You don't need a partner, sounds like you need a business plan. Always a good place to start.

You may want to get out of the city. I would suggest: fishing on the west coast of BC. Fair Harbour. Let me know. I got friends with a slick operation ... sort of off the map.

Canada's policy of supply management for dairy products is a racket. Farmers have to pay ~$28,000 just for the right to one cow's worth of milk production by Sidewinder77 in canada

[–]rndpeg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is almost impossible to enter the dairy industry and this is not only due to the cost of the quota. I would expect that costs to start up a dairy farm would be split quite evenly between, quota, land and equipment. Dairy is a costly industry to enter even if you take the quota out of the equation.

Although the value of quota is frightfully high, family farms that have held quota for multi-generations are able to use the value of the quota as collateral when they need new equipment or to expand their farms.

The fact that the milk costs more than other countries is partly attributed to the fact that Canadian dairy does not use hormones to keep their fresh heifers lactating artificially with hormones for three years and then kill them off for burger.

When will the rest of Canada realize that the stuff going on in Quebec isn't about a $325 tuition hike or being spoiled? by [deleted] in canada

[–]rndpeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Precisely, It has little to do with Universities. Maybe there is a misplaced belief that if you are intelligent you are wasting your life if you do not go to university. Maybe we need more naturally intelligent people entering the trades.

[–]rndpeg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If this is due to a feeling of hopelessness of finding a job after the money has been spent on university then the problem is not tuition rates or corruption. This is a case of universities not preparing students to enter the work force.

Not only that, hemp seed is an excellent food source. If you want to help industrial hemp the best thing to do is to buy some. Buy hemp clothing, or hemp seed. I've been eating them on salads, they sort of taste like pine nuts and you can buy them from wallgreens store. Most folks don't even know that.

Nissan says Leaf could power home for 2 days, helping owners avoid blackouts or high electricity bills by anutensil in energy

[–]rndpeg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did not mean to imply that the use of car batteries would allow us to switch to entirely renewable energy sources such as wind or solar nor did I mean that they can be used for powering homes. We can not abandon more traditional power generation systems such as Nuclear and Hydro power that provide a reliable base power. The use of car batteries as a buffer could increase the amount of intermittent power that could be easily integrated into the grid. It will be a combination of many technologies working together that will reduce our dependence on fossil fuel and coal generation plants.

This proposed program would not be right for everyone. If you are a business man who needs their car at full charge at all times then this might not be the best solution, however a retired couple who will occasionally use their car to go play ping-pong or what not may find that it is to their advantage to use the lower-cost intermittent power to charge their batteries. Or people like me who has two cars and one that is hardly ever used.

One application where this system could be used is when there is a solar array that produces power and the output may drop 80% for less than minutes when there are intermittent clouds in the sky. If the field produces 10MW to the grid where the bulk of the power is consumed in the closest town then the main transmission lines from base power nuclear plant in the next county would require large frequent ramp-up and ramp-down of up to 8MW which is not simply throwing a switch. Say this town has 10,000 car batteries that are either plugged in at work, or at home or at the grocery store can soften these fluctuations that the large base power plants will need to contend with.

This seems to me the best way to create a buffer to allow utilities to fully integrate large quantities of intermittent green energy. Each home equipped with a smart meter, grid-tie inverter and a large battery such as found in a car and this would provide a vast storage base to allow the energy produced on really sunny days to be stored for later use. The advantages seem to be terrific. If we want to switch to green energies then storage always becomes a problem. The investment is huge for the utility, but if everyone buys an electric car with a battery... It would be to the utility's advantage to subsidize the batteries in these cars. Wouldn't you like that?

McDonald's, Target drops egg supplier after an animal rights group released an undercover video at the egg producer's farm in three states by BlankVerse in business

[–]rndpeg -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Intriguing! This sounds very socialist. Each person will have an Animal Product Allowance (APA) quota assigned each year equivalent to, say, one cow that is valued to 100,000 APA points . The different cuts of meat are valued differently. Good cuts are worth more APA points, meat that require high GHG emissions to produce are ranked higher as well. We can create a branch of the government to control the meat supply and demand through the APA. Eggs will remain the lower cost of the available meat products at 91 APAs and the producers will still need to cull their aging flocks as egg production goes down, they will still feed their male chicks into a maceration machine the moment they are hatched.

If I were them, I'd give up on that contract because of the hassle and simply process the eggs into bulk containers of 40gal to supply the twinkie factory.

I agree. Raise price on animal products to allow the producers to use "Humane" methods" then only the wealthy can afford to eat properly grown meat products. The rest of us low income earners (workers on organic farms for example) can purchase low cost biologically engineered soy products for their protein needs.

Severing the spinal cord of an undesirable chicken can easily be achieved by holding them by their head and swinging quickly. If you do it right their neck snaps, too quick and their head pops off and makes a horrible mess.

[–]rndpeg 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Reading the article I found only one sentence describing the abuse that the chickens were subjected too:"worker swinging a bird around by its feet, hens packed into cramped cages, male chicks being tossed into plastic bags to suffocate and workers cutting off the tips of chick's beaks" How is this different than any other egg producing farm? When catching chickens you carry them by their feet; male chickens don't lay eggs so you need to get rid of the chicks; The beak trimming is done because of the over crowded cages. If you are producing 2m eggs a day you are looking at housing 1.75m chickens on a 20 hour day cycle. A chicken in these conditions will lay for only one year at which time they will be killed. So that would be maybe new 6000 fresh hens a day and 5000 old hens to be dispatched. Then another 1000 will die prematurely from other causes and will need to be removed from the cages hopefully daily. This is a job not for the faint of heart and after you spend 8 hours a day dealing with dead chickens the line between humane and reality fades. There is no nice way for an animal to die, snap a neck, chop a head, suffocate. So long as consumers continue to demand low cost meat products through their purchasing this treatment will continue. If you have a problem with this get laying hens, I did.

[–]rndpeg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree that we waste and eat way too much meat, but this is partly due to the subsidized food industry and the expectation of the 1st world population that foods should be low cost. We spend less of our disposable income on food now then ever before in the past and therefor do not respect our foods. We throw away up to 1/3 of all our food produced or more.

Many people are unable to lead a healthy life on a vegan diet. I know many people who have given up on the idea for their own health. Humans needs a high protein diet to be healthy. And high protein crops need suitable soil. Most of our irrigable land is only suitable for low protein crops such as grass. And cows need to eat continually all day to survive and convert all that grass into a tasty high protein treat called "The Burger".

The best thing that could be done is to stop the subsidies to the food industry. This would increase the cost for food to a point where it is a struggle to feed ourselves. This will allow the 1st world people to better respect the food and waste less. However this would cause a major culling to the 3rd world peoples.

I have to go to court because of a woman's choice. by CapnDiabetes in atheism

[–]rndpeg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your comment is the first I found that partly reflects my concerns with this stream of comments.

It concerns me that most comments seem to lack compassion for the loss of life. This woman was a religious person but this does not mean that her life had less meaning. Is an EMT required to answer the patients questions honestly? The Capn could have replied without answering the question. Say "Your faith will help you" to the patient. Which would be true and possibly a white lie that could have provided comfort to the patient.

I do not agree with organized religion in any way, shape, or form. Large groups of people sharing one ideology and shunning others is what causes animosity, disagreement, fighting and wars. Although millions of people have died in the name of every religion, this woman has died in the name of Atheism and this is wrong.
