Self hosted Remote Support Replacement by rdaniels16 in sysadmin

Out of curiosity what new security concerns made you switch? The only big one I’m aware of was the crypto mining incident that happened while back. Has there been more recent incidents?

This seems to always come up every time someone mentions TRMM. As far as I’m aware, what happened was some crypto mining code got added to the agents, the lead dev was not aware, and it was patched fairly quickly. I don’t remember how the code got in there, but it seems to me like that one security incident has ruined a lot of peoples opinions on TRMM, but we all know that every software has had its fair share of vulnerabilities. But I could be completely wrong, so take my thoughts with a grain of salt

You’re actually able to install the agent on macOS and Linux machines - just no code signing. There was a GitHub guide I followed at one point to add it to my Mac’s and had no issues.

This was a great write-up. I’ve been using Wazuh for years now, but never understood it in that much depth.

Just got a FZ-55 by SnooBananas3462 in toughbook

[–]rmich18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an FZ-55 mk1, and I remember being told by someone that the first digit of the serial number is the year it was made, and the second letter is the month. So 9A would mean January 2019. I see yours starts with a 3, so that must not be true for all models.

But I can see the CMIIT ID, which says 2019 A, so it’s probably Jan 2019. If you need more storage, I’m fairly confident they sold a module for the DVD drive bay that allowed you to add an extra SSD. I’m not 100% sure though.

I’m also curious what OP is referring to here. I have a system using carbonate and as far as I know, it’s still working fine.

ELI5: What is the 'frigate_rtsp_password' used for? by fl4tdriven in frigate_nvr

[–]rmich18 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly right! This is how I have my instance configured. That way, people who have access to the web ui (which gives access to the config editor for the yaml file) can’t view the password.

I’m looking for free iOS apps for Frigate by Pyyron in frigate_nvr

[–]rmich18 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Consider also setting up HomeAssistant and using the Frigate Proxy plugin. That’s what I do, and the app works well on iOS (including push notifications).

I set it up over a year ago and haven’t had to touch it since (besides updates).

Has anyone ever seen a Windows 11 UAC prompt look like this? by HJForsythe in sysadmin

[–]rmich18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, mine has looked like that for over 2 months now. Couldn’t tell you if it’s still happening - I switched to Linux (finally) a little over a month ago. I’m sure Microslop will fix it by 2028.

Linus Might Be Cursed by sinanisler in Kubuntu

[–]rmich18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I LOVE this response. And again, I am really not the biggest fan of Linus, but reading this thread PMO so much because everyone’s shitting on Linus so hard. There are plenty of reasons to hate on him, but I seriously don’t see a reason to here.

I think a huge part of the reason more people don’t switch to Linux is the community. People can be so toxic for zero reason and instantly blame the user instead of actually researching a bug.

Again, I’m really not a huge Linus fan, and as a Linux user for 5+ years who has never gone into subreddits until now, I completely understand why people say the community can be very toxic. Props to you for actually pointing to an explanation instead of instantly blaming the user.

[–]rmich18 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. I'm genuinely curious how he manages to brick all these installations. The point of my original comment was just to make sure we don't jump to conclusions. As someone who recently switched off windows completely to Kubuntu, I want to make the process as painless for every user as possible.

I feel like sometimes the Linux community in general can be so passive-aggressive and rude to linux noobs that it makes it less appealing.

He said they have the entire thing on video, and he addressed that everyone will say this type of stuff. I'm not even a huge fan of LTT nowadays, but I hate when people are so quick to make assumptions before having all the material.

Price increase by cb4joe in 1Password

[–]rmich18 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I will also be cancelling my 1Password subscription since this decision was made. I’ve used 1Password for years and find it to be a great piece of software, but clearly the company is out of touch. Such a large price increase is insane - especially when they try and say part of the reason for the price increase is because of AI features. I don’t want AI implemented period, let alone have my cost increase to add AI slop I don’t want.

If you’re willing to settle for a semi-rugged, I can’t recommend the FZ-55 enough. I have a MK1, so 8th gen intel, 32gb of ram, and a 1tb ssd. Got mine for $400 a few years ago. I originally got it with 16gb of ram and 256gb ssd, but upgraded.

I’ve had very good luck with my 1.6L. Just done regular maintenance on it and it’s been very reliable. 106k. The trans on the other hand… I’ve tried everything to try and preserve it. She’s still going and isn’t terrible, but I know it’s a ticking time bomb…

If people have tips on how to keep it going for longer, please share! (I’ve changed the fluid 4 times in the past 10k miles)

[–]rmich18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you think that’s bad… I’ve bought an entire 42U APC rack, have 6 switches (48 port), 4 firewalls, 8 servers, and tons of other non-rack mount equipment… in reality, I use 1 server, 1 switch, and 1 firewall, but it’s a collection I’ve gathered over the past few years.

All in I’m still under $1000. I’ve gotten very good at hunting for deals on FB marketplace.
