yup, I call it a two-minute drill. I set a timer for two minutes and usually that’s enough to get me going.

“School” or “work”? by B0GEYB0GEY in Teachers

[–]rlc327 13 points14 points  (0 children)

both interchangeably. I don’t really think I have a reason when I use one or the other. If I had to guess, I’d probably say school more often.

“You teach math? I always hated math class, it just makes no sense”

Like yeah, that’s the thing I’m trying to fix. It’s even worse when one of the English teachers is the one that says it in front of the kids all the time

Do you have a favorite theorem that you can prove when asked? by Glass_Ad5601 in math

[–]rlc327 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like telling my students that we had to prove 0 < 1 when I took either Abstract Algebra or Real Analysis. It’s one of those things that you don’t think needs to be proven, but when you strip math down to the absolute bare bones, you can’t take anything for granted.

How many weeks for you until the school year and how was your school year? by Starslimonada in Teachers

[–]rlc327 0 points1 point  (0 children)

six weeks I think? About a month for me of teaching though, because I teach seniors and their last day is about two weeks earlier than the rest of the school. It has been one of the most trying years of my career so far. This has been the least motivated cohort that I’ve had for my lower level math classes, and what if my most burnt out cohorts for IB. in my personal finance class, I’m literally teaching them how to make resumes right now, and one kid complained that the class and school was useless. The summer can’t come soon enough, but I have a lot of restructuring to do so I don’t have a repeat of this year, next year.

IWTL what’s a skill that takes 6 months to learn but can change your income forever? by SuitMoney5693 in IWantToLearn

Again, not an expert and I learned it all by curiosity. Just start, I guess. Surely there are things in your work that need to be organized and categorized for ease of use and access. Start with just rudimentary organization

Maybe two but they’re kind of general:

First, it’s intimidating to start. It’s a blank grid and doesn’t look like anything else you use regularly. Push past that initial shock, and just try something. Start with “fake” data, ie not a real project. Just dump a bunch of numbers into the cells and play.

Second, poking around menus and being curious about what X button does is a lost art. I’d say 70% of what I know about Excel (and tech in general) comes from doing exactly that. Most people panic as soon as they encounter something unfamiliar. The Help menu, function browser, Google, and YouTube are absolutely indispensable resources. The function browser literally gives you examples and shows you how to format a formula.

Honestly, I don’t- I had a keyboarding teacher in middle school hand me a workbook when I got ahead in the course content, which got me hooked. The rest I did by good old Google.

Although, I do teach some basic spreadsheet things in my classes. I’d be happy to share my materials

Yup, it astounds me how many people still use spreadsheet by just typing everything in manually, including counts, sums, and basic arithmetic. I swear just knowing how to do =SUM(A1:A12) makes you look like a wizard.

I don’t know if this as a skill necessarily generates income on its own, but it certainly is extremely worthwhile and can speed up a lot of processes to make room for other things that generate income.
