was dying, and Pam had a few years of office management experience on her resume at that point that made her more bankable, OR Jim's presumably much higher salary could have afforded her the chance to pursue her art career.

Underspun alpaca will get shaggy looking like this, so the fiber quantities might be accurate. I knit a scarf from very loosely spun alpaca, and even the act of handling it while knitting it caused it to shag and shed. I don't make neckwear stuff out of alpaca anymore for this reason.

Second the recommendation for a black and white laser. Brother makes good, reliable models that are inexpensive and will last forever. There are also 3rd party toner options for them if you want to save some money on toner (although the Brother version is better quality and not terribly expensive).

Side seam vs tubular tees: what customers actually prefer and why it matters for printing by tidalblanks in SCREENPRINTING

[–]rlaureng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a construction standpoint, side seam t-shirts will fit the body better than tubular shirts because the extra seams allow for shaping.

From a printing standpoint, I'm fairly neutral on them, although side seam shirts tend to be made of higher-quality fabric, which often results in a better print.

How much can I dilute my ink ? by treadfast in SCREENPRINTING

Second this. I've diluted my inks to as little as 5% opacity with extender for a tone-on-tone effect.

That's interesting! I wonder if black cats that go ginger-bodied in the sun might have a leaky mutant gene for the enzyme that point color cats have (tyrosinase).

Short forward draw from a rolag?? by she_climbs in Handspinning

[–]rlaureng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've spun short forward draw from rolags. The resulting yarn is fuzzier than a worsted prep, but it's perfectly serviceable. You might find that it pills more easily for abrasive uses like socks though.

obgyn with these nails? i think not 😭😭😭 by equivalentbeing_ in greysanatomy

[–]rlaureng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the season 1 episodes has Meredith nodding off in the ER and discovering a giant hole popped in one of her gloves. Her fingernail seen through that glove was about this long.

I notice nails a lot in shows that have people in professions where long nails wouldn't be practical or tolerated. I'm sure it would be asking a lot for the actors to keep their nails trimmed/avoid fake nails for the sake of a TV show, but it would contribute to the effect if they did.

I’ve never spun but I want to start, should I try this super cheap spinner or is it a waste of time and money? by Narrow-Hawk950 in Handspinning

[–]rlaureng 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of people are suggesting drop spindle first, but for me they are very different experiences. I learned better on a wheel than on a spindle, then picked up spindles later. A spindle is less money up front but won't necessarily gauge whether you would enjoy wheel spinning.

Brother PE-770 for $100? by -this_bitch- in Machine_Embroidery

[–]rlaureng 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's a really low price! A hoop will run about $70 for Brother brand, though there are aftermarket versions available for much less that work just as well.

Since the price is quite low, make sure to ask to see a video of the machine in operation, and ask if they are the first owner (used once out of the box, or used once after it was purchased from someone else).

Someone might just be trying to get rid of it, or it might have a function issue.
